First of all, we show that two kinds of sandwich bilayers (BLs) are dynamically, thermally, and mechanically stable, which are degenerate p-type materials with intercalated Ca atoms, , Nb-doped MoS homobilayers (HoBLs) and Nb-doped WS-MoS heterobilayers (HtBLs) with 25% Nb content. Specifically, their interlayer bindings are five times stronger than van der Waals interactions in their pristine counterparts. Both of them are semiconductors with indirect band gaps in the visible region within the HSE06 exchange-correlation functional.

Background: Loss of the transcription factor GLI-Similar 3 (GLIS3) function causes congenital hypothyroidism (CH) in both humans and mice due to decreased expression of several thyroid hormone (TH) biosynthetic genes in thyroid follicular cells. Whether and to what extent, GLIS3 regulates thyroid gene transcription in coordination with other thyroid transcriptional factors (TFs), such as PAX8, NKX2.1 and FOXE1, is poorly understood.

The polymorphism of nanostructures is of paramount importance for many promising applications in high-performance nanodevices. We report the chemical vapor deposition synthesis of GaS nanowires (NWs) that show the consecutive phase transitions of monoclinic (M) → hexagonal (H) → wurtzite (W) → zinc blende (C) when lowering the growth temperature from 850 to 600 °C. At the highest temperature, single-crystalline NWs were grown in the thermodynamically stable M phase.

The GLI-Similar 1-3 () genes, in addition to encoding GLIS1-3 Krüppel-like zinc finger transcription factors, also generate circular GLIS (circGLIS) RNAs. GLIS1-3 regulate gene transcription by binding to GLIS binding sites in target genes, whereas circGLIS RNAs largely act as miRNA sponges. GLIS1-3 play a critical role in the regulation of many biological processes and have been implicated in various pathologies.

This study investigates a highly flexible/stretchable and mechanically durable superhydrophobic/superoleophilic coating for efficient oil/water separation and oil absorption. The coating is applied via a simple immersion process using a mixed solution of a biocompatible adhesive (ethyl cyanoacrylate, ECA), a highly stretchable polymer (polycaprolactone, PCL), and superhydrophobic/superoleophilic nanoparticles (fluorine-coated silica nanoparticles, F-SiO NPs) in a solvent, followed by solvent evaporation and ECA polymerization. Polymerized ECA (poly-ECA) in the coating material strongly adheres the F-SiO NPs to the substrate surface, while PCL bestows the rigid poly-ECA with high flexibility.

Preserving optimal mitochondrial function is critical in the heart, which is the most ATP-avid organ in the body. Recently, we showed that global deficiency of the nuclear receptor RORα in the "staggerer" mouse exacerbates angiotensin II-induced cardiac hypertrophy and compromises cardiomyocyte mitochondrial function. However, the mechanisms underlying these observations have not been defined previously.

Article Synopsis
  • EMT and primary ciliogenesis together help basal mammary stem cells (MaSCs) gain stem cell properties to support mammary gland development, but the exact processes are still not fully clear.
  • EMT transcription factors are found to initiate ciliogenesis during specific EMT stages by activating key inducers like FGFR1, which then leads to the inactivation of the GLIS2 protein, a transcriptional repressor.
  • This inactivation of GLIS2 enhances MaSC stemness and is essential for normal mammary gland development, as well as boosting the growth and tumor formation in certain breast cancers, particularly claudin-low subtypes, distinguished by a GLIS2-dependent gene expression pattern.

Chronically elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) is the major risk factor of primary open-angle glaucoma, a leading cause of blindness. Dysfunction of the trabecular meshwork (TM), which controls the outflow of aqueous humor (AqH) from the anterior chamber, is the major cause of elevated IOP. Here, we demonstrate that mice deficient in the Krüppel-like zinc finger transcriptional factor GLI-similar-1 (GLIS1) develop chronically elevated IOP.

Sharks, marine creatures that swim fast and have an antifouling ability, possess dermal denticle structures of micrometer-size. Because the riblet geometries on the denticles reduce the shear stress by inducing the slip of fluid parallel to the stream-wise direction, shark skin has the distinguished features of low drag and antifouling. Although much attention has been given to low-drag surfaces inspired from shark skin, it remains an important challenge to accurately mimic denticle structures in the micrometer scale and to finely control their structural features.
