To test the hypothesis that basal energy expenditure may be abnormal in azotemia, oxygen consumption was studied in partially nephrectomized, azotemic male Sprague-Dawley rats and sham operated control rats 10, 16, and 31 days after surgery. Observed decreased oxygen consumption in the azotemic group was related to their decreased body weight. There was no significant difference in oxygen consumption between groups when oxygen consumption values were related to weight.

Six children who were anuric, intolerant of oral nutrition and depleted of body protein, were treated with total parenteral nutrition. Nitrogen utilization was studied during infusion of dextrose alone and dextrose with essential amino acids. An increase in non-protein (glucose) calories from 20 to 70 kcal/kg/day progressively reduced body protein catabolism; nitrogen balance became less negative.

We determined the effects of feeding, starvation, and glucose infusion after starvation in newborn guinea pigs. We determined the rate of 14C-leucine incorporation into skeletal muscle (KS) as a measure of muscle protein synthesis and the rate of excretion of 3-methylhistidine as a measure of muscle myofibrillar protein catabolism (Kc). Fed newborns, who were in positive nitrogen balance, had the highest Ks and lowest Kc, while starved newborns had the lowest Ks and highest Kc.

The clearance of non-radioactive meglumine Iothalamate (Conray 60), assayed by fluorescent excitation analysis, has been shown to be a good indicator of the glomerular filtration rate (GFR). Investigations in rats by the constant infusion technique showed a good correlation with insulin clearance. In a group of ten children and one adult, we obtained excellent agreement between GFR determinations by clearance of Conray 60 and I-125 sodium Iothalamate, using the single injection technique, and taking samples from 10 min to 4 hr after injection.
