E-cigarette use continues to increase globally despite uncertainty regarding their long-term health impacts and around their effectiveness for tobacco smoking cessation. This uncertainty creates unique challenges for governments as they attempt to optimally regulate and positively or negatively incentivize these products in a way that maximizes the public's health. Current approaches to e-cigarette regulation and incentivization fall within a spectrum of options ranging from a singular focus on health protection, whereby policies intend to prevent the dangers of e-cigarettes, to a singular focus on using e-cigarettes for harm reduction, whereby policies intend to reduce the more harmful effects of smoking tobacco.

Evaluation of WGS performance for bacterial pathogen characterization with the Illumina technology optimized for time-critical situations.

Whole genome sequencing (WGS) has become the reference standard for bacterial outbreak investigation and pathogen typing, providing a resolution unattainable with conventional molecular methods. Data generated with Illumina sequencers can however only be analysed after the sequencing run has finished, thereby losing valuable time during emergency situations. We evaluated both the effect of decreasing overall run time, and also a protocol to transfer and convert intermediary files generated by Illumina sequencers enabling real-time data analysis for multiple samples part of the same ongoing sequencing run, as soon as the forward reads have been sequenced.

An efficient single-cell based method for linking human T cell phenotype to T cell receptor sequence and specificity.

Single-cell antigen-receptor gene amplification and sequencing platforms have been used to characterize T cell receptor (TCR) repertoires but typically fail to generate paired full-length gene products for direct expression cloning and do not enable linking this data to cell phenotype information. To overcome these limitations, we established a high-throughput platform for the quantitative and qualitative analysis of human TCR repertoires that provides insights into the clonal and functional composition of human CD4 and CD8 αβ T cells at the molecular and cellular level. Standardized dyadic assessments intended to elicit social affiliation between unacquainted partners are used to elucidate mechanisms that disrupt relationship formation and inform possible treatment targets; however, the psychometric properties of such paradigms remain poorly understood. This study evaluated the psychometric properties of a controlled social affiliation paradigm intended to induce connectedness between a target participant and trained confederate.

Association of venous thromboembolism following pediatric traumatic spinal injuries with injury severity and longer hospital stays.

Objective: Venous thromboembolism (VTE) can cause significant morbidity and mortality in hospitalized patients, and may disproportionately occur in patients with limited mobility following spinal trauma. The authors aimed to characterize the epidemiology and clinical predictors of VTE in pediatric patients following traumatic spinal injuries (TSIs).

Methods: The authors conducted a retrospective cohort analysis of children who experienced TSI, including spinal fractures and spinal cord injuries, encoded within the National Trauma Data Bank from 2011 to 2014.

Psychological well-being and alcohol misuse among community-based veterans: results from the Veterans' Health Study.

Background: Maladaptive drinking is an increasing concern among military policy makers and healthcare providers. The goal of this study was to assess how social and psychological factors relate to alcohol problems among post-deployed US veterans and how problematic drinking is associated with well-being.

Methods: Data were collected via a telephone survey from a random sample of veterans receiving their healthcare from a large non-VA hospital system in central Pennsylvania (N = 1730).

Health History Skills for Interprofessional Learners in Transgender and Nonbinary Populations.

Introduction: Transgender and nonbinary peoplehave been identified as vulnerable and clinically underserved and experience health disparities. Lack of health care provider knowledge about transgender and gender diverse populations is a barrier to care, impacting health outcomes. The aim of this project was to develop, implement, and evaluate a simulation learning activity for midwifery and women's health nurse practitioner students and obstetrics and gynecology residents to interact with transgender and nonbinary individuals, with the goal of enhancing health history taking comfort and skills.

The ECLiPSE Procedure as an Alternative to Mastopexy following Implant Removal.

Unlabelled: With the rise in number of breast implant removals for a variety of indications, strategies to improve aesthetic outcomes, while minimizing scars and operating time, will prove to be of benefit. We present here a novel periareolar sickle skin excision as a good option for women with mild to moderate ptosis and central loss of breast volume following implant removal/capsulectomy.

Methods: The ECLiPSE (xplant, apsulectomy, ft using eriareolar ickle skin xcision) was utilized in 53 patients with a median follow-up of 24 weeks.

Under the spotlight: understanding the role of the Chief Medical Officer in a pandemic.

As the COVID-19 pandemic took hold in 2020, Chief Medical Officers (CMOs) entered the public spotlight like never before. Amidst this increased visibility, the role is deeply contested. Much of the disagreement concerns whether CMOs should act independently of the government: while some argue CMOs should act as independent voices who work to shape government policy to protect public health, others stress that CMOs are civil servants whose job is to support the government.

