The goal of this retrospective cohort study was to determine whether stressors related to military service, determined by a diagnosis of chronic post-traumatic stress disorder (cPTSD) or receiving a Purple Heart (PH), are associated with an increased risk of vascular risk factors and disease, which are of great concern for veterans, who constitute a significant portion of the aging US population. The Veterans Integrated Service Network (VISN) 16 administrative database was searched for individuals 65 years or older between October 1, 1997 to September 30, 1999 who either received a PH but did not have cPTSD (PH+/cPTSD-; n = 1499), had cPTSD without a PH (PH-/cPTSD+; n = 3593), had neither (PH-/cPTSD-; n = 5010), or had both (PH+/cPTSD+; n = 153). In comparison to the control group (PH-/cPTSD-), the PH+/cPTSD- group had increased odds ratios for incidence and prevalence of diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and hyperlipidemia.

Methods: This retrospective study examined data from the 2010 Veterans Health Administration National Patient Care Database outpatient treatment files of Veterans with a newly recognized diagnosis of depression (N = 177,710).
Results: Approximately 48.
Background: The prognostic factors for the recurrence of lymph node (LN) metastasis after dose-escalated radiotherapy (RT) in prostate cancer patients have not been well investigated. We report the prognostic factors and outcomes in patients receiving salvage treatment for LN recurrence after high-dose intensity-modulated RT (IMRT).
Methods: We studied a cohort of 419 patients with localized prostate adenocarcinoma undergoing definitive IMRT (78 Gy).
Objective: This study compared mental health service utilization by treatment modality and determined predictive factors of use among younger-adult (18-35 years), middle-aged adult (36-64 years), and older-adult veterans (65+ years) with a newly recognized diagnosis of depression and/or anxiety disorder.
Methods: This retrospective study used data from the Veterans Health Administration National Patient Care Database outpatient and inpatient treatment files during the 2010 fiscal year (N = 583,692).
Results: Younger adults were the most likely to use mental health services, followed by middle-aged adults and then older adults.
This study used national administrative data from the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) to examine predisposing, enabling, and need factors related to multiple levels of psychotherapy utilization in a sample of veterans with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, or anxiety. The database was queried for all veterans who were newly diagnosed with PTSD, depression, or anxiety during the 2010 fiscal year and received at least 1 outpatient psychotherapy session in the year following diagnosis (N = 130,331). Veterans were classified as low (51.

Method: This study used administrative data extracted from Veteran Health Administration outpatient records to identify patients with a new anxiety diagnosis in fiscal year 2010 (N = 292,244). Logistic regression analyses examined associations among diagnostic specificity, diagnostic location, and mental health service utilization.
Exacerbated oxidative stress and inflammation may induce three types of programmed cell death, autophagy, apoptosis and pyroptosis in unilateral ureteral obstruction (UUO) kidney. Sulforaphane activating NF-E2-related nuclear factor erythroid-2 (Nrf-2) signaling may ameliorate UUO-induced renal damage. UUO was induced in the left kidney of female Wistar rats.

Objective: The accuracy of the diagnosis is vital when administrative databases are used for pharmacoepidemiologic and outcome studies. Data pertaining to the utility of databases for rheumatoid arthritis (RA) are sparse and variable. We assessed the utility of various diagnostic algorithms to identify RA patients within the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) databases.

Methods: We compared mortality rates of older veterans with a PH but without PTSD (PH+/PTSD-) to veterans with a PH and PTSD (PH+/PTSD+), veterans without a PH but with PTSD (PH-/PTSD+), and a comparison group without a PH or PTSD (PH-/PTSD-). Administrative data from the Veterans Integrated Service Network 16 were collected between 10/01/97 and 09/30/99 for veterans who were 65 years or older.
Unlabelled: To explore the association between posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and dementia in older veterans.
Design: Administrative database study of individuals seen within one regional division of the Veterans Affairs healthcare network.
Setting: Veterans Integrated Service Network 16.
Background: Health care utilization and costs among US veterans with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) were compared with those in veterans without COPD.
Methods: A cohort of veterans with COPD was matched for age, sex, race, and index fiscal year to a cohort of veterans without COPD (controls) using data from the Veterans Integrated Service Network (VISN) 16 from 10/1/1997 to 9/30/2004. Annual total and respiratory-related health care service utilization, costs of care, comorbidities, and respiratory medication use at the time of diagnosis were assessed.
Background/purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare prostate cancer detection rates and pathology results, using the Gleason grading system, of 12-core systemic random transrectal ultrasound-guided prostate biopsy (SB) and 3-core finger-guided prostate nodule biopsy (FGNB).
Methods: Between January 2002 and December 2006, 148 patients with digitally palpable prostate nodules received SB and additional FGNB. The prostate cancer detection rates and Gleason scores of positive cancer specimens were compared between SB and combination biopsy (SB + FGNB).
Introduction: We retrospectively compared 6- and 12-core prostate biopsies in Taiwanese men and evaluated the impact of prostate volume (PV), prostate-specific antigen (PSA), and PSA density (PSAD) on the prostate cancer detection rate (PCDR).
Patients And Methods: 1,086 consecutive patients with a total PSA of 4.1-20.
Genitourinary tract tuberculosis is a specific chronic granulomatous infection. However, epididymal tuberculosis presented as a huge scrotal mass is uncommon. We report one case of epididymal tuberculosis that was noted 5 months after the prostate biopsy and was managed with unilateral simple epidymo-orchiectomy.

We tried to determine the associated risk factors of patients who suffered from major complications that required hospitalization after TRUS guided prostate needle biopsies.
Methods: We did a retrospective review of 1875 TRUS guided prostate biopsies performed between January 2002 and December 2005.
Objectives: Although plication of the tunica albuginea with nonabsorbable sutures is an effective method in correcting congenital penile curvature (CPC), suture-related complications may happen. We investigated the long-term outcome and patient satisfaction of a modified tunical plication technique using absorbable sutures.
Materials And Methods: From January 1999 to July 2005, 114 consecutive patients with CPC treated with a modified tunical plication technique by a single surgeon were retrospectively reviewed.
Background: Endovascular abdominal aortic aneurysm repair (EVAR), when compared with conventional open surgical repair, has been shown to reduce perioperative morbidity and mortality. We performed a retrospective cohort study with prospectively collected data from the Department of Veterans Affairs to examine outcomes after elective aneurysm repair.
Study Design: We studied 30-day mortality, 1-year survival, and postoperative complications in 1,904 patients who underwent elective abdominal aortic aneurysm repair (EVAR n=717 [37.
Paclitaxel, one of the most commonly prescribed chemotherapeutic agents, is active against a wide spectrum of human cancer. The mechanism of its cytotoxicity, however, remains controversial. Our results indicate that paclitaxel treatment increases levels of superoxide, hydrogen peroxide, nitric oxide (NO), oxidative DNA adducts, G2-M arrest, and cells with fragmented nuclei.
