[Effect of morphine on expression of gene of enzymes related to purine nucleotide metabolism in c6 glioma].

Objective: To investigate the effect of morphine on catabolism and anabolism of purine nucleotide in c6 glioma cells.

Methods: C6 glioma cells were cultured and divided into 3 groups: 1) morphine group: morphine (10 micro g/ml culture) was added for 6 h, 12 h, 24 h, 48 h, and 72 h; 2) morphine + naloxone group: naloxone (1 micro mol/L) was added for 1 hour and then morphine (10 micro g/ml) was added for 24 hours; and 3) control group: normal saline was used for 6, 12, 24, 48, and 72 hours. The C6 glioma cells were centrifuged.

Flow cytometric assessment of ethylene glycol monoethyl ether on spermatogenesis in rats.

The effects of ethylene glycol monoethyl ether (EGEE) on testicular cell populations in rats were investigated by a flow cytometric method. Rats were administered by gavage with EGEE at the various doses of 0 (saline alone), 100, 200, 400, and 800 mg/kg body weight/day for 4 weeks. The treatment of EGEE caused decreases in the weight of testis and epididymis and in the number of testicular cells.

ATP modulation of sodium currents in rat dorsal root ganglion neurons.

The modulation of tetrodotoxin-sensitive (TTX-S) and slow tetrodotoxin-resistant (TTX-R) sodium currents in rat dorsal root ganglion neurons by ATP was studied using the whole-cell patch-clamp method. The effects of ATP on two types of sodium currents were either stimulatory or inhibitory depending on the kinetic parameters tested. At a holding potential of -80 mV ATP suppressed TTX-S sodium currents when the depolarizing potential was positive to -30 mV but it increased them when the depolarizing potential was negative to -30 mV.

Oxidized Raffinose Intramolecular Cross-linking of Porcine Hemoglobin Effects on Its Structure and Function.

Periodate-oxidized raffinose is utilized to modify porcine oxyhemoglobin and deoxyhemoglobin, respectively. These modified protein derivatives showed special characteristics that it can resist the dissociation of alpha(2)beta(2) tetramer in comparison with natural proteins. According to the analysis in SDS-PAGE and reverse phase HPLC, the two porcine hemoglobin derivatives are all intramolecular linked proteins and the cross-linking sites lie between the two beta subunits.

Oxygen-binding Properties of Complexes between Dextran and Pyridoxal 5-Phosphate-Modified Porcine Hemoglobin.

It was demonstrated by oxygen equilibrium curve that the pyridoxal 5-phosphate(PLP) modified porcine deoxyhemoglobin(pHbbeta) had lower oxygen affinity than that of stroma-free porcine hemoglobin(pHb). Accourding to analysis of SDS-PAGE, the porcine hemoglobin derivatives were not cross-linked between its subunits. A conjugate was synthesized between pHbbeta and p-toluenesolfonyl chloride-actived dextran.

Preparation of Inositol Tetrakisphosphate and Its Application in Modification of Porcine Hemoglobin.

Modification of hemoglobin using inositol tetrakisphosphate (IP(4)) can improve the oxygen affinity of hemoglubin. Phytase was extracted from wheat bran and purified by ammonium sulphate fractionation, followed by Sephadex G-50 gel filtration and Mono Q chromatography. The purified phytase was used for hydrolysis of phytic acid under controled conditions.

PEG and DBBF modified porcine hemoglobin and their oxygen-carrying capacity.

Modifications of proteins with polyethylene glycol (PEG) have been proven to enlarge molecule size of proteins, to prolong their retention time in the circulation as well as blunt immune or allergic reactions. Hemoglobin cross-linked with small molecular modifiers turns out to be more stable and to have better oxygen carrying capacity. In the present study, four derivatives of PEG with different activation groups, and several PEGs with different molecular weights were covalently bound to porcine hemoglobin (pHb).

Phenylethanolamine N-methyl transferase expression in mouse thymus and spleen.

Catecholamines usually are found in neurons and chromaffin cells of mammals. In this study, surprisingly high levels of the epinephrine synthesizing enzyme phenylethanolamine N-methyl transferase (PNMT) were detected in the thymus of young mice. Levels of PNMT activity in the thymus were comparable to levels in the brainstem and were suppressed by the PNMT inhibitor LY134046.

