Hippocampal dentate gyral dysplasia is well-described in temporal lobe epilepsy and may be a risk factor for sudden, unexpected death in several populations: infants (sudden infant death syndrome [SIDS], sudden unexpected infant death [SUID]), toddlers (sudden unexpected death of a child [SUDC]), and epileptics (sudden unexpected death in epilepsy [SUDEP]). We examined reports and histopathological slides from autopsies performed at our institution from 2008 through 2016 to determine whether the presence or absence of any of the described forms of such dysplasias (duplications, hyperconvolutions, and granule cell dispersion, including bilamination), correlated with the causes of death. From well over 4000 autopsies, we identified 949 autopsies with a neuropathology examination by a neuropathologist.

The Spring River in southeastern Kansas historically received inputs of cadmium, copper, lead, and zinc that reduced the prevalence of several sensitive and imperiled fishes. Long-term reductions in these toxic metals have occurred since the 1990's because of management activities, but presently it is unknown how riffle fish communities responded to improved water quality.

The Aveir DR dual-chamber Leadless Pacemaker system (Abbott Laboratories) was recently approved by the US Food and Drug Administration and is heralded to be the next generation of leadless pacemakers. Earlier generations of leadless pacemakers could only provide single-chamber right ventricular pacing, limiting their application to a small subset of patients in whom pacemaker therapy is indicated. With the expansion of pacing therapy, the Aveir DR system expands availability of leadless pacing to more patients.

Rare genetic respiratory disease has an incidence rate of more than 1:2500 live births in Northern Europe and carries significant disease burden. Early diagnosis improves outcomes, but many individuals remain without a confident genetic diagnosis. Improved and expanded molecular testing methods are required to improve genetic diagnosis rates and thereby improve clinical outcomes.

The use of endovascular, percutaneous interventions to treat cardiac, arterial, and venous pathologies is becoming increasingly common in medical practice. While endovascular device placement typically carries a low risk, device migration remains a persistent problem with these procedures for which anesthesia providers must have a high index of suspicion. Anesthesia providers should be aware of the wide range of indications for such devices, potential migration locations, and hemodynamic consequences of both the inciting pathology and device migration so they can safely care for patients in these settings.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFIn two laboratory trials, natural products, including freshly picked leaves from spearmint, rosemary, and tansy plants, a water extract from soybean plants, peels from a common cucumber, and 1% peppermint oil in hexane, were placed in a moist harborage preferred by Argentine ants, (Mayr), and the number of ants entering the harborage after two and four hours was counted. None of the recommended home remedies (tansy, cucumber, or soybean extract) deterred ants from an attractive, moist harborage in either trial, even when the quantity of these treatments was increased 4- to 10-fold. Freshly picked leaves from rosemary and spearmint plants deterred ants from harboring, and the 1% peppermint oil was the most deterrent of all treatments.

Our design approach is based on a copolymer of poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate and a photocleavable 2-((((2-nitrobenzyl)oxy)carbonyl)amino)ethyl methacrylate monomer which can liberate amine groups upon visible light irradiation, allowing for single-chain collapse the complexation of Cu(ii) ions. We initially demonstrate the successful applicability of our design approach for the batch photochemical synthesis of Cu(ii) SCNPs and transfer the concept to photoflow conditions, enabling, for the first time, the continuous production of functional SCNPs.

A single protein-altering variant is often identified in a recessive gene in individuals with developmental disorders (DD), but the prevalence of pathogenic noncoding "second hits" in trans with these is unknown.
Methods: In 4073 genetically undiagnosed rare-disease trio probands from the 100,000 Genomes project, we identified rare heterozygous protein-altering variants in recessive DD-associated genes.
Early patterning of DNA methylation (DNAm) may play an important role in later disease development. To better understand intergenerational epigenetic inheritance, we investigated the correlation between DNAm in blood in mother-newborn and in father-newborn pairs in the Isle of Wight (IoW) birth cohort. For parent-newborn pairs (n = 48), offspring DNAm was measured in cord blood and the parent's DNAm in whole blood.

In our study, we identified five distinct types of abnormal splice-causing mutations in patients with rare genetic disorders and developed a tailored antisense oligonucleotide for each mutation type using phosphorodiamidate morpholino oligomers with or without octa-guanidine dendrimers and 2'-O-methoxyethyl phosphorothioate. We observed variations in treatment effects and efficiencies, influenced by both the chosen chemistry and the specific nature of the aberrant splicing patterns targeted for correction.
