Machine learning approaches for spatial omics data analysis in digital pathology: tools and applications in genitourinary oncology.

Recent advances in spatial omics technologies have enabled new approaches for analyzing tissue morphology, cell composition, and biomolecule expression patterns . These advances are promoting the development of new computational tools and quantitative techniques in the emerging field of digital pathology. In this review, we survey current trends in the development of computational methods for spatially mapped omics data analysis using digitized histopathology slides and supplementary materials, with an emphasis on tools and applications relevant to genitourinary oncological research.

Non-Mitochondrial Aconitase-2 Mediates the Transcription of Nuclear-Encoded Electron Transport Chain Genes in Fission Yeast.

Aconitase-2 (Aco2) is present in the mitochondria, cytosol, and nucleus of fission yeast. To explore its function beyond the well-known role in the mitochondrial tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle, we conducted genome-wide profiling using the aco2ΔNLS mutant, which lacks a nuclear localization signal (NLS). The RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) data showed a general downregulation of electron transport chain (ETC) genes in the aco2ΔNLS mutant, except for those in the complex II, leading to a growth defect in respiratory-prone media.

RNA-Sequencing Analysis Reveals the Role of Mitochondrial Energy Metabolism Alterations and Immune Cell Activation in Form-Deprivation and Lens-Induced Myopia in Mice.

Myopia is a substantial global public health concern primarily linked to the elongation of the axial length of the eyeball. While numerous animal models have been employed to investigate myopia, the specific contributions of genetic factors and the intricate signaling pathways involved remain incompletely understood. In this study, we conducted RNA-seq analysis to explore genes and pathways in two distinct myopia-inducing mouse models: form-deprivation myopia (FDM) and lens-induced myopia (LIM).

Inverted U-Shaped Relationship between Obesity Parameters and Bone Mineral Density in Korean Adolescents.

As the association between obesity and bone health remains controversial in children and adolescents, we investigate the effects of obesity parameters on bone mineral density (BMD) in 2060 Korean adolescents who participated in the 2008-2011 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES). Multiple regression analysis and analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) were conducted to examine both the linear and non-linear associations between total-body-less-head (TBLH) BMD and four obesity parameters: body mass index, waist circumference, waist-to-height ratio, and total-body fat mass (FM). In a multiple linear regression analysis adjusted for age, menarcheal status (in females only), and total-body lean mass, there was no significant linear association between obesity parameters and TBLH BMD, except for total-body FM in males.

Variations in aragonite saturation state and its controlling factors in the South Yellow Sea in spring and autumn.

To assess the progression of ocean acidification in the South Yellow Sea (SYS), the aragonite saturation state (Ω) was determined from dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) and total alkalinity (TA) in the surface and bottom waters of the SYS in spring and autumn. The Ω exhibited large spatiotemporal variations in the SYS; DIC was a major factor controlling the Ω variations, whereas temperature, salinity, and TA were minor factors. Surface DIC concentrations were mainly influenced by the lateral transport of the DIC-enriched Yellow River waters and DIC-depleted East China Sea Surface Water; bottom DIC concentrations were affected by aerobic remineralization in spring and autumn.

Anatomical feasibility of fenestrated stent graft to treat complex abdominal aortic aneurysms from a Korean single institute database.

Purpose: This study aims to investigate the feasibility of Zenith Fenestrated AAA Endovascular Graft (Z-FEN, Cook Medical) from a single Korean institution database by evaluating the vascular anatomy of Korean abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) patients with hostile aortic neck.

Methods: This is a retrospective study on patients with AAA who underwent endovascular aortic repair (EVAR) and open surgery repair between January 2012 and December 2021 (n = 211). The anatomic characteristics of the aortic neck were evaluated using 3-dimensional reconstructed computed tomographic scans.

Operation and management of a community treatment center using telemedicine for foreign patients with mild COVID-19 symptoms.

South Korean studies on coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) treatment have described the use of community treatment centers (CTCs), which combine elements of the home and hospital, to isolate and treat mild COVID-19 patients. While the number of South Koreans diagnosed with COVID-19 cases has varied greatly by season, the number of confirmed cases in foreign nationals has shown no seasonality, with an average of around 25 to 30 per day. For foreign patients, accommodation arrangements and travel routes may be difficult; they may also have difficulty accessing medical care, so require careful management.

Algal plankton turn to hunting to survive and recover from end-Cretaceous impact darkness.

The end-Cretaceous bolide impact triggered the devastation of marine ecosystems. However, the specific kill mechanism(s) are still debated, and how primary production subsequently recovered remains elusive. We used marine plankton microfossils and eco-evolutionary modeling to determine strategies for survival and recovery, finding that widespread phagotrophy (prey ingestion) was fundamental to plankton surviving the impact and also for the subsequent reestablishment of primary production.

Clinical Course and Molecular Viral Shedding Among Asymptomatic and Symptomatic Patients With SARS-CoV-2 Infection in a Community Treatment Center in the Republic of Korea.

Importance: There is limited information about the clinical course and viral load in asymptomatic patients infected with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2).

Objective: To quantitatively describe SARS-CoV-2 molecular viral shedding in asymptomatic and symptomatic patients.

