Recent developments in graph neural networks show promise for predicting the occurrence of abnormal grain growth, which has been a particularly challenging area of research due to its apparent stochastic nature. In this study, we generate a large dataset of Monte Carlo simulations of abnormal grain growth. We train simple graph convolution networks to predict which initial microstructures will exhibit abnormal grain growth, and compare the results to a standard computer vision approach for the same task.

: Pharmacogenomics (PGx) is a tool to guide optimal medication selection. Increased demand for personalized medicine and the growing occurrence of chronic diseases are drivers for pharmacogenomic medication management services. A review of implementation models identified a paucity of models delivering these services utilizing pharmacists in primary care.

Article Synopsis
  • Researchers discovered that 4-octyl itaconate (4-OI) can enhance the effects of an oncolytic virus, VSVΔ51, in resistant cancer cells and models, leading to better treatment outcomes.
  • The mechanism involves 4-OI suppressing antiviral immunity in cancer cells by modifying specific proteins, which suggests that combining metabolite-derived drugs with oncolytic viruses could significantly improve cancer treatment.

Background: Frailty is a major geriatric syndrome that predicts increased vulnerability to minor stressor events and adverse outcomes such as falls, fractures, disability and death. The prevalence of frailty among individuals above the age of 65 varies widely with an overall weighted prevalence of 10.7%.

Older frail patients with multiple diagnoses and comprehensive medication lists are at risk of drug interaction, adverse events, and unnecessary medication. The aim of this review is to evaluate existing tools for deprescribing in older frail patients. The identified eight tools can be organised in three levels.

Parental report instruments are a non-invasive way to assess children's language development and have proved to give both valid and reliable results when used with children under the age of 2;6 (and in some cases up to 3). In this study we examine the newly developed Norwegian edition of a language assessment tool for older preschoolers: (CDI-III), investigating whether this parental report tool can be used for assessing the language of monolingual Norwegian-speaking children between 2;6 and 4 years. NCDI-III results for 100 children between 2;6 and 4.

Study Design: Controlled Laboratory Study.

Objective: To compare multilevel posterior cervical fusion (PCF) constructs stopping at C7, T1, and T2 under cyclic load to determine the range of motion (ROM) between the lowest instrumented level and lowest instrumented-adjacent level (LIV-1).

Summary Of Background Data: PCF is a mainstay of treatment for various cervical spine conditions.

The heat shock (HS) response is crucial for cell survival in harmful environments. Nuclear lamin A/C, encoded by the LMNA gene, contributes towards altered gene expression during HS, but the underlying mechanisms are poorly understood. Here, we show that upon HS, lamin A/C was reversibly phosphorylated at serine 22 in concert with HSF1 activation in human cells, mouse cells and Drosophila melanogaster in vivo.

Purpose: To evaluate the maximal load at failure, cyclic displacement, and stiffness of onlay subpectoral biceps tenodesis (BT) with an intramedullary unicortical metal button (MB) versus a unicortical all-suture button (ASB).

Methods: Eighteen matched paired human cadaveric proximal humeri were randomly allocated for subpectoral BT with either ASB or MB using a high-strength suture. Specimens were tested on a servohydraulic mechanical testing apparatus under cyclic load for 1,000 cycles and then loaded to failure.

The thyroid hormone receptor beta 1 (TRβ1) is downregulated in several human cancer cell types, which has been associated with development of an aggressive tumor phenotype and the upregulation of Runt-related transcription factor 2 (Runx2). In this study, we show that the expression of TRβ1 protein is downregulated in human thyroid cancer tissues and cell lines compared with the normal thyroid tissues and primary cell line, whilst Runx2 is upregulated under the same conditions. In contrast, the expression of TRβ1 is upregulated, whereas Runx2 is downregulated, in STIM1, Orai1 and TRPC1 knockdown cells, compared to mock transfected cells.

Background: Family member presence in the intensive care unit is important for patient well-being and recovery. Limitations to visits increase the risk of psychological distress in family members. During the COVID-19 pandemic, in-person visiting restrictions were introduced to prevent the spread of infection.

To assess the impact of a pharmacist-led warfarin to DOAC conversion initiative during the COVID-19 pandemic. Patients who were prescribed warfarin and followed with the anticoagulation clinic for INR monitoring were assessed by outpatient clinical pharmacists as potential candidates for transition to DOACs from March-August 2020. 530 patients were assessed for transition to DOACs, of which 373 (70.

Introduction: After over 20 years of war in the Middle East, orthopedic injuries have been among the most prevalent combat-related injuries, accounting for 14% of all surgical procedures at Role 2/3 (R2/R3) facilities according to the DoD Trauma Registry. To further delineate the role of the deployed orthopedic surgeon on the modern battlefield, a retrospective review was performed highlighting both quantitative and qualitative analysis factors associated with orthopedic surgical care during the war in the Middle East.

Methods: A retrospective review was conducted of orthopedic surgeons in the Middle East from 2001 to 2021.

Background: Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, remote monitoring of patients outside hospitals rapidly increased. Previous studies show that healthcare professionals' competence in digitalization needs to be improved. Little is known about how Covid-19 has affected the use of remote monitoring of cancer patients.

Background: Screening for tuberculosis (TB) disease and infection is often a part of health screening programs offered to refugees, but the yield of screening varies and losses along the steps from screening to treatment completion was reported.

Methods: A retrospective cohort study was performed investigating a newly arrived refugee population offered a systematic refugee health assessment in Aarhus, Denmark. Data was collected on screening, referral, diagnosis and treatment for TB disease and infection.

To describe the employment of an automated text messaging text-bot during the 2019 American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) Midyear Clinical Meeting Residency Showcase and its impact on the number of applications received for the postgraduate year 1 (PGY1) and postgraduate year 2 (PGY2) pharmacy residency programs at a medium-sized community hospital. Visitors at the residency showcase booth were asked to text a code word to a program number. The text-bot collected the visitor's contact information and program of interest (PGY1 or PGY2).

Article Synopsis
  • * A study was conducted on 27 pit lakes to analyze stable elements and radionuclides in water and sediment, using various measurement techniques like ICP-MS and spectrometry.
  • * Overall, water quality was generally good; however, some lakes showed low pH levels and high metal concentrations, with certain sediment samples exhibiting elevated levels of metals compared to natural lakes, while radiation levels remained within environmental norms.

Introduction: Underdetection of dementia in areas with low socioeconomic status (SES) may interfere with findings concerning associations between SES and dementia.

Methods: Using administrative registers we assessed the associations between age- and sex-adjusted dementia incidence and neighborhood socioeconomic status (nSES) in 94 Danish municipalities. Wealth was divided into income quartiles and other nSES variables were dichotomized into high versus low according to the median.

Objective: Most previous studies on advance care planning (ACP) have focused on patients with specific diseases and only a few on frail ageing individuals. We therefore decided to examine the perspective of geriatric patients on ACP. Our research questions include if, when, with whom and with which content geriatric patients wish to have ACP conversations.
