Cysteine-rich angiogenic inducer 61 (CYR61) is a protein from the CCN family of matricellular proteins that play diverse regulatory roles in the extracellular matrix. CYR61 is involved in cell adhesion, migration, proliferation, differentiation, apoptosis, and senescence. Here, we show that CYR61 induces chemoresistance in triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC).

Article Synopsis
  • Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is a highly aggressive form of breast cancer characterized by poor outcomes due to rapid growth and the ability to spread.
  • Research discovered that the protein CCN3 is overexpressed in TNBC, and its knockdown led to reduced cancer stem cell formation, tumor growth, and metastasis in laboratory models.
  • The study found that CCN3 promotes the expression of GPNMB, which activates the EGFR/MAPK signaling pathway, and also enhances Wnt signaling, indicating that CCN3 could be targeted for developing new therapies for TNBC.
