Former mine sites can provide habitat for many rare specialised bryophyte species that have adapted to metal-rich soil conditions that are toxic to most other plant species. Background: Little is known about retrieved zirconia platelet toughened alumina (ZPTA) wear particles from ceramic-on-ceramic (COC) total hip arthroplasty. Our objectives were to evaluate clinically retrieved wear particles from explanted periprosthetic hip tissues and to analyze the characteristics of in vitro-generated ZPTA wear particles.

The Bryaceae are a large cosmopolitan moss family including genera of significant morphological and taxonomic complexity. Phylogenetic relationships within the Bryaceae were reconstructed based on DNA sequence data from all three genomic compartments. In the British Quaternary, two post-Cromerian interglacials, the Hoxnian and the Ipswichian, are recognized. Evidence of additional interglacials in this interval is widely accepted in the oceanic record of Quaternary events, and the possibility that at least one additional interglacial of this age is represented in Britain has been discussed. However, in the absence of datable interglacial deposits which are seen to overlie one another, the issue has remained controversial.
