Toxicity and anti-inflammatory effects of Eleutherine bulbosa (Miller) Urb, ethanolic extract, in zebrafish (Danio rerio).

Introduction: Eleutherine bulbosa (Miller) Urb, popularly known as "marupa-zinho", is frequently used in traditional medicine for treating various diseases, including hypertension, ulcers, constipation, and intestinal infection. However, there is little scientific knowledge available regarding the pharmacological effects of this species. Thus in vivo and in silico phytochemical studies are required to establish whether this plant has these effects.

Barriers to diffusion and implementation of pediatric minimally invasive surgery in Brazil.

Background: The main barriers to the broad implementation of pediatric minimally invasive surgery (MIS) are technological, technical, and epistemological barriers, as well as the rarity of certain pathologies. These issues are presumed to be more significant in low- and middle-income countries. This study aimed to identify and analyze the factors limiting the diffusion and implementation of pediatric MIS in Brazil.

Resistance of the fiber-derived geotextile from Typha domingensis submitted to field degradation.

Geotextiles made from plant fibers creates a suitable environment for plant growth as part of soil bioengineering techniques. The faster decomposition of plant fiber geotextiles compared to synthetic ones demands the use of composites that enhance their waterproofing and extend their durability in the environment. The objective of this work was to evaluate the resistance of a geotextile made with Thypha domingensis to degradation caused by climatic variables.

Endothelium-related biomarkers enhanced prediction of kidney support therapy in critically ill patients with non-oliguric acute kidney injury.

Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a common condition in hospitalized patients who often requires kidney support therapy (KST). However, predicting the need for KST in critically ill patients remains challenging. This study aimed to analyze endothelium-related biomarkers as predictors of KST need in critically ill patients with stage 2 AKI.

Surgical treatment for severe pediatric tracheobronchomalacia: the 20-year experience of a single center.

Objective: In children with tracheobronchomalacia, surgical management should be reserved for the most severe cases and be specific to the type and location of tracheobronchomalacia. The goal of this study is to describe the presentation and outcomes of children with severe tracheobronchomalacia undergoing surgery.

Methods: Retrospective case series of 20 children operated for severe tracheobronchomalacia at a tertiary hospital from 2003 to 2023.

Giant omphalocele: A novel approach for primary repair in the neonatal period using botulinum toxin.

Introduction: Giant omphalocele (GO) is a complex condition for which many surgical treatments have been developed; however, no consensus on its treatment has been reached. The benefits and efficacy of botulinum toxin A (BTA) in the repair of large abdominal wall defects in adults has been proven, and its reported use in children has recently grown. The goal of this study is to describe a novel technique for primary repair of GO using BTA during the neonatal period and report our initial experience.

Diclofenac, ibuprofen, and paracetamol biodegradation: overconsumed non-steroidal anti-inflammatories drugs at COVID-19 pandemic.

The consumption of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) have increased significantly in the last years (2020-2022), especially for patients in COVID-19 treatment. NSAIDs such as diclofenac, ibuprofen, and paracetamol are often available without restrictions, being employed without medical supervision for basic symptoms of inflammatory processes. Furthermore, these compounds are increasingly present in nature constituting complex mixtures discarded at domestic and hospital sewage/wastewater.

First record of rainbow shrimp, exotic species Mierspenaeopsis sculptilis (Heller, 1862), in the Brazilian coastal amazon, validated by DNA barcode.

Background: This is the first record of the alien shrimp Mierspenaeopsis sculptilis in Brazil. The invasion was detected within Marine Extractive Reserves based on eight specimens accidentally caught by local fishermen using trawlnets focused on fisheries of native species. These specimens were transported to the Laboratory of Applied Genetics and morphologically identified as Mierspenaeopsis sculptilis (rainbow shrimp).

Development of nanostructured formulation from naringenin and silk fibroin and application for inhibition of lipoxygenase (LOX).

A simple low-energy method was used to obtain polymeric nanoparticles containing silk fibroin (SF), fatty butyl esters (oily phase) and the flavonoid naringenin. Experimental planning (Box-Behnken) was applied to investigate the optimal conditions for three factors (variation of the concentrations of SF, naringenin and fatty butyl ester) at three levels, with evaluation of particle size, polydispersity index (PDI) and zeta potential (ZP) as responses. The results showed that the polymeric particle was formed with sizes of 179.

Syndecan-1 predicts hemodynamic instability in critically ill patients under intermittent hemodialysis.

Introduction: Up to 70% of intermittent hemodialysis (IHD) sessions in critically ill patients are complicated by hemodynamic instability. Although several clinical characteristics have been associated with hemodynamic instability during IHD, the discriminatory capacity of predicting such events during IHD sessions is less defined. In the present study, we aimed to analyse endothelium-related biomarkers collected before IHD sessions and their capacity to predict hemodynamic instability related to IHD in critically ill patients.

Anti-inflammatory potential of baicalein combined with silk fibroin protein in a zebrafish model (Danio rerio).

Baicalein (BA) is a flavonoid with wide-ranging pharmacological activity. However, its biological evaluation is hampered by its low solubility in aqueous medium, making forms of incorporation that improve its solubility necessary. In the present study, BA was combined with a solution of silk fibroin protein (SF), a biomaterial used too as a drug carrier, to evaluate the anti-inflammatory potential of this combination, in vivo, in an experimental model, zebrafish (Danio rerio).

