Objective: To validate a Doppler index of diastolic filling (E/Em) during exercise in the early stage of the patients with acute myocardial infarction, and investigate its association with exercise capacity.

Methods: The study enrolled consecutive 60 patients with first ST segment elevation myocardial infarction(STEMI)in Killip I-II stage and who underwent percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) from March 2008 to August 2008(as study group), At 10-14 days after acute myocardial infarction, Cardiopulmonary Exercising Testing (CPET, Modified Bruce flat treadmill protocol, symptom-limited flat exercise tolerance test) was conducted with Tissue Doppler Imaging (TDI) evaluation at rest and instantly during exercising peak. Doppler index of diastolic filling was also measured at rest and immediately after Cardiopulmonary Exercising Testing in 30 age-matched patients as control whose coronary angiography (CAG) or coronary computed tomography was negative.

Static dipole polarizabilities for the ground-state geometries of yttrium clusters (Yn, n < or = 15) are investigated by using the numerically finite field method in the framework of density functional theory. The structural size dependence of electronic properties, such as the highest occupied molecular orbital-lowest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO-LUMO) gap, ionization energy, electron affinity, chemical hardness and softness, etc., has been determined for yttrium clusters.

Aim: To explore the changes of mRNA and protein expressions of heart-type fatty acid binding protein (H-FABP) in rat ischemic myocardium at different intervals ischemia.

Methods: 60 SD male rats weighing 250-350 g, were randomly divided into one sham-operated group and five study groups (group A1, A2, A3, A4, A5, the left coronary artery of rats has been ligated for 1 h, 2 h, 4 h, 6 h, 12 h respectively). Myocardil samples from infarct zone, ischemic and non-ischemic zone, were obtained for histology examination, and the mRNA for H-FABP in ischemic myocardial tissue were determined by RT-PCR.

Congenital contractural arachnodactyly (Beals syndrome) is a rare autosomal dominantly inherited connective tissue disorder characterized by flexion contractures, arachnodactyly, crumpled ears, and mild muscular hypoplasia. Here, a father and son with congenital contractural arachnodactyly features were identified. After sequencing 15 exons (22 to 36) of the FBN2 gene, a novel mutation (C1425Y) was found in exon 33.

A set of fluorophenyl-substituted adt-bridged Fe2S2 active site models of Fe-only hydrogenase, [(micro-SCH2)2NR]Fe2(CO)6 (, R=C6F4CF3-p; , R=C6H4CF3-p) and [(micro-SCH2)2NR]Fe2(CO)5(PPh3) (, R=C6F4CF3-p; , R=C6H4CF3-p), have been synthesized and well characterized. Spectroscopic and electrochemical studies demonstrate that the aryl-substituted complexes are stable toward a strong acid HBF4/Et2O, and electrocatalytic process for the hydrogen production is mostly dependent on the strength of the available proton source. When CH3COOH is used as the proton source, the electrocatalytic process begins with successively two one-electron reduction processes to produce H2 at Fe(0)Fe(0) (E2pc); whereas in the presence of strong acid, HBF4/Et2O, the process is initiated by protonation of a N-bridged atom followed by reduction of the protonated N-bridged atom around -1.

3-Phenylamino-4-phenyl-1,2,4-triazole-5-thione was synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, IR and X-ray single crystal diffraction. Density functional theory calculations of the structure, natural bond orbitals, atomic charge distributions and thermodynamic functions of the title compound were performed at B3LYP/ 6-311G** and PBE1PBE/6-311G**levels of theory, respectively. NPA atomic charge distributions indicate that the title compound can be used as a potential multi-dentate ligand to coordinate with various metallic ions.

We report the first large genome-wide association study (GWAS) in a Chinese population to identify susceptibility variants for psoriasis using a two-stage case-control design. In the first stage, we carried out a genome-wide association analysis in 1,139 cases and 1,132 controls of Chinese Han ancestry using Illumina Human 610-Quad BeadChips. In the second stage, we took top SNPs forward for replication in two independent samples of 5,182 cases and 6,516 controls of Chinese Han ancestry, and 539 cases and 824 controls of Chinese Uygur ancestry.

Background, Aim, And Scope: Dye pollutants are a major class of environmental contaminants. Over 100,000 dyes have been synthesized worldwide and more than 700,000 tons are produced annually and over 5% are discharged into aquatic environments. The adsorption or sorption is one of the most efficient methods to remove dye and heavy metal pollutants from wastewater.

A series of azadithiolate (adt)-bridged Fe-only hydrogenase model complexes, Fe2(CO)6(mu-adt)C6H4I-4 (1), Fe2(CO)6(mu-adt)C6H4C[triple bond]CR [R = C6H4NO2-4 (2), C6H4CHO-4 (3), C6H4NH2-4 (4), C6H4COOH-4 (5), C6H4COOCH2CH3-4 (6), C6H4F-4 (7), C6H5 (8), C6H4OCH3-4 (9), C6H4N(CH3)2-4 (10)], [Fe2(CO)5(PPh3)(mu-adt)C6H4I-4 (11), and Fe2(CO)5(PPh3)(mu-adt)C6H4C[triple bond]CC6H4NO2-4 (12), have been synthesized in high yields under mild conditions. The linear geometry and rigidity of a triple bond act as an effective bridge to anchor a functionality ranging from electron-donating to electron-accepting, even coordinative groups in the adt model complexes. X-ray crystal analysis of 2, 3, and 6-12 reveals that the model complexes retain the butterfly structure of Fe2S2 model analogues.

Background: Previous brain imaging studies suggested that the brain activity underlying the perception of chronic pain may differ from that underlying acute pain. To investigate the brain regions involved in chronic spontaneous pain due to brachial plexus avulsion (BPA), fluorine-(18)fluorodeoxyglucose ((18)F-FDG) positron emission tomography (PET) scanning was applied to determine the glucose metabolic changes in patients with pain due to BPA.

Methods: Six right-handed patients with chronic spontaneous pain due to left-BPA and twelve right-handed age- and sex-matched healthy control subjects participated in the (18)F-FDG PET study.

To investigate the application of human finger nails in the diagnosis of cancer, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy was employed to study the finger nails from some normal people and some with esophagus cancer and others with an operation for curing esophagus cancer five months ago. The results showed that there are obvious differences between FTIR spectra in them in spectral parameters such as frequency, intensity and band shape etc. The changes in the phosphate symmetric stretching vibration v(s) (PO2-) and asymmetric stretching vibration v(a)s(PO2-) modes are uniform, the v(s) (PO2-) and v(a)s(PO2-) absorption peaks of cancerous ones shift to high wave number compared with those of normal people, while those with operation shift to low wave number compared with those of cancerous ones.

Article Synopsis
  • Researchers are exploring how the central nervous system can regenerate cells to treat neurological diseases caused by cell death.
  • In amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) mice, there is strong evidence of a regenerative response in the spinal cord, primarily through increased gliogenesis (glial cell formation) but little evidence of new neuron formation (neurogenesis).
  • This suggests that while the adult spinal cord has some regenerative capacity, more research is needed to see if this process can be improved to potentially slow or reverse ALS progression.
