Purpose: Swelling after total knee replacement surgery can hinder recovery, cryotherapy is one of the non-pharmacological interventions. However, the evidence of effectiveness is limited, possibly due to the heterogeneity of parameters. This scoping review aims to summarise existing evidence, clarify the mechanism and effect of cryotherapy on swelling after total knee arthroplasty, and analyze various parameters, providing evidence for clinical practice and future research.

Purpose: Swelling in the lower limbs after total knee arthroplasty (TKA) affects surgical outcomes. Prolonged swelling requires monitoring and remote management during home-based rehabilitation. Causes of swelling vary but, so far, no indicators are available to monitor and identify causes of lower limb swelling, making it difficult to implement targeted interventions.

Article Synopsis
  • * Through interviews with 13 clinical researchers, five key themes were identified: selecting patients, reducing patient burden, encouraging patient expression, benefits of engagement, and the need for researcher preparation.
  • * The findings reveal that cultural traits like 'reservedness' impede patient engagement, necessitating culturally tailored strategies to enhance participation and ensure alignment with patient values and needs.

Objective: Due to the escalating global prevalence of allergic rhinitis (AR) and its status as an independent risk factor for asthma, timely and effective control of AR is crucial. Achieving this often involves the accurate assessment of AR. Currently, the Control of Allergic Rhinitis and Asthma Test (CARAT) is widely used as an assessment tool, but its measurement effectiveness in Chinese AR patients remains unclear.

Article Synopsis
  • * Using the Delphi method, 11 experts evaluated and agreed on a set of indicators for classifying swelling causes, resulting in 4 primary, 19 secondary, and 19 tertiary indicators.
  • * Reliable and scientifically backed indicators were identified, with recommendations for blood tests and ultrasound scans to effectively diagnose various causes of swelling, aiding in better management post-surgery.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to understand the expectations of Chinese patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty (TKA) and how cultural differences influence their outlook on surgery outcomes.
  • - A total of 198 patients completed a questionnaire and 15 were interviewed, revealing that they had high expectations (average score 89.17), particularly for pain relief and regaining mobility, while lower expectations were noted for employment and sexual activity.
  • - Findings showed significant cultural influences on TKA expectations, highlighting the need for culturally adjusted assessment tools and better strategies for managing patient expectations post-surgery.

The rapid industrialization has had a serious impact on the environment, leading to an increase in disease and healthcare problems. The development of simple and effective biosensors to achieve specific analyte detection and bioimaging can provide useful information for disease prevention and treatment. Sulfur quantum dots (SQDs), a new class of metal-free fluorescent nanomaterial, are being studied and applied in diagnostic fields such as bioimaging and biosensing due to their advantages of simple synthetic process, unique composition, ultrasmall size, adjustable fluorescence, and low toxicity.

Bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) are multipotential differentiation cells which can differentiate into different cell types such as osteoblasts, chondrocytes, adipocytes, cardiomyocytes, hepatocytes, endothelial cells, and neuronal cells. Such multipotential differentiation makes them attractive for stem cell-based therapy aimed at treating previously incurable disorders. In the present work, we encapsulated BMSCs into a hydrogel with a three-dimensional (3D) network of nanofibers, formed from self-assembling of peptide amphiphile.

Ischemia/reperfusion is a common cause of acute kidney injury (AKI). However, mechanisms underlying the sudden loss in kidney function and tissue injury remain to be fully elucidated. Here, we investigated the role of peptidyl arginine deiminase-4 (PAD4), which converts arginine to citrulline and plays a role in epigenetic regulation and inflammation, in renal ischemia/reperfusion injury.

Krüppel-like factor 7 (KLF7) is a member of the KLF family of zinc finger transcription factors, and was the first KLF cloned using complementary DNA and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) techniques with human vascular endothelial cells as a template. In addition, KLF7 is known as the ubiquitous Krüppel-like factor, as it is widely expressed in numerous human tissues at low levels. In the present study, the function of KLF7 in migration and epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), which are associated with tumor progression, was investigated in human oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) cells.
