Sialylation plays an important role in self-recognition, as well as keeping the complement and innate immune systems in check. It is unclear whether the reduced sialylation seen during aging and in mice heterozygous for the null mutant of UDP-N-acetylglucosamine 2-epimerase/N-acetylmannosamine kinase (Gne+/-), an essential enzyme for sialic acid biosynthesis, contributes to retinal inflammation and degeneration. We found a reduction of polysialic acid and trisialic acid expression in several retinal layers in Gne+/- mice at 9 months of age compared to Gne+/+ wildtype (WT) mice, which was associated with a higher microglial expression of the lysosomal marker CD68.

Immune dysregulation is thought to contribute to chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) risk, but biological mechanisms are unclear. We discovered that increased serum levels of B-cell activating factor (BAFF), an important regulator of B-cell maturation, were associated with a decreased risk of CLL, even >10 years after blood draw. Our findings suggest that BAFF could be a useful biomarker to assess risk among individuals at high risk, such as those with monoclonal b-cell lymphocytosis.

Despite over 41 million registered potential volunteer stem cell donors worldwide, many patients in need of a transplant do not find an HLA-matched unrelated donor or cord blood units, with the respective odds differing significantly between various populations. In this study, we analysed data of 2205 unsuccessful real-life donor searches sent to the DKMS Registry to identify populations in which further donor recruitment would be associated with particularly large patient benefits. For that purpose, we estimated haplotype frequencies of 67 donor populations at various sample sizes and entered them into two different mathematical models.

We incorporate Se into the 3D halide perovskite framework using the zwitterionic ligand: SeCYS (NH(CH)Se), which occupies both the X and A sites in the prototypical ABX perovskite. The new organoselenide-halide perovskites: (SeCYS)PbX (X=Cl, Br) expand upon the recently discovered organosulfide-halide perovskites. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction and pair distribution function analysis reveal the average structures of the organoselenide-halide perovskites, whereas the local lead coordination environments and their distributions were probed through solid-state Se and Pb NMR, complemented by theoretical simulations.
