Propofol (Pro), a prevalent intravenous anesthetic, has recently been recognized for its potential in mitigating ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injuries. Despite a plethora of evidence suggesting the beneficial effects of low-dose Pro in renal I/R injury (RI/R), its role in modulating pyroptosis in renal tubular epithelial cells consequent to RI/R has not been thoroughly elucidated. View Article and Find Full Text PDFPurpose: Deficits in voluntary activation of the core stabilizing muscles are consistently observed in patients with chronic low back pain (CLBP); however, the underlying neural mechanism remains unclear. This cross-sectional study aimed at testing the hypothesis that the impaired voluntary activation of core stabilizing muscles is associated with structural and functional alterations in the basal ganglia, thalamus, and cortex in patients with CLBP.
Methods: We obtained structural and resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) data from 53 patients with CLBP and 67 healthy controls and estimated the alterations in grey matter volume (GMV) and functional and effective connectivity (EC) of regions with altered GMV via whole brain analysis.
Purpose: This study explored perceptions of meaningful weight-loss and the level of change on two patient-reported outcome (PRO) measures, the 36-item Short Form Health Survey® [SF-36v2®] and Impact of Weight on Quality of Life Lite-Clinical Trials [IWQOL-Lite-CT], that individuals living with overweight or obesity consider to be meaningful and indicative of treatment success.
Methods: Thirty-three qualitative interviews were conducted in the US with adults living with overweight or obesity. Concept elicitation explored perceptions of minimally important/meaningful weight-loss using open-ended questions.
With a nonadiabatic dynamical method the polaron dynamics in organic ferromagnets with spin radicals is investigated under weak electric fields. The results reveal two novel phenomena different from those in normal polymers due to the existence of spin radicals. One is that the velocity of the polaron is asymmetric upon the reversal of the applied electric field, which is explained from the asymmetric polarity of the polaron charge density in different directions of the field, and hence its effect on the lattice distortion.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFIn light of rising expenditures for physicians' services and the scheduled decreases in the amounts Medicare pays for such services, we identified the sources of change in the volume and intensity of Medicare physicians' services. We found that the per capita volume and intensity of physicians services used by Medicare beneficiaries increased more than 30% between 1993 and 1998. Our analyses indicated that, at most, half of this increase was due to measurable changes in the demographic composition, places of residence, prevalence of health conditions, and managed care enrollment of beneficiaries.
