Silencing resistance genes of pathogenic bacteria by RNA interference (RNAi) is a potential strategy to fight antibiotic-resistant bacterial infections. Currently, RNAi cannot be achieved in bacteria due to the lack of RNA-induced silencing complex machinery and the difficulty of small interfering RNA (siRNA) delivery. Here, we show that exosomal siRNAs can be efficiently delivered into bacterial cells and can silence target genes primarily through translational repression without mRNA degradation.

A cross-band information converter, which links communication and storage modules operating at different wavelengths, is crucial for the development of optical vortex-based information networks. However, due to nonlinear efficiency dependence on orbital angular momentum (OAM), the traditional intensity or polarization distribution-based recognition distortion emerges. Here, by employing the optical vector vortex with a tailored polarization mode as the information carrier of communication network, and the polarization topology one-to-one mapping as the mode identification method, we demonstrate a simple yet flexible frequency converter based on sum-frequency generation (SFG) that preserves the topological invariance of polarization, enabling high-fidelity information transmission.

Phototherapy has emerged as a potential treatment strategy for bacteria-infected wounds, but the inadequate bacteria-capturing ability and excessive damage to normal tissues from single phototherapy are huge limitations. To solve the issues, herein we report the design of chitosan-based hydrogel with bacteria capturing and combined photothermal/photodynamic sterilization functions. Such hydrogel is prepared by mixing chitosan (CS) as matrix, protoporphyrin (PpIX) as photosensitizer and polydopamine (PDA) as photothermal agent and then chemically cross-linking CS with glutaraldehyde.

Addressing the significant discrepancy between actual experimental cutting force and its predicted values derived from traditional constitutive model parameter identification methods, a reverse identification research of the Johnson-Cook (J-C) constitutive model for 304 stainless steel was conducted via genetic algorithm. Considering actual cutting zone and the influence of feed motion on the rake (flank) angle, an unequal division shear zone model was established to implement the theoretical calculation for shear zone stress. Through cutting experiments, the spindle speed was negatively correlated with the cutting force at first, and then became positively correlated; The empirical formula (EXP model) for turning force was corrected, revealing that the EXP model was unable to provide optimal predicted values for cutting force.

Hong-Ou-Mandel interference is an intrinsic quantum phenomenon that goes beyond the possibilities of classical physics, and enables numerous applications in quantum information science. While the photon-photon interaction is fundamentally limited to the bosonic nature of photons and the restricted phase responses from commonly used unitary optical elements, we present that a nonunitary material provides an alternative degree of freedom to control the two-photon quantum interference, even revealing anomalous quantum interference paths that do not exist in a unitary configuration. An elaborate lossy multilayer graphene that can work as a nonunitary beam splitter is used to explore its tunability over the effective photon-photon interaction in spatial modes, and to verify the particle exchange statistics by its experimental implementation in quantum state filter.

Survival models have found wider and wider applications in credit scoring recently due to their ability to estimate the dynamics of risk over time. In this research, we propose a Buckley-James safe sample screening support vector regression (BJS4VR) algorithm to model large-scale survival data by combing the Buckley-James transformation and support vector regression. Different from previous support vector regression survival models, censored samples here are imputed using a censoring unbiased Buckley-James estimator.
