Anticipated shortages in donated blood supply have prompted investigation of alternative approaches for in vitro production of red blood cells (RBCs), such as expansion of conditional immortalization erythroid progenitors. However, there is a bioprocessing challenge wherein factors promoting maximal cell expansion and growth-limiting inhibitory factors are yet to be investigated. The authors use an erythroblast cell line (ImEry) derived from immortalizing CD71+CD235a+ erythroblast from adult peripheral blood for optimization of expansion culture conditions.

Article Synopsis
  • A new multifunctional platform for detecting small biomolecules and tumor markers uses fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) between upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs).
  • Reductive molecules like HO can enhance the growth of AuNPs, which then quench UCNP fluorescence, allowing for the measurement of different substances based on their concentration.
  • This method not only detects HO-related molecules like l-lactate and glucose but is also adaptable for other reductants and enzyme activities, highlighting its versatility in analytical chemistry.

We show that spiral and helical Au nanowires can be directly grown via the active surface growth mechanism. The formation of spiral nanowires as opposed to straight nanowires is not triggered by the presence of a particular reactant, but controlled by the ratio of reactant concentrations. We propose that the asymmetric blocking of the Au-substrate interface induces imbalanced growth of the nanowire, causing it to curve.

Numerous studies have indicated that primary tumors induce the formation of a pre-metastatic niche in distant organs by secreting tumor-derived factors. The present study shows that pre-exposure to chronic stress enhanced lung colonization efficiency by circulating tumor cells, suggesting that chronic stress critically influences pre-metastatic lungs before the arrival of disseminated tumor cells. Ablation of the sympathetic nerve function by 6-OHDA or blockage of the β-adrenergic signaling by propranolol remarkably suppressed stress-induced lung metastasis.
