Article Synopsis
  • Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a serious blood cancer marked by the rapid growth of immature myeloid cells, and quercetin, a flavonoid, shows potential as a treatment but needs more research on its effects in AML.
  • This study finds that quercetin triggers cell death in AML cells through apoptosis, which is dependent on caspases, and also causes a decrease in mitochondrial membrane potential and Bcl-2 proteins.
  • The researchers identified that quercetin's effects involve downregulating VEGFR2 and the PI3K/Akt signaling pathways, which play a crucial role in the apoptosis process, demonstrating that these pathways are key upstream regulators in quercetin-induced cell death in AML

Caveolin-3 (CAV3) is a muscle specific protein that plays an important role in maintaining muscle health and glucose homeostasis in vivo. A novel autosomal dominant form of LGMD-1C in humans is due to a P104L mutation within the coding sequence of the human CAV3 gene. The mechanism by which the LGMD-1C mutation leads to muscle weakness remains unknown.
