Background: Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is common deformity with unknown cause. Previous studies have suggested the abnormal serum leptin and ghrelin level in AIS girls. The aim of present study was to evaluate whether the serum leptin and ghrelin level could serve as risk factor in predicting the curve progression in AIS girls.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates why primary chondrocytes from girls with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) have low metabolic activity and how this relates to leptin signaling, which is crucial for bone growth and chondrocyte function.
  • AIS patients showed similar serum leptin levels to controls but had reduced phosphorylation of JAK2 and STAT3, along with lower cartilage matrix synthesis and Ob-R expression on their cell membranes.
  • Researchers found that inhibiting lysosomes increased total Ob-R but did not impact its membrane expression, while knocking down clathrin heavy chain (CHC) improved membrane Ob-R levels and boosted the effects of leptin, suggesting the dysfunction stems from the balance of Ob-R endocytosis and new receptor synthesis

Article Synopsis
  • The study compares outcomes of two surgical techniques (anterior-posterior vs. posterior-only) for treating thoracolumbar tuberculosis in children aged 5 to 14 years from 2005 to 2009.
  • A retrospective review of 47 children reveals that the posterior approach resulted in shorter operative time, less blood loss, and fewer complications compared to the anterior-posterior method, while both approaches effectively treated the disease.
  • The findings suggest that the posterior approach may be preferable, especially for children with poorer health or early stages of bone destruction.

Purpose: We present a retrospective study of patients with multilevel contiguous tuberculous spondylitis of thoracic region that underwent single-stage posterolateral debridement and fusion and following posterior instrumentation.

Methods: From June 2000 to March 2009, 870 consecutive spinal tubercular patients including 36 patients who were diagnosed and treated as multilevel contiguous thoracic spinal tuberculosis in our institution. Apart from five patients being treated conservatively, the 31 cases received surgery by single-stage posterolateral debridement, fusion, following posterior instrumentation and postural drainage.