Design, Setting, And Participants: A retrospective evaluation was conducted for a cohort of 303 symptomatic and asymptomatic patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection between March 6 and March 26, 2020.

On impact and volcanism across the Cretaceous-Paleogene boundary.

The cause of the end-Cretaceous mass extinction is vigorously debated, owing to the occurrence of a very large bolide impact and flood basalt volcanism near the boundary. Disentangling their relative importance is complicated by uncertainty regarding kill mechanisms and the relative timing of volcanogenic outgassing, impact, and extinction. We used carbon cycle modeling and paleotemperature records to constrain the timing of volcanogenic outgassing.

Diversity decoupled from ecosystem function and resilience during mass extinction recovery.

The Chicxulub bolide impact 66 million years ago drove the near-instantaneous collapse of ocean ecosystems. The devastating loss of diversity at the base of ocean food webs probably triggered cascading extinctions across all trophic levels and caused severe disruption of the biogeochemical functions of the ocean, and especially disrupted the cycling of carbon between the surface and deep sea. The absence of sufficiently detailed biotic data that span the post-extinction interval has limited our understanding of how ecosystem resilience and biochemical function was restored; estimates of ecosystem 'recovery' vary from less than 100 years to 10 million years.

Preventive effects of seat belts on traumatic brain injury in motor vehicle collisions classified by crash severities and collision directions.

Purpose: This study aimed to measure the preventive effect of seat belt on traumatic brain injury (TBI) and to compare the effect according to the crash severities and collision directions.

Methods: Korea In-Depth Accident Study (KIDAS) has collected vehicle and demographic data on injured occupants involved in motor vehicle collisions (MVCs) who visited three emergency medical centers for calendar years 2011-2016. Primary and secondary end points were TBI (abbreviated injury score 2+) and in-hospital mortality.

Objectives: Truck vehicles (TVs) have a different structure and stiffness than non-TVs and are used commercially for transporting goods. This study aimed to analyze whether truck occupants have a greater risk of serious injury than those of other types of vehicles.

Methods: Crash data were obtained from the Korean In-Depth Data Analysis Study (KIDAS) for calendar years 2011-2016.

Prolonged hypokalemia from chronic laxative abuse is recognized as the cause of chronic tubulointerstitial disease, known as "hypokalemic nephropathy," but it is not clear whether it contributes to acute kidney injury (AKI). A 42-year-old woman with a history of chronic kidney disease as a result of chronic laxative abuse from a purging type of anorexia nervosa (AN-P), developed an anuric AKI requiring hemodialysis and a mild AKI 2 months later. Transformation of Ramsey electromagnetically induced absorption into magnetic-field induced transparency in a paraffin-coated Rb vapor cell.

We report on magnetic-field induced transparency (MIT) based on Ramsey electromagnetically induced absorption (EIA) in a paraffin-coated Rb vapor cell. Changing the laser polarization from linear to circular in the presence of a weak residual transverse magnetic field to the laser propagation, the narrow absorption due to the Ramsey EIA transformed into the transparency due to MIT of the 5S1/2 (F = 2)-5P3/2 (F' = 3) transition of 87Rb in the paraffin-coated Rb vapor cell. The spectral widths of the EIA and MIT in the Hanle configuration were measured to be 0.

A plasma-treated chalcogenide switch device for stackable scalable 3D nanoscale memory.

Stackable select devices such as the oxide p-n junction diode and the Schottky diode (one-way switch) have been proposed for non-volatile unipolar resistive switching devices; however, bidirectional select devices (or two-way switch) need to be developed for bipolar resistive switching devices. Here we report on a fully stackable switching device that solves several problems including current density, temperature stability, cycling endurance and cycle distribution. We demonstrate that the threshold switching device based on As-Ge-Te-Si material significantly improves cycling endurance performance by reactive nitrogen deposition and nitrogen plasma hardening.

Polyuria with the Concurrent manifestation of Central Diabetes Insipidus (CDI) & Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (DM).

We report a rare case of the concurrent manifestation of central diabetes insipidus (CDI) and type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM). A 56 year-old man was diagnosed as a type 2 DM on the basis of hyperglycemia with polyuria and polydipsia at a local clinic two months ago and started an oral hypoglycemic medication, but resulted in no symptomatic improvement at all. Upon admission to the university hospital, the patient's initial fasting blood sugar level was 140 mg/dL, and he showed polydipsic and polyuric conditions more than 8 L urine/day.

Electrolyte imbalances and nephrocalcinosis in acute phosphate poisoning on chronic type 1 renal tubular acidosis due to Sjögren's syndrome.

Although renal calcium crystal deposits (nephrocalcinosis) may occur in acute phosphate poisoning as well as type 1 renal tubular acidosis (RTA), hyperphosphatemic hypocalcemia is common in the former while normocalcemic hypokalemia is typical in the latter. Here, as a unique coexistence of these two seperated clinical entities, we report a 30-yr-old woman presenting with carpal spasm related to hypocalcemia (ionized calcium of 1.90 mM/L) due to acute phosphate poisoning after oral sodium phosphate bowel preparation, which resolved rapidly after calcium gluconate intravenously.