Narratives as Borders: Using an Adapted Narrative Approach to Understand the Retelling of the Physical Narratives of Trauma by Karen Women With Refugee Status Resettled in the United States.

The refugee narrative spans time, geography, and generations, enfolding the complexity of constructing identities through displacement and migration. Through adapted narrative analysis, we examined the physical narratives of war trauma which a sample of Karen refugee women constructed, as they claimed their experiences of war trauma and torture in interview discussions. We employed an adapted narrative method relevant to the analysis of field texts to interpret the remembering and retelling of trauma narratives.

Optogenetic Control of Microbial Consortia Populations for Chemical Production.

Microbial co-culture fermentations can improve chemical production from complex biosynthetic pathways over monocultures by distributing enzymes across multiple strains, thereby reducing metabolic burden, overcoming endogenous regulatory mechanisms, or exploiting natural traits of different microbial species. However, stabilizing and optimizing microbial subpopulations for maximal chemical production remains a major obstacle in the field. In this study, we demonstrate that optogenetics is an effective strategy to dynamically control populations in microbial co-cultures.

Three-dimensional Navigation-guided, Prone, Single-position, Lateral Lumbar Interbody Fusion Technique.

Lateral interbody fusion provides a significant biomechanical advantage over the traditional transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion due to the large implant size and optimal implant position. However, current methods for lateral interbody cage placement require either a two-staged procedure or a single lateral decubitus position that precludes surgeons from having either full access to the posterior spine for direct decompression or comfortable pedicle screw placement. Herein is one institution's experience with 10 cases of a prone single-position approach for simultaneous access to the anterior and posterior lumbar spine.

Advancing Antiracism in Community-Based Research Practices in Early Childhood and Family Mental Health.

Structural racism-the ways that institutional policies, practices, and other norms operate to create and sustain race-based inequities-has historically been foundational to the operations of academic medical centers and research institutions. Since its inception, academic medicine has depended on the exploitation of vulnerable communities to achieve medical, educational, and research goals. Research practices have long ignored or taken advantage of the individuals purportedly benefiting from the research, a dynamic most manifestly true for Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) communities in the United States.

Scoping Review of Postinfectious Sequelae.

Previous economic estimates of infection with and chronic sequelae following infection lack sufficient data to establish the true burden of disease and its chronic sequelae. This scoping review aims to fill this gap by updating existing literature regarding the development of postinfectious sequelae following infection. Literature published between January 1, 2000, and November 6, 2018, in PubMed, EMBASE, and Scopus was searched for a wide range of postinfectious sequelae and economic estimate terms.

Incidence of Plasmodium falciparum malaria infection in 6-month to 45-year-olds on selected areas of Bioko Island, Equatorial Guinea.

Background: Extensive malaria control measures have been implemented on Bioko Island, Equatorial Guinea over the past 16 years, reducing parasite prevalence and malaria-related morbidity and mortality, but without achieving elimination. Malaria vaccines offer hope for reducing the burden to zero. Three phase 1/2 studies have been conducted successfully on Bioko Island to evaluate the safety and efficacy of whole Plasmodium falciparum (Pf) sporozoite (SPZ) malaria vaccines.

Cellulosic biofuel production using emulsified simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (eSSF) with conventional and thermotolerant yeasts.

Background: Future expansion of corn-derived ethanol raises concerns of sustainability and competition with the food industry. Therefore, cellulosic biofuels derived from agricultural waste and dedicated energy crops are necessary. To date, slow and incomplete saccharification as well as high enzyme costs have hindered the economic viability of cellulosic biofuels, and while approaches like simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (SSF) and the use of thermotolerant microorganisms can enhance production, further improvements are needed.

Background: Vaccination with radiation-attenuated Plasmodium falciparum sporozoites is known to induce protective immunity. However, the mechanisms underlying this protection remain unclear. In this work, two recent radiation-attenuated sporozoite vaccination studies were used to identify potential transcriptional correlates of vaccination-induced protection.

The Current Landscape of Oncolytic Herpes Simplex Viruses as Novel Therapies for Brain Malignancies.

Despite advances in surgical resection and chemoradiation, high-grade brain tumors continue to be associated with significant morbidity/mortality. Novel therapeutic strategies and approaches are, therefore, desperately needed for patients and their families. Given the success experienced in treating multiple other forms of cancer, immunotherapy and, in particular, immunovirotherapy are at the forefront amongst novel therapeutic strategies that are currently under investigation for incurable brain tumors.
