As a key planar cell polarity protein, Van Gogh-like 2 (Vangl2) is essential for mammalian spermatogenesis. As a decapod crustacean, Eriocheir sinensis exhibits distinct spermatogenic processes due to its unique seminiferous tubule morphology and hemolymph-testis barrier (HTB). To determine whether Vangl2 performs analogous functions in E.

  • Ginsenosides (GS), a part of ginseng, have special qualities that can help reduce tiredness and inflammation, but how they help with injuries from high altitudes is not fully known.
  • In a study, scientists used rats in a high-altitude chamber to see how GS could protect against problems caused by low oxygen levels.
  • They found that GS improved the rats' health by reducing inflammation and stress in their lungs and kidneys, and helping their blood flow better, which is really important at high altitudes.

The hemolymph-testis barrier (HTB) is a reproduction barrier in Crustacea, guaranteeing the safe and smooth process of spermatogenesis, which is similar to the blood-testis barrier (BTB) in mammals. The MAPK signaling pathway plays an essential role in spermatogenesis and maintenance of the BTB. However, only a few studies have focused on the influence of MAPK on crustacean reproduction.

Aging is a complex, degenerative process associated with various metabolic abnormalities. Ginsenosides (GS) is the main active components of Panax ginseng, which has anti-aging effects and improves metabolism. However, the anti-aging effect and the mechanism of GS in middle-aged mice has not been elucidated.

Article Synopsis
  • Scientists are looking into natural ingredients to help with obesity, and they found that ginseng polysaccharides (PGP) might help reduce weight and body fat.
  • In a study, giving PGP to mice on a high-fat diet for 8 weeks stopped them from gaining too much weight and reduced fat levels in their bodies.
  • PGP also changed the types of bacteria in the mice's intestines and helped control certain genes in their liver that are important for getting rid of fat and cholesterol.

Various antidepressants have introduced in clinical practice for pain management, but it is important to understand how to properly use them. We therefore performed a systematic review and network meta-analysis to compare and rank the efficacy and safety of antidepressants for patients with chronic back pain. We identified eligible randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that investigated the efficacy and safety of antidepressants for chronic back pain from PubMed, Embase, the Cochrane Library, and ClinicalTrials.

The myosin motor protein myosin VI plays an essential role in mammalian spermatogenesis, however, the effects of myosin VI on male reproduction in Crustacea remain obscure. We identified the macromolecule es-Myosin VI in Eriocheir sinensis, and studied it by multiple methods. It co-localized with F-actin and was highly expressed in the testis.

Article Synopsis
  • mTOR is an important protein in cells that helps control many processes, including the production of sperm in mammals, but we don’t know much about how it works in crustaceans like the Chinese mitten crab.
  • In the study, scientists looked at two proteins, rpS6 and PKC, from crab testes, which seem to be important for sperm production.
  • When they tried to block these proteins, it caused problems in sperm production and messed up the protective barrier in the testes, likely because of changes in a structure called actin that helps cells stay organized.

Article Synopsis
  • Scientists found that tiny particles called TiO nanoparticles can harm male crustaceans, especially a type called Eriocheir sinensis.
  • The smaller 3 nm particles were more damaging than the 25 nm ones, affecting structures that help with sperm production.
  • The study showed that these particles can mess with important cell functions and create harmful substances in the crustaceans, but using certain chemicals can help fix some of the damage.

Background: Ginsenoside compound K (CK), the main active metabolite in , has shown good safety and bioavailability in clinical trials and exerts neuroprotective effects in cerebral ischemic stroke. However, its potential role in the prevention of cerebral ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury remains unclear. Our study aimed to investigate the molecular mechanism of ginsenoside CK against cerebral I/R injury.

β-CATENIN is an evolutionarily conserved multifunctional molecule that maintains cell adhesion as a cell junction protein to safeguard the integrity of the mammalian blood-testes barrier, and also regulates cell proliferation and apoptosis as a key signaling molecule in the WNT/β-CATENIN signaling pathway. In the crustacean Eriocheir sinensis, Es-β-CATENIN has been shown to be involved in spermatogenesis, but the testes of E. sinensis have large and well-defined structural differences from those of mammals, and the impact of Es-β-CATENIN in them is still unknown.

Background: Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) metabolism is involved in the entire physiopathological process and is critical to human health. Long-term imbalance in NAD homeostasis is associated with various diseases, including non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular diseases, neurodegenerative disorders, aging, and cancer, making it a potential target for effective therapeutic strategies. Currently, several natural products that target NAD metabolism have been widely reported to have significant therapeutic effects, but systematic summaries are lacking.

Spermatogenesis is a complicated process that includes spermatogonia differentiation, spermatocytes meiosis, spermatids spermiogenesis and final release of spermatozoa. Actin-related protein 3 (Arp3) and epidermal growth factor receptor pathway substrate 8 (Eps8) are two actin binding proteins that regulate cell adhesion in seminiferous tubules during mammalian spermatogenesis. However, the functions of these two proteins during spermatogenesis in nonmammalian species, especially Crustacea, are still unknown.

Background: Respiratory diseases mainly include asthma, influenza, pneumonia, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, pulmonary hypertension, lung fibrosis, and lung cancer. Given their high prevalence and poor prognosis, the prevention and treatment of respiratory diseases are increasingly essential. In particular, the development for the novel strategies of drug treatment has been a hot topic in the research field.

Spermatogenesis is a finely regulated process of germ cell proliferation and differentiation that leads to the production of sperm in seminiferous tubules. Although the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) signaling pathway is crucial for spermatogenesis in mammals, its functions and molecular mechanisms in spermatogenesis remain largely unknown in nonmammalian species, particularly in Crustacea. In this study, we first identified es-Raptor (the core component of mTOR complex 1) and es-Rictor (the core component of mTOR complex 2) from the testis of Eriocheir sinensis.

Panax ginseng, as the king of Chinese herb, has significant therapeutic effects on obesity, type 2 diabetes mellitus, fatty liver disease, colitis, diarrhea, and many other diseases. This review systematically summarized recent findings, which show that ginseng plays its role by regulating gut microbiota diversity, and gut microbiota could also regulate the transformation of ginsenosides. We conclude the characteristics of ginseng in regulating gut microbiota, as the potential targets to prevent and treat metabolic diseases, colitis, neurological diseases, cancer, and other diseases.

Pulmonary fibrosis (PF) is the end stage of various chronic and progressive interstitial lung diseases. TGF-β, a profibrotic cytokine, can promote epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), extracellular matrix (ECM) accumulation, and fibroblast proliferation, which contribute to progressive lung remodeling in PF. The Wenfei Buqi Tongluo (WBT) formula has been certified to be effective in the prevention and treatment of PF in clinical practice and has inhibitory effects on EMT, inflammation, and profibrotic factors.
