Membrane proteins, especially extracellular domains, are key therapeutic targets due to their role in cell communication and associations. Yet, their functions and interactions often remain unclear. This study presents a general method to discover interactions of membrane proteins with immune cells and subsequently to deorphanize their respective receptors.

Two observational studies were conducted to support an initiative to qualify translational kidney safety biomarkers as clinical drug development tools that identify tubular injury prior to changes in estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR). Normal healthy volunteers provided three morning spot urine collections over 4 weeks. Patients undergoing surgical resection and intrathoracic cisplatin for malignant pleural mesothelioma provided urine samples pre- and postoperatively at 4, 8, and 12 hours and daily for 6 days.

Microbiology reference laboratories perform a crucial role within public health systems. This role was especially evident during the COVID-19 pandemic. In this Viewpoint, we emphasise the importance of microbiology reference laboratories and highlight the types of digital data and expertise they provide, which benefit national and international public health.

Background: Wearable technologies have the potential to support health promotion and disease prevention. However, it remains unclear how the role of social determinants of health (SDoH) and digital determinants of health (DDoH) plays in this context.

Objective: This study investigates differences in sociodemographic factors and digital health literacy between wearable users and non-users, whether the association with wearable use varies across age groups and its potential mediator.

This position paper from the Digital Public Health Section of the German Public Health Association defines digital public health (DiPH) and describes its goals and potential. It also addresses the current situation and challenges as well as the need for action in Germany. The focus here is on the presentation of the nationwide promotion of (digital) health literacy; the application of DiPH in prevention, health promotion, and healthcare; the use of innovative preventive strategies for the prevention of non-communicable diseases; and the teaching of DiPH in academic public health programs.

Growing evidence suggests that somatic mutations may be a major cause of the aging process. However, it remains to be tested whether the predictions of the theory also apply to species with longer life spans than humans. is a genus of freshwater polyps with remarkable regeneration abilities and a potentially unlimited life span under laboratory conditions.

Prax Kinderpsychol Kinderpsychiatr

November 2024

Article Synopsis
  • - The study examines whether specialized treatment, specifically transference focused psychotherapy in a day hospital setting, can improve school attendance in adolescents with borderline and other personality disorders (PD).
  • - Of the 175 juvenile patients studied, 60% were absent from school before treatment, but results showed significant improvements in school attendance post-treatment, highlighting key psychological predictors influencing these changes.
  • - With the upcoming ICD-11 emphasizing functional impairment, the findings suggest earlier assessment and treatment could better address school dysfunction in adolescents with PD, particularly those with borderline and avoidant traits, while future research should explore optimizing treatment for these groups.

Background And Objectives: Biologics that target pathogenic antibodies (Abs) and their effector functions such as the complement inhibitor ravulizumab and the neonatal Fc receptor agonist efgartigimod have recently been approved for the treatment of acetylcholine receptor (AChR)-Ab-positive myasthenia gravis (MG), but comparative studies are lacking.

Methods: In a prospective, exploratory real-world study, we assessed clinical efficacy, safety, and biological effects of ravulizumab and efgartigimod treatment initiation. Myasthenia Gravis-Activities of Daily Living and Quantitative Myasthenia Gravis scores were used as clinical endpoints.

Objective: To identify the COVID-19 pandemic impact on well-being/mental health, coping strategies, and risk factors in adolescents worldwide.

Method: This study was based on an anonymous online multi-national/multi-language survey in the general population (representative/weighted non-representative samples, 14-17 years of age), measuring change in well-being (World Health Organization-Five Well-Being Index [WHO-5]/range = 0-100) and psychopathology (validated composite P-score/range = 0-100), WHO-5 <50 and <29, pre- vs during COVID-19 pandemic (April 26, 2020-June 26, 2022). Coping strategies and 9 a priori- defined individual/cumulative risk factors were measured.

Topological superconductivity is a promising concept for generating fault-tolerant qubits. Early experimental studies looked at hybrid systems and doped intrinsic topological or superconducting materials at very low temperatures. However, higher critical temperatures are indispensable for technological exploitation.

Article Synopsis
  • * The research identified 12 significant genetic markers linked to MG, with certain markers associated specifically with early-onset (under 50) and late-onset (50 and older) forms of the disease.
  • * Additionally, the study highlighted the potential role of genetic factors in determining the age of disease onset and demonstrated that polygenic risk scores could help predict MG status, explaining over 4% of the variation in disease presence.

Article Synopsis
  • * Results showed no deaths, significant discomfort, or severe device malfunctions post-MRI, with only two instances of minor atrial arrhythmia, both in patients with MR-conditional pacemakers.
  • * The findings support that MRI can be safely conducted in patients with CIEDs without adverse effects or changes in device performance, following proper protocols and monitoring.

Establishing a strategy for sequencing of T cell redirecting therapies for relapsed/refractory multiple myeloma (RRMM) is a pressing clinical need. We longitudinally tracked the clinical and immunological impact of bispecific T cell engaging antibodies (BsAb) as bridging therapy (BT) to subsequent BCMA-directed CAR-T cell therapies in 52 RRMM patients. BsAbs were a potent and safe option for BT, achieving the highest overall response rate (100%) to BT compared to chemotherapy, anti-CD38 or anti-SLAMF7 antibody based regimens (46%).

Objective: Internet-based healthcare is a crucial facet of telemedicine. Here, we examine telemedicine methods in perioperative care for gynecological surgery from a patient's perspective. We aim to understand the patients' needs during perioperative gynecological care and suggest how to optimize telemedicine services based on these insights.

Background: Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) were used or are being used in the manufacturing of products, including consumer-use products. The resulting environmental contamination has led to widespread human exposure. This review aimed to scope the characteristics of evidence covered and applied methodology of evidence to understand -- regardless of any results on the association of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and PFAS -- if a new systematic review would be justified.

YeastFab is a Golden Gate-based cloning standard and parts repository. It is designed for modular, hierarchical assembly of transcription units and multi-gene assemblies for expression in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. This makes it a suitable toolbox to optimize the expression strength of heterologous genes in yeast.