Primary closure of a sternal cleft in the neonatal period.

Sternal cleft is a rare malformation of the midline fusion of the sternal bars; the most common form is the superior partial defect. Surgical correction with primary closure is the gold standard. It is recommended that the procedure be performed before 3 months of age because of the greater compliance and maximal flexibility of the thoracic wall.

Lilalva Scale: soft-hard technology to measure clinical competencies in emergencies of nurses.

Objectives: to present the visual identity of a soft-hard technology; to describe its technical characteristics, standardization and norms of criteria for the interpretation of results, in order to measure clinical competencies in emergencies of nurses.

Methods: article developed as a methodological study for the creation of the graphic image of the scale and standardization based on previous studies of validity and reliability evidence.

Results: the designed technology was named "Lilalva Scale for Measuring Clinical Competencies in Emergencies of Nurses".

Short-term systemic methotrexate administration in rats induces astrogliosis and microgliosis.

Methotrexate (MTX), an antifolate drug, is widely used in chemotherapeutic protocols for metastatic and primary brain tumors and some autoimmune diseases. Its efficacy for brain tumors is limited by the high incidence of central nervous system (CNS) complications. This investigation aimed to observe the morphological effects, including astroglial and microglial responses, following systemic short-term MTX administration in adult rats.

Ventral hernia secondary to giant omphalocele in a child: combined approach of botulinum toxin and preoperative progressive pneumoperitoneum.

Omphalocele is a congenital abdominal wall defect that occurs approximately 1 in 4000-6000 live births. The abdominal-visceral disproportion, large diameter of the defect, volume of liver in the sac along with high incidence of associated anomalies make the surgical management a real challenge. Currently, there are two strategies for managing giant omphaloceles, staged surgical closure and nonoperative delayed closure.

Professional competence of nurses in emergency services: evidence of content validity.

Objective: To verify the evidence of content validity of the Identifying Issues (Identification questions) elaborated from the theoretical-logical model of the Matrix and the Profile of Professional Competence of the emergency nurse.

Method: Descriptive and methodological study of a quantitative approach with a psychometric reference as a precursor in the elaboration of a measurement instrument for the evaluation of competencies. The study was conducted in 2013 in Brazil, with a national sample of nurses specialized in emergency services and/or with professional competence in the area.

Evidence of validity of the Competence Scale of Actions of Nurses in Emergencies.

Objective: to evaluate the validity of the Competence Scale of Actions of Nurses in Emergencies based on internal structure, internal consistency, and external criteria.

Methods: methodological study to verify new evidence of validity of the Scale, with contents previously validated. The Scale has 81 measurable actions at five levels of competence and can be applied both for self- and/or hetero-evaluation.

Essential oil of Pterodon polygalaeflorus Benth attenuates nociception in mice.

Essential oils (EO) are volatile liquids responsible for the aroma of plants. Pterodon polygalaeflorus seeds have received widespread use in folk medicine for the treatment of inflammatory diseases. For this reason and because Pterodon polygalaeflorus seeds have great EO content, which is frequently pharmacologically active, the present study aimed to evaluate the antinociceptive effect of EO from Pterodon polygalaeflorus (EOPPgfl) and its acute toxic effects.

Assessment of professional competence of nurses in emergencies: created and validated instrument.

Objective: To create an instrument to assess the professional competence of nurses in emergencies.

Method: Methodological study carried out between 2013 and 2016 in a Brazilian university. We used the Pasquali's model and Psychometrics as references because they allow subjective phenomena to be measured.

Analysis of the PvuII and XbaI polymorphisms in the estrogen receptor alpha gene in girls with central precocious puberty: a pilot study.

Background: Precocious puberty (PP) is defined as premature pubertal development. Its consequences surpass the physical evidence of sexual maturity with the premature epiphyseal closure of the long bones and the reduction of adult stature by varied degrees. Central PP is characteristically dependent on GnRH and most of its causes are not completely known.

Severe episodic memory impairment after strategic infarct: A case report.

Brain infarcts located in strategic regions often result in cognitive impairment. Based on a case study, this paper describes unusual and specific clinical and neuropsychological features of a strategic ischemic lesion in the left medial temporal lobe (MTL) structures. Taken together with the literature data, the case illustrates that a unilateral strategic infarct in MTL structures may result in severe impairment of episodic memory (EM), which refers to the ability to encode and retrieve personal experiences, including information about the time and place of an event and detailed description of the event itself.

Sleep and executive functions in older adults: A systematic review.

Introduction: A recent increase in studies suggests a role of age-related sleep changes in executive functions (EF). However, this relationship remains unclear and mixed results have emerged.

Objective: To investigate how age-related sleep changes may play an important role in the extent to which healthy older adults exhibit decline in EF.

Selectivity curves of the capture of mangrove crab (Ucides cordatus) on the northern coast of Brazil using bayesian inference.

Fishing selectivity of the mangrove crab Ucides cordatus in the north coast of Brazil can be defined as the fisherman's ability to capture and select individuals from a certain size or sex (or a combination of these factors) which suggests an empirical selectivity. Considering this hypothesis, we calculated the selectivity curves for males and females crabs using the logit function of the logistic model in the formulation. The Bayesian inference consisted of obtaining the posterior distribution by applying the Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method to software R using the OpenBUGS, BRugs, and R2WinBUGS libraries.
