Laparoscopic and open postchemotherapy retroperitoneal lymph node dissection in patients with advanced testicular cancer--a single center analysis.

Background: The open approach represents the gold standard for postchemotherapy retroperitoneal lymph node dissection (O-PCLND) in patients with residual testicular cancer. We analyzed laparoscopic postchemotherapy retroperitoneal lymph node dissection (L-PCLND) and O-PCLND at our institution.

Methods: Patients underwent either L-PCLND (n = 43) or O-PCLND (n = 24).

Adsorption isotherms of cellulose-based polymers onto cotton fibers determined by means of a direct method of fluorescence spectroscopy.

We present a novel method for the measurement of polymer adsorption on fibers by employing fluorescently labeled polymers. The method itself can be used for any compound that either shows fluorescence or can be labeled with a fluorescent dye, which renders it ubiquitously applicable for adsorption studies. The main advantage of the method is that the choice of adsorbent is not limited to flat surfaces, thereby allowing the investigation of fibrous and porous systems.

Canine multifocal retinopathy in the Australian Shepherd: a case report.

A 1-year-old Australian Shepherd (AS) was presented for a routine hereditary eye examination. During the examination multiple raised, brown to orange lesions were noted in the fundus, which could not be attributed to a known retinal disease in this breed. As they clinically most closely resembled canine multifocal retinopathy (cmr) and no indication of an acquired condition was found, genetic tests for BEST1 gene mutations were performed.

Polo-like kinases (Plks) perform crucial functions during mitosis, cytokinesis and centriole duplication. Plk2 is activated in early G1 phase and is involved in the reproduction of centrosomes. However, the mechanisms underlying Plk2-induced centriole duplication are incompletely understood.

Analysis of risk factors for neurological dysfunction in patients with acute aortic dissection type A: data from the German Registry for Acute Aortic Dissection type A (GERAADA).

Objectives: Acute aortic dissection type A (AADA) is associated with major adverse events, such as transient or persistent neurological dysfunction (ND), which may be patient-, disease- or surgery-related. There is a lack of consensus regarding risk factors for ND in AADA patients. The aim of this study was to analyse and identify risk factors for new postoperative ND after aortic repair for AADA.

The power of DNA double-strand break (DSB) repair testing to predict breast cancer susceptibility.

Most presently known breast cancer susceptibility genes have been linked to DSB repair. To identify novel markers that may serve as indicators for breast cancer risk, we performed DSB repair analyses using a case-control design. Thus, we examined 35 women with defined familial history of breast and/or ovarian cancer (first case group), 175 patients with breast cancer (second case group), and 245 healthy women without previous cancer or family history of breast cancer (control group).

Live birth after ovarian tissue autotransplantation following overnight transportation before cryopreservation.

Objective: To describe the first live birth after transplantation of ovarian tissue following overnight transportation of the tissue before freezing.

Akt and p53 are potential mediators of reduced mammary tumor growth by cloroquine and the mTOR inhibitor RAD001.

PI3K/Akt/mTOR and p53 signaling pathways are frequently deregulated in tumors. The anticancer drug RAD001 (everolimus) is a known mTOR-inhibitor, but mTOR-inhibition leads to phosphorylation of Akt inducing resistance against RAD001 treatment. There is growing evidence that conflicting signals transduced by the oncogene Akt and the tumorsuppressor p53 are integrated via negative feedback between the two pathways.

The influence of polymers, surfactants and salt on the fine structure of cotton revealed by SANS.

Cotton is the most abundantly employed material for the production of fabrics. Therefore it is very interesting to know the influence of compounds commonly in contact with cotton during the washing process, on its mesoscopic structure. Small angle neutron scattering (SANS) is able to monitor structural changes in the range of 1 to a few 100 nm, making it a powerful tool to observe such changes.

Influence of operative strategy for the aortic arch in DeBakey type I aortic dissection: analysis of the German Registry for Acute Aortic Dissection Type A.

Objective: Patients treated with an extensive approach including total aortic arch replacement for acute aortic dissection type A may have a favorable long-term prognosis by treating the residual false lumen. Our goal was to analyze the operative strategy for treatment of type I DeBakey aortic dissection from the German Registry for Acute Aortic Dissection Type A (GERAADA) data.

Methods: A total of 658 patients with type I DeBakey aortic dissection and entry only in the ascending aorta were identified in the GERAADA.

Dynamic contrast-enhanced micro-CT on mice with mammary carcinoma for the assessment of antiangiogenic therapy response.

Objective: To evaluate the potential of in vivo dynamic contrast-enhanced micro-computed tomography (DCE micro-CT) for the assessment of antiangiogenic drug therapy response of mice with mammary carcinoma.

