While endoscopic nasobiliary drainage(ENBD) effectively reduces post-ERCP cholangitis (PEC) incidence, its impact on PEC in MBO patients is unclear. Cholecystolithiasis combined with bile duct stones is more and more common in children, but the surgical treatment is still controversial. We report on a 3-year-old boy, who underwent laparoscope combined with ureteroscope for choledocholithiasis with cholecystolithiasis. This combination therapy offers the possibility to treat pediatric patients with cholecystolithiasis and bile duct stones in low-resource settings where ERCP experience and child-specific surgical instruments are not available.

This study examined the relationships between the role of the instructor and university students' learning outcomes in cloud-based classrooms during the COVID-19 (coronavirus disease 2019) pandemic. The results of an online survey of 7,210 university students in mainland China revealed that the students' perceived learning outcomes and learning satisfaction were positively related to instructor innovation and negatively related to instructor performance. Instructional support was positively related to the students' perceived learning outcomes but not directly related to their learning satisfaction.

As the number of various sensors grows fast in real applications such as smart city and intelligent agriculture, context-aware systems would acquire raw context information from dynamic, asynchronous and heterogeneous context providers, but multi-source information usually leads to the situation uncertainty of the system entities involved, which is harmful to appropriate services, and specially the inconsistency is a kind of main uncertainty problems and should be processed properly. A new inconsistent context fusion algorithm based on back propagation (BP) neural network and modified Dempster-Shafer theory (DST) combination rule is proposed in this paper to eliminate the inconsistency to the greatest extent and obtain accurate recognition results. Through the BP neural network, the situations of entities can be recognized effectively, and based on the modified combination rule, the recognition results can be fused legitimately and meaningfully.

It has been implicated that reactive oxygen species (ROS) play important roles in modulating tumor progression. However, the mechanisms by which redox-regulated tumor progression are largely unknown. We previously demonstrated that reduced intracellular redox conditions could be achieved in stably transfected small cell lung cancer cells with gamma-glutamylcysteine synthetase (gamma-GCSh) cDNA which encodes a rate-limiting enzyme in the biosynthesis of glutathione (GSH), a major physiological redox regulator.

The c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK)/stress activated protein kinase is preferentially activated by stress stimuli. Growth factors, particularly ligands for G protein-coupled receptors, usually induce only modest JNK activation, although they may trigger marked activation of the related extracellular signal-regulated kinase. In the present study, we demonstrated that homozygous disruption of glycogen synthase kinase 3beta (GSK-3beta) dramatically sensitized mouse embryonic fibroblasts (MEFs) to JNK activation induced by lysophosphatidic acid (LPA) and sphingosine-1-phosphate, two prototype ligands for G protein-coupled receptors.

Retinoblastoma as a genetic disease is a paradigm for tumor-suppressor gene theory. The RB gene is one of the best-studied tumor-suppressor genes with known key functions in controlling cell proliferation and differentiation. Reconstitution of RB function in RB-deficient tumor cells induces irreversible growth arrest (senescence) and inhibits telomerase activity, simultaneously correcting two of the four defined carcinogenic events in human cells.

Programmed cell death and survival are controlled by complex pathways, with the anti-apoptotic proteins Bcl-2 and Bcl-X(L) and the pro-apoptotic proteins Bax and Bcl-X(S) being major regulators. Variations in the expression of Bcl-X(S) have been observed in leukemic cells from acute myeloid leukemia (AML) patients and correlated with clinical outcome, but the impact of Bcl-X(S) on molecular pathophysiological mechanisms and the potential role of Bcl-X(S) as a therapeutic target in AML are not yet defined. In order to analyze the functional relevance of Bcl-X(S) in AML, Bcl-X(S) was moderately (2-3 fold) overexpressed in the AML cell lines HL-60 and MO7e by transfection with a tetracycline-regulatable Bcl-X(S) expression system.

A potential role for lysophosphatidic acid (LPA) in human oncogenesis was first suggested by the observation that LPA is present at elevated levels in ascites of ovarian cancer patients. In the current study, we demonstrated that LPA is a potent inducer of interleukin-6 (IL-6) and interleukin-8 (IL-8) production in ovarian cancer cells. Both IL-6 and IL-8 have been implicated in ovarian cancer progression.
