Mycophagous beetle females do not behave competitively during intrasexual interactions in presence of a fungal resource.

Intrasexual interactions can determine which individuals within a population have access to limited resources. Despite their potential importance on fitness generally and mating success especially, female-female interactions are not often measured in the same species where male-male interactions are well-defined. In this study, we characterized female-female interactions in , a mycophagous beetle species native to Northeastern North America.

An attempt to replace an ivermectin-resistant Cooperia spp. population by a susceptible one on grazing pastures based on epidemiological principles and refugia management.

The maintenance of anthelmintic-susceptible parasite refugia to delay the onset of anthelmintic resistance is an almost impossible effort in many grazing livestock production countries given that current refugia consist of already resistant parasites. Rather, efforts could be focused on replacing the resistant parasite refugia by susceptible parasite ones and implementing sustainable parasite control measures from then on. To this purpose, a trial was conducted to attempt to establish a new population of ivermectin-susceptible Cooperia sp.

An automated, multiplex-tandem PCR platform for the diagnosis of gastrointestinal nematode infections in cattle: An Australian-European validation study.

Detecting the genera and species of gastrointestinal (GI) nematode infections in faecal samples obtained from cattle requires the incubation of faeces ('larval culture') followed by identification of the third-stage larvae that are harvested after 10-14days. Substantial research in the development of PCR-based methods for the rapid and specific identification GI nematodes has been conducted for small ruminants, whilst only few such assays have been developed for cattle. In the present paper we describe the development of an automated, robotic PCR platform for the detection and genus and/or species-specific identification of GI nematodes from bovine faecal samples.

Cattle rabies vaccination--A longitudinal study of rabies antibody titres in an Israeli dairy herd.

In contrast to many regions of the world where rabies is endemic in terrestrial wildlife species, wildlife rabies has been controlled in Israel by oral rabies vaccination programs, but canine rabies is re-emerging in the northern area of the Golan Heights. From 2009 to 2014 there were 208 animal rabies cases in Israel; 96 (46%) were considered introduced primary cases in dogs, triggering 112 secondary cases. One third (37/112) of the secondary cases were in cattle.

The networks of human gut microbe-metabolite associations are different between health and irritable bowel syndrome.

The goal of this study was to determine if fecal metabolite and microbiota profiles can serve as biomarkers of human intestinal diseases, and to uncover possible gut microbe-metabolite associations. We employed proton nuclear magnetic resonance to measure fecal metabolites of healthy children and those diagnosed with diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS-D). Metabolite levels were associated with fecal microbial abundances.

Effects of dietary inclusion of pea and faba bean as a replacement for soybean meal on grower and finisher pig performance and carcass quality.

To reduce reliance on imported soybean meal (SBM) in temperate environments, pea and faba bean may be alternative protein sources for pig diets. We assessed the effects of dietary pea and faba bean inclusion on grower and finisher pig performance and carcass quality. There were 9 dietary treatments tested on both grower (30 to 60 kg) and finisher (60 to 100 kg) pigs in a dose response feeding trial.

Evaluation of the response to an accelerated immunisation schedule using a canarypox-vectored equine influenza vaccine, shortened interdose intervals and vaccination of young foals.

The results of an accelerated immunisation schedule for horses used as part of the emergency response plan to contain and eradicate equine influenza in Australia in 2007 is described. The horses studied were vaccinated with a recombinant canarypox-vectored vaccine (ProteqFlu®, Merial) with a shorter interdose interval. Vaccinated horses included foals aged less than 4 months.

The cat flea (Ctenocephalides f. felis) is the dominant flea on domestic dogs and cats in Australian veterinary practices.

This study was undertaken to determine the flea diversity on urban dogs and cats in Australia in 2009-2010. A total of 2530 fleas were recovered from 291 animals (151 dogs, 69 cats and 71 uncategorised dogs or cats) from veterinary clinics across five states of Australia. The majority of specimens were from coastal areas.

