Mammalian spermatogenesis is a complex biological process that is regulated by multiple types of cells. The heterogeneity of these cells poses a challenge for analyzing different cell types at different developmental stages. To characterize the transcriptomic landscape of porcine spermatogenesis and identify potential marker genes for spermatogonia, an unbiased transcriptomic study of spermatogenesis in neonatal and sexually mature six-month-old Meihua pigs was performed using 10× Genomics single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq).

Purpose: This study aims to explore the impact of wearing peripheral defocus spectacle lenses (PDSL) on cylindrical refractive error (CYL) in myopic children.

Methods: This study included 1057 myopic children and divided the participants into three groups: the HAL group (spectacle lens with highly aspherical lenslets), the MPV group (spectacle lens based on manipulating peripheral vision), and a control group (without myopia control interventions). The study analyzed the effect of wearing PDSL on changes in spherical equivalent refraction, CYL, and corneal astigmatism (CA).

Optimization of metal-ligand asymmetric catalysts is usually done by empirical trials, where the ligand is arbitrarily modified, and the new catalyst is re-evaluated in the lab. This procedure is not efficient and alternative strategies are highly desirable. We propose the Homogeneous Catalyst Graph Neural Network (HCat-GNet), a machine learning model capable of aiding ligand optimization.

Article Synopsis
  • Researchers developed machine learning models to predict near-term all-cause and cardiovascular death in patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis (PD).
  • These models were based on data from 7539 PD patients, using demographic, clinical, and laboratory markers and evaluated using established performance metrics like AUROC and precision-recall curves.
  • The CVDformer models showed strong predictive accuracy, with AUROC values of 0.8767 and 0.9026 for all-cause and cardiovascular death, respectively, indicating high sensitivity and positive predictive values, though further calibration is needed.

This article develops a novel robust control methodology for nonlinear multiagent systems (MASs) to address the time-varying formation (TVF) problem. The methodology offers a concise yet efficacious technique based on the Lyapunov functional for more general one-sided Lipschitz (OSL) nonlinear MASs with external disturbances and time-varying delays. Note that most existing TVF controllers can only achieve formation targets under small delays, which significantly limits their performance.

Oral probiotic biotherapies hold significant promise for addressing intestinal inflammatory disorders. Nonetheless, due to the challenging pathological microenvironment of the gastrointestinal tract, it is difficult to achieve deliver probiotics in an inflammation-targeted manner while improving their intestinal colonization and minimizing the impact of gastrointestinal environment on their vitality. To address this, an innovative probiotics oral delivery system (EcN-Apt@HG) against ulcerative colitis (UC) was developed by conjugating IL-6 aptamer to the surface of EcN and subsequently encapsulating the probiotics in a hydrogel consisting of aldehyde-functionalized chondroitin sulfate (CS) and Poly(amidoamine) (PAMAM).

Current artificial systems suffer from catastrophic forgetting during continual learning, a limitation absent in biological systems. Biological mechanisms leverage the dual representation of specific and generalized memories within corticohippocampal circuits to facilitate lifelong learning. Inspired by this, we develop a corticohippocampal circuits-based hybrid neural network (CH-HNN) that emulates these dual representations, significantly mitigating catastrophic forgetting in both task-incremental and class-incremental learning scenarios.

The rapid growth, invasiveness, and resistance to treatment of glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) underscore the urgent need for improved diagnostics and therapies. Current surgical practice is limited by challenges with intraoperative imaging, while recurrence monitoring requires expensive magnetic resonance or nuclear imaging scans. Here we introduce 'acoustic tumor paint', an approach to labeling brain tumors for ultrasound imaging, a widely accessible imaging modality.

Ulcerative colitis (UC) treatment is often limited by adverse reactions and high recurrence rates, highlighting the need for safer, more effective therapies. Citrus medica 'Fingered' (C. medica), known for its anti-inflammatory properties, remains underexplored, particularly its polysaccharide components.

Background: CT-routine MRI fusion imaging has recently become available to evaluate spinal anatomy before surgery. Due to the 3-5 mm slice thickness and non-isotropic of routine MRI sequence, the CT-routine MRI fusion imaging is not good. The MRI multiple recalled gradient echo (MERGE) sequence is potentially useful in diagnosis of lumbar degeneration disease due to the better nerve roots visualization, 1 mm slice thickness and its isotropy.

Objective: The presence of skin flora (SF) has been identified as a significant factor in the onset and progression of cutaneous melanoma (CM). However, the vast diversity and abundance of SF present challenges to fully understanding the causal relationship between SF and CM.

Methods: A Two Sample Mendelian Randomization (TSMR) analysis was conducted to investigating the causal relationship between SF and CM.

Anxiety disorders, prevalent mental health conditions, receive significant attention globally due to their intricate etiology and the suboptimal effectiveness of existing therapies. Research is increasingly recognizing that the genesis of anxiety involves not only neurochemical brain alterations but also changes in gut microbiota. The microbiota-gut-brain axis (MGBA), serving as a bidirectional communication pathway between the gut microbiota and the central nervous system (CNS), is at the forefront of novel approaches to deciphering the complex pathophysiology of anxiety disorders.

WS is an attractive anode in alkali metal ion batteries (AMIBs) due to its 2D-layered structure and high theoretical capacity. However, the shuttle effect of sulfur and the spontaneous growth of W nanoparticles are key issues that limit the alkali-ion accommodation ability. Now, it is still a great challenge to achieve in situ control of the microstructure evolution paths in enclosed batteries for extending the cycling reversibility/lifespan.

Melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer characterized by high therapy resistance, has undergone extensive investigation through the utilization of BRAF-driven melanoma animal models. However, there exists a paucity of animal models for the rare hereditary melanoma resulting from germline mutations. Here, employing CRISPR/Cas9 technology, we generated on a knockout background to model human germline mutation-induced hereditary melanoma.

Polysaccharides are recognized as the predominant active constituents of Polygonatum cyrtonema Hua, conferring a broad spectrum of benefits. However, the structure-activity relationship of Polygonatum cyrtonema polysaccharides (PCP) and oligosaccharides (PCOP) remains underexplored. In this study, we aimed to compare the chemical properties and biological activities of PCP and PCOP.

This paper investigates the consensus control issue for nonlinear multiagent systems (MASs) subject to irregular state constraints and actuator faults using an adaptive dynamic programming (ADP) algorithm. Unlike the regular state constraints considered in previous studies, this paper addresses irregular state constraints that may exhibit asymmetry, time variation, and can emerge or disappear during operation. By developing a system transformation method based on one-to-one state mapping, equivalent unconstrained MASs can be obtained.
