The present work aims to assess the biogeochemical and physical sources of variation in the spatial distribution of suspended particulate matter (SPM), its major biotic and abiotic components, particulate metals, and the Redfield (N:P) stoichiometry of particles in a poorly understood basin of the Gulf of Oman. Particulate samples were collected in February 2022 from the Gulf of Oman aboard the R/V Persian Gulf Explorer, revealing surface SPM concentrations ranging from 140 to 1145 μg/l. The elemental composition of crustal-type elements in the surface offshore region confirmed the input of lithogenic components by aeolian dust from the surrounding deserts.

Industrial, agricultural, and recreational activities dump several pollutants into the Caspian Sea, which is one of the main water bodies of Iran. Therefore, performing risk assessments would be required as part of the monitoring programs. Herein, non-cancer health risk assessment of the consumption of macroalgae was performed and the ecological risk assessment of metal pollution in sediments of the southern Caspian Sea was presented using sediment quality guidelines (SQGs), enrichment factors (EF), contamination factors (CF), contamination degrees (CD), pollution load indices (PLI), geo accumulation indices (I), and potential ecological risk indices (RI).

In this study, heavy metal levels in sediments, human hair, and fish muscle tissue as well as organic matter (OM%) content in surface sediments of Chabahar Bay were determined to assess their ecological risks and sources. Totally, 96 samples were collected from 16 stations (Tiss, Konarak, desalination plant, entrance of Chabahar Bay, Posm, Ramin, and reference stations) and were analyzed using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Abundances of elements were of the following order: Ca>Al>Fe>Mg>Na>K>S>P>Ti>Mn>Sr>Ba>Cr>Ni>V>Li>Zn>Cu>Co>Pb>As>Cd>Ag>Se>Sb>Be>Mo>Bi.

In this investigation, δC and δN isotope ratios and heavy metal levels were assessed in macroalgae, sediment samples, and benthic species from northern parts of the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman. The highest δN values in algal samples (11±0.42), indicative of anthropogenic organic N inputs, were detected in the Sadaf region, whereas the lowest values (3.

The Caspian Sea hosts areas of high ecological value as well as industrial, leisure, and agricultural activities that dump into the water body different kinds of pollutants. In this complex context, a proper description of the origin and potential sources of pollution is necessary to address management and mitigation actions aimed at preserving the quality of the water resource and the integrity of the ecosystems. Here, we aimed at detecting sources of both nitrogen inputs, by N stable isotope analysis of macroalgae, and metals in macroalgae and sediments in two highly anthropized coastal stretches at the Iranian side of the Caspian Sea.

In the present study, the concentrations and distribution of 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the water and surface sediments from the Chabahar Bay, Oman Sea, were investigated in May (premonsoon) and December (postmonsoon) 2012. The concentrations of PAHs in the surface water samples ranged from 1.7 to 2.

In this study, concentrations of Aluminum (Al), Iron (Fe), Chromium (Cr), Copper (Cu), Nickel (Ni), Vanadium (V), Zinc (Zn), Arsenic (As), Cobalt (Co) and lead (Pb) in the surface sediments from Chabahar Bay were studied to assess the degree of heavy metal pollution as a consequence of natural and anthropogenic sources. Metal contents in the sediments were observed in the order of: Al>Fe>Cr>V>Ni>Zn>Cu>>As>Pb>Co. According to enrichment factor (EF), Arsenic was higher than 1.

Total and methylmercury concentrations were assessed in muscle and liver of 141 fish samples from the northern part of the Persian Gulf. All fish samples belonged to five different species: grunt, flathead, greasy grouper, tiger-tooth croaker, and silver pomfret. In addition, Hg and methylmercury were analyzed in scalp hair of 19 fishermen living in the same coastal stations of the Persian Gulf and consuming several fish meals a week.

The concentrations of total mercury (Hg) and methyl mercury (MMHg) were determined in 78 marine sediments in the Iranian coastal waters of the Persian Gulf along nine transects perpendicular to the coastline. Total Hg ranged from 10 to 56 ng g( - 1)d.w.

In this study, concentrations of 16 elements were quantified in muscles and livers of 141 fishes belonging to five commercially species. It was also our intention to evaluate potential risks to human health associated with seafood consumption. The grunt, flathead, greasy grouper, tiger-tooth croaker and silver pomfret fish species were obtained from Abadan, Deylam, Bushehr-Nirogah, Dayyer port, Lengeh port and Abbas port in Hormozgan, Bushehr and Khozesran provinces at the Iranian waters of the Persian Gulf.
