Article Synopsis
  • A study in Quzhou, China, explored the link between alcohol consumption and colorectal cancer (CRC) risk, finding that CRC incidence is rising globally.
  • The research revealed that current and former drinkers, especially women, showed an increased risk of CRC, with specific patterns in drinking frequency and duration affecting odds.
  • Results indicated that women had a stronger association with CRC due to drinking compared to men, and that men's risk for CRC related to whisky consumption displayed a J-shaped trend.

Background: Many patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) suffer from sialorrhea. Sialorrhea is often treated with anticholinergics and botulinum toxin, but some adverse effects have limited the use of these treatments. Dihydroergotoxine mesylate is an α-adrenergic blocking agents as well as some affinities to the dopaminergic and serotonin (5-HT) receptors.

Background: The associations of occupational activity (OA), commuting, leisure-time physical activity (LTPA), and sitting with overweight/obesity in working adults are controversial. This study explored these factors with the risk of overall and abdominal overweight/obesity in a Chinese working population and whether these associations differ by gender.

Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted.

To define the features of glycemic variations in drug naïve type 2 diabetic (T2D) patients with different HbA values using continuous glucose monitoring (CGM), a total of 195 drug naïve T2D patients were admitted. The subjects were divided into the following groups: lower HbA values (≤8%), moderate HbA values (>8% and ≤10%), and higher HbA values (>10%). The patients underwent oral glucose tolerance tests and were then subjected to 3-day CGM.

Toxocara canis is an common intestinal nematode of canids and the principal causative agent of human toxocariasis. Vitellogenin (Vg), a source of amino acids and lipids in the eggs, are considered to play an important role in embryo development of a wide range of organisms. In the present study, the transcriptional levels of Tc-vit-6 gene in male and female adult T.

We performed continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) to define the features of patients with newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes (T2D) before and after Continuous Subcutaneous Insulin Infusion (CSII) therapy. This was a retrospective analysis. Newly diagnosed T2D patients (106) were admitted from eight centers in China.

Introduction: The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of adding exenatide to continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion (CSII) therapy on the precise insulin doses required by type 2 diabetic patients to maintain glycemic control.

Methods: This was a single-center, randomized, controlled, open-label trial. Uncontrolled T2D patients were recruited between March 2010 and November 2011 at Nanjing First Hospital, China.

Toxocariasis is an important, neglected zoonosis caused mainly by Toxocara canis. Although our knowledge of helminth molecular biology is improving through completed draft genome projects, there is limited detailed information on the molecular biology of Toxocara species. Here, transcriptomic sequencing of male and female adult T.

Background: To investigate whether saxagliptin add-on therapy to continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion (CSII) further improve blood glycemic control than CSII therapy in patients with newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes (T2D).

Methods: This was a single-center, randomized, control, open-labeled trial. Newly diagnosed T2D patients were recruited between February 2014 and December 2015.

Article Synopsis
  • This study aimed to evaluate the effects of dapagliflozin treatment on glycemic variations and oxidative stress in patients newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).
  • Conducted as a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial with 28 patients over 24 weeks, significant improvements were observed in glycemic control and oxidative stress markers in those receiving dapagliflozin compared to the placebo group.
  • The results indicated that dapagliflozin treatment led to reduced mean amplitude glycemic excursion, lower mean plasma glucose levels, and decreased oxidative stress, suggesting potential cardiovascular benefits for T2DM patients.

This study investigated the cost-effectiveness between double and single Fecal Immunochemical Test(s) (FIT) in a mass CRC screening. A two-stage sequential screening was conducted. FIT was used as a primary screening test and recommended twice by an interval of one week at the first screening stage.

Toxocariasis is one of the most important, but neglected, zoonoses, which is mainly caused by Toxocara canis. To better understand the role of serine/threonine protein phosphatase 1 (PP1) in reproductive processes of male adult T. canis, differential expression analysis was used to reveal the profiles of PP1 catalytic subunit α (PP1cα) gene Tc-stp-1 and PP1 regulatory subunit 7 (PP1r7) gene TcM-1309.

Background: No case of solitary fibrous tumor of the pleura with Doege-Potter syndrome has been reported in China. This study was to report a rare repeatedly recurrent case of solitary fibrous tumor of the pleura with Doege-Potter syndrome diagnosed in China and a three-decade literature review of solitary fibrous tumor of the pleura with Doege-Potter syndrome worldwide.

Case Presentation: A rare case of solitary fibrous tumor of the pleura with Doege-Potter syndrome was diagnosed in 2005 with follow-up to 2011.

  • Diabetic patients have a significantly higher risk of developing common cancers such as pancreatic, breast, and colorectal cancer, and their cancer-related mortality is also moderately increased compared to non-diabetic individuals.* -
  • The potential connection between diabetes and cancer may be influenced by factors such as insulin's role in cell growth, hyperglycemia's effects on cancer cells, and chronic inflammation.* -
  • Early detection and appropriate treatment of cancer in diabetic patients are crucial for improving their outcomes, and diabetes medications may also impact cancer risk.*

The performance of combining fecal immunochemical tests (FITs) and a high-risk factor questionnaire (HRFQ) in colorectal cancer (CRC) screening in economically and medically underserved populations is uncertain. This study investigated the performance of a CRC screening protocol of combining FITs and an HRFQ as primary screening methods in a rural Chinese population. A CRC mass screening was conducted using FITs and an HRFQ as the first and colonoscopy as the second stage of screening in Jiashan, 2007-2009.

To explore breast cancer etiology, literature was searched using Medline. We explored the 1) plausibility of smoking in breast carcinogenesis; 2) physiological properties, susceptibility windows, and exposure timing of breast cells; 3) role of exogenous hormones in breast carcinogenesis; 4) biological mechanism of synergistic interactions between smoking and exogenous hormones in breast carcinogenesis; and 5) evidence from epidemiologic studies and the fitted secular trend between smoking rate, exogenous hormone use, and breast cancer incidence in past decades. We deduced that exogenous hormone use per se is not a significant cause and its association with breast cancer is distorted by chronic exposure to environmental carcinogens, especially smoking.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to identify factors that hinder colorectal cancer (CRC) screening in an urban Chinese community population.
  • The research involved a case-control design where participants were grouped based on their participation in CRC screening tests, highlighting differences in willingness to undergo screening related to occupation and gender.
  • Key barriers included poor awareness of CRC, fear of the screening process, time constraints, and costs, suggesting that improving public knowledge and making screening more accessible could enhance participation rates.