Methods: 20 female mice with implanted MCF7 tumours were split into control group and therapy group treated with a known effective antiangiogenic drug. All mice underwent DCE micro-CT for the 3D analysis of functional parameters (relative blood volume [rBV], vascular permeability [K], area under the time-enhancement curve [AUC]) and morphology.

Potentials of qualitative modeling of complex health issues.

Objective: To demonstrate the potentials of nutrition-ecological modeling (NutriMod) for integrative problem solving concerning complex health issues.

Methods: Causes and effects of the example overweight/obesity were depicted in their interrelatedness in a qualitative model within and across the dimensions health, environment, economy, and society.

Results: NutriMod facilitates problem analysis by visualizing the multitude of interrelated factors and promoting awareness to dynamics, multicausality, and multidimensionality.

Metabolic syndrome: an all or none or a continuum load of risk?

Objective: The aim of this study was to determine if an increasing number of traits of metabolic syndrome was associated with an increased severity of each of the traits.

Methods: A cohort of otherwise healthy 387 Latin-American subjects was evaluated for traits of metabolic syndrome according to National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III (NECP ATP III) guidelines. Waist cricumference and triglyceride, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and blood pressure (BP) levels were measured.

Background/aim: Obtaining human embryonic stem cell lines has so far involved destroying the embryos. This has given rise to ethical concerns and is not permitted in most countries. This investigation tested whether removing multiple cells from blastocysts might allow continued embryonic development.

Extracorporeal perfusion of the swine uterus: effect of human seminal plasma.

The active transport of sperm through the female genital tract is a very important factor in the fertilisation process. There is conflicting evidence as to whether seminal plasma has a positive or a negative effect on reproductive performance regarding the sperm transport in the female genital tract. In this study, we investigated if the perfused swine uterus is an appropriate model to study the effect of human seminal plasma on uterine contractility.

[German Registry for Acute Aortic Dissection Type A (GERAADA): initial results].

Background: The working group "Aortic Surgery and Interventional Vascular Surgery" of the German Society for Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery (GSTCVS) set up the German registry for acute aortic dissection type A (GERAADA) in July 2006. This web-based database was developed to record data of patients who had undergone surgery for aortic dissection type A (AADA). The aim of GERAADA is to learn from analyzing the data of AADA patients how to improve the perioperative management and surgical treatment of patients with AADA and to identify possible parameters affecting patient risk and outcome.

Stereoselective oxidation of regioisomeric octadecenoic acids by fatty acid dioxygenases.

Seven Z-octadecenoic acids having the double bond located in positions 6Z to 13Z were photooxidized. The resulting hydroperoxy-E-octadecenoic acids [HpOME(E)] were resolved by chiral phase-HPLC-MS, and the absolute configurations of the enantiomers were determined by gas chromatographic analysis of diastereoisomeric derivatives. The MS/MS/MS spectra showed characteristic fragments, which were influenced by the distance between the hydroperoxide and carboxyl groups.

Myometrial response to neurotropic and musculotropic spasmolytic drugs in an extracorporeal perfusion model of swine uteri.

To compare the effects of neurotropic and musculotropic spasmolytic drugs in isolated swine uterus specimens, 80 swine uteri were perfused using an established model for preserving a viable organ that responds to oxytocic hormones and spasmolytic drugs. An intrauterine catheter was used to record pressure changes. Following initiation of rhythmic uterine contractions and recording of spontaneous rhythmic contractions, spasmolytic drugs (butylscopolamine, atropine, denaverine, morphine, metamizole, pethidine and celandine) were administered at various concentrations.

The SCF-FBXW5 E3-ubiquitin ligase is regulated by PLK4 and targets HsSAS-6 to control centrosome duplication.

Deregulated centrosome duplication can result in genetic instability and contribute to tumorigenesis. Here, we show that centrosome duplication is regulated by the activity of an E3-ubiquitin ligase that employs the F-box protein FBXW5 (ref. 3) as its targeting subunit.

Thyroid hormone receptors and reproduction.

Thyroid disorders have a great impact on fertility in both sexes. Hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism cause changes in sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG), prolactin, gonadotropin-releasing hormone, and sex steroid serum levels. In females, thyroid hormones may also have a direct effect on oocytes, because it is known that specific binding sites for thyroxin are found on mouse and human oocytes.

Xenotransplantation of cryopreserved ovarian tissue from patients with ovarian tumors into SCID mice--no evidence of malignant cell contamination.

This study examined the possible presence of malignant cells in ovarian cortex from patients with ovarian tumors after xenografting of the ovarian tissue into severe combined immunodeficiency mice. None of the mice presented symptoms of reintroduced malignancy nor did microscopic and immunohistochemical evaluation of the grafts raise any suspicion of residual malignant disease.