[A case of human thelaziasis occurred in both eyes].

On October 26, 1987, the authors encountered a case of human thelaziasis involving both eyes. The case in Chollapuk-do, Korea, a farmer aged 23, complained of mild lacrimation for 3 weeks followed by 1 week duration of foreign body sensation in both eyes prior to examination of eyes. The conjunctivae of both eyes appeared slightly reddened.

[Effect of aflatoxin B1 on ultrastructural changes of biliary epithelial cells in mice experimentally infected with Clonorchis sinensis].

The present study was carried out to examine the effect of a carcinogen, aflatoxin B1 on the ultrastructural changes of biliary epithelial cells in mice infected with Clonorchis sinensis. A total of 93 male albino mice(BALB/c strain) was divided into 3 groups; group I, treated with 1.0 ppm aflatoxin B1 for 12 weeks; group II, given 50 C.

[An Epidemiological Study On Zoonoses In Korea].

Helminthic zoonoses are of significant importance to the public health and to the socioeconomic consequences especially in lost-meat, animal products and animal labor. For past several decades in Korea, it has been recognized that endoparasitic infections among domestic animals are extremely common and many of the helminth parasites of man have been acquired from, or are shared with domestic animals. However, there was no survey of a nationwide scale on the prevalence of animal helminthiasis; and control measures are also not satisfactory.

Recent results of mass stool examination for parasitic infections revealed 0.01~0.0001 percent of Paragonimus egg positive rate in Seoul school-children.

[Prevalence Of Capillaria Hepatica Among House Rat In Seoul].

During May-July, 1978 a survey on the prevalence of C. hepatica among house rat(Rattus norvegicus Erxl.) and wild mice (Mus musailus molossinus and Microtus mandarinus) in two districts in Seoul was carried out.

[Intestinal Perforation Due To Infection Of Sparganum Mansoni].

In May 1974, authors encountered a 37 year old Korean male who was suffering from very serious condition of acute abdomen. On exploratory laparotomy, a ruptured granulomatous mass in the proximal portion of the ileum showing extensive inflammatory and gangrenous changes was found and about 4 ft. long of the bowel was resected.

[Studies On The Inducing Possibility Of Human Visceral Larva Migrans Associated With Eating Habit Of Raw Liver Of Domestic Animals].

To observe the possibility of human visceral larva migrans due to eating of raw liver of domestic animals, especially of cattle, and also to serve as a good reference for adequate sanitary measures, the investigation survey was carried out from May 1975 to May 1976. From the subjects of a l,048 inhabitants (male 558, female 490) in five localities including two Provinces and three different cities, food habit was studied by questionnaire mannual. Larvae isolated from liver tissues of cattle, and pig were identified.

[Experimental Study On The Effect Of Cortisone In Mice Infected With Toxocara Canis: Histopathological Findings Of Granuloma In The Liver].

The present study was carried out to examine the effect of "Cortisone" on the worm burden migrated in the organs, and granulomatous change in the liver of mice infected with Toxocara canis eggs. Daily does of 0.5 mg "Cortisone" was administrated subcutaneously to Toxocara-infected mice with different schedule.

[Studies on the incidence of the intestinal protopozoa in the mountainous area of Chollapuk-do].

This study was undertaken in order to elucidate the prevalences of the intestinal protozoan infection according to localities and the mode of the infestation in the mountainous area of Chollapuk-do, Korea during the year 1970-1971. 8,508 of fecal samples were collected among the inhabitants of the mountainous area, which covered 18 Myens(=Township) from 6 Guns(=County) in the eastern part of Chollapuk-do. Most of the inhabitants of this area were engaged in farming and living under lower economic and poor sanitary conditions.

[Prevalence Of Intestinal Parasites In Korea].

A survey of intestinal parasites infection among Korean people has been carried out during July 1969 to December 1970. A total of 2,250 stool specimens (male 1,101, female 1,146) was collected from all the provinces and Seoul city in Korea. The specimens were examined routinely by direct fecal smear, zinc sulfate flotation and formalin-ether sedimentation techniques.
