A 44-year-old male suffered from an inactive pituitary adenoma measuring 20mm in computed tomography (CT) scan and nuclear magnetic resonance tomography (NMR). The tumor was surgically resected via the transnasal-transsphenoidal route. Surgical specimens revealed a typical, sparsely granulated adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) cell adenoma, but also a granulomatous inflammation mostly in the periphery of the tumor, corresponding to a granulomatous hypophysitis.

Activation of the Wnt/wingless signalling cascade is a key mechanism in developmental morphogenesis, whereas aberrant nuclear accumulation of beta-catenin in adult tissues seems to be associated with neoplastic transformation and tumour progression. Adamantinomatous craniopharyngiomas carry activating mutations in exon 3 of the beta-catenin gene, which results in a distinct pattern of nuclear beta-catenin accumulation in up to 95% of respective tumour specimens. To better characterise the impact of nuclear beta-catenin aggregation in these neoplasms, we systematically examined epithelial differentiation and cell cycle-associated molecules in accumulating compared to non-accumulating tumour cell clusters using a cohort of 65 adamantinomatous craniopharyngiomas.

We evaluate the current role of microsurgery for Cushing's disease (CD) and the efficacy of adjuvant treatment modalities. The standard treatment for primary CD remains transsphenoidal surgery followed by adjuvant therapy in cases with persisting hypercortisolism. Moderately severe cases are treated with radiotherapy, while in the very severe adrenalectomy is performed.

In compliance with federal regulations, blood banks routinely use leukocyte depletion filters to eliminate contaminating leukocytes from blood products such as red blood cell and platelet concentrates. We developed and optimized conditions to elute leukocytes adsorbed to these filters; resulting in leukocyte suspensions which we termed Filter Buffy Coats (FBCs). A new online monitoring technique to measure the physiological parameters, dissolved oxygen (DO) and pH of microbial cultures in continuously shaken 24-well microtiter plates (MTP) is introduced. The new technology is based on immobilised fluorophores at the bottom of standard 24-well MTPs. The sensor MTP is installed in a sensor dish reader, which can be fixed on an orbital shaker.

We develop a highly specific antibody-dye conjugate for optical imaging of peripheral lymph nodes. The contrast agent consists of the monoclonal antibody recognizing endothelial ligands for the lymphocyte homing receptor L-selectin, MECA-79, and a near-infrared (near-IR) fluorescent indotricarbocyanine dye. The targeting and biodistribution behavior of MECA-79 is studied after radio-iodination and intravenous injection into mice demonstrating specific uptake in lymph nodes and accumulation in high endothelial venules (HEV).

The anti-adhesion gel ADCON-L has been available since the end of the 1990s. During disc surgery it can be applied to the spinal nerve roots and the dura mater spinalis in order to inhibit fibroblast migration and thus avoid postoperative adhesions or excessive keloids, respectively. Due to the way ADCON-L works, inadvertent, intraoperational dural lesions may stay open much longer than usual because ADCON-L inhibits the natural healing process.