The effects of a mutation in the myostatin gene on meat and carcass quality.

This study examined the effects of a mutation that inactivates the myostatin gene on calving, growth, carcass and meat quality traits in South Devon cattle. This breed carries at intermediate frequency an 11-bp deletion (MH) in the myostatin gene, known to be associated with the double-muscling phenotype, thus allowing a comparison of three genotype classes. The MH allele was associated with increased calving difficulty, carcass weight, muscle conformation and ratio of polyunsaturated to saturated fatty acids, as well as with reduced growth rate, carcass and meat fatness, and desirable flavour.

Providing patients with information about disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs: Individually or in groups? A pilot randomized controlled trial comparing adherence and satisfaction.

Background: Communicating information about disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDs) before patients start treatment is a key role for some rheumatology clinical nurse specialists. This is done in our unit to promote understanding of the risks and benefits of drug therapy and encourage timely and reliable use of DMARDs. Information is routinely provided individually but this can lead to delays in starting treatment because of limited nursing resources.

Search for quantitative trait loci affecting growth and carcass traits in a cross population of beef and dairy cattle.

A genome scan to detect QTL influencing growth and carcass-related traits was conducted in a Charolais x Holstein crossbred cattle population. Phenotypic measurements related to growth and carcass traits were made on the 235 second-generation crossbred males of this herd (F2 and reciprocal backcrosses), which were born in 4 consecutive annual cohorts. Traits measured in vivo were related to birth dimensions, growth rates, and ultrasound measurements of fat and muscle depth.

Hepatotoxicity associated with sulfasalazine in inflammatory arthritis: A case series from a local surveillance of serious adverse events.

Background: Spontaneous reporting systems for adverse drug reactions (ADRs) are handicapped by under-reporting and limited detail on individual cases. We report an investigation from a local surveillance for serious adverse drug reactions associated with disease modifying anti-rheumatic drugs that was triggered by the occurrence of liver failure in two of our patients.

Methods: Serious ADR reports have been solicited from local clinicians by regular postcards over the past seven years.

Patient self-injection of methotrexate for inflammatory arthritis: a study evaluating the introduction of a new type of syringe and exploring patients' sense of empowerment.

Objectives: To evaluate the introduction of a new type of syringe for patients on a self-injection of methotrexate (MTX) programme and explore patients' sense of empowerment relating to the self-injection of MTX.

Methods: Data were collected using a postal questionnaire, which yielded quantitative and qualitative data. The questionnaire was sent to all eligible patients in the primary care setting who self-injected MTX (n=24).

Benchmarking the nurse consultant role in rheumatology.

This article demonstrates how the four core standards for the nurse consultant role have been developed and applied in the field of rheumatology. The authors suggest that the standards: expert practice, leadership and service redesign, research and education, are relevant for consultant nurses in all specialties. The standards can be used by other nurse consultants to benchmark their practice.

Sensory, cognitive, and linguistic factors in the early academic performance of elementary school children: The Benton-IU project.

Standardized sensory, perceptual, linguistic, intellectual, and cognitive tests were administered to 470 children, approximately 96% of the students entering the first grade in the four elementary schools of Benton County, Indiana, over a 3-year period (1995--1997). The results of 36 tests and subtests administered to entering first graders were well described by a 4-factor solution. These factors and the tests that loaded most heavily on them were reading-related skills (phonological awareness, letter and word identification); visual cognition (visual perceptual abilities, spatial perception, visual memory); verbal cognition (language development, vocabulary, verbal concepts); and speech processing (the ability to understand speech under difficult listening conditions).

Monitoring and assessing the safety of disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs: a West Midlands experience.

Background: Serious adverse events may occur from the use of disease modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs) used to treat rheumatoid arthritis. We describe preliminary data from a regional surveillance scheme. Our aims were to identify a broad range of potential adverse events, to identify deficiencies in care and examine the management of common events in order to improve care.
