Background: The incidence of second primary lung cancer (SPLC) is increasing with longer survival rates from breast cancer. Despite of studies to suggest the mutual exclusivity of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) and human epidermal growth receptor 2 (HER2) in several cancers, the effect of HER2 expression in breast cancer on EGFR mutations in SPLC is unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the association between HER2 expression and EGFR mutations.

Methods: Data were retrieved from the database of the Korean National Health Insurance Service. Of 145,251 patients diagnosed with breast cancer between 2007 and 2014, 20,870 patients diagnosed with depression or anxiety disorder one year before breast cancer diagnosis were excluded.

Retrievable inferior vena cava filters carry a risk of penetrating into adjacent structures, which may necessitate open retrieval. We report a unique case of a retrievable inferior vena cava filter penetrating into an overlying horseshoe kidney, leading to clinical hematuria. After repeated failed endovascular retrieval, an open approach with associated access challenges was required.

HTT is often misinterpreted as other thyroid tumors, including papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) and medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC), on fine-needle aspiration (FNA) cytology, because of its overlapping cytologic features, such as nuclear grooves and intranulcear pseudoinclusions. Although cytopathologists cannot definitely conclude HTT by FNA cytology, suspicion of HTT is necessary to avoid misdiagnosing HTT as PTC or MTC and to avoid unnecessary aggressive treatment.

Purpose: Breast cancer survivors have slightly increased the risk of second primary cancers. Breast, colon, uterine, and ovarian cancers are common secondary cancers in breast cancer survivors. In this study, we assessed the development of second primary cancers of breast cancer survivors in Korea.

Focused ion beam (FIB) milling using high-energy gallium ions is widely used in the preparation of specimens for transmission electron microscopy (TEM). However, the energetic ion beam induces amorphization on the edge of specimens during milling, resulting in a mischievous influence on the clearness of high-quality transmission electron micrographs. In this work, the amorphization induced by the FIB milling was investigated by TEM for three kinds of materials, metallic materials in bulk shape, and semiconductive and electronic ceramic materials as a substrate for the deposition of thin films.

TMS-induced apoptosis was associated with an increase in the level of cell cycle inhibitor, p27(kip1), through reduction of Akt-mediated Skp2 expression.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFtrans-Stilbenes have been reported to induce cytochrome P450 1B1 (CYP1B1) inhibition and cell death, however, the molecular mechanisms of the effects are not fully understood. We report here that (1-(2-{3-[2-(2,4-dimethoxy-phenyl)-vinyl]-5-methoxy-phenoxy}ethyl)-1H-imidazole), a synthetic stilbene analog (SA) significantly suppressed TCDD-stimulated CYP1B1 mRNA expression. In HL-60 cells, SA induced apoptosis through activation of p38 MAPK and inactivation of Akt, which in turn activated Bad and mitochondrial death signaling pathway, as evidenced by Bax translocation and cytochrome c release.
