Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related death worldwide. Here we demonstrate that elevated expression of dopamine and cyclic adenosine monophosphate-regulated phosphoprotein, Mr 32000 (DARPP-32) and its truncated splice variant t-DARPP promote lung tumor growth, while abrogation of DARPP-32 expression in human non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) cells reduces tumor growth in orthotopic mouse models. We observe a novel physical interaction between DARPP-32 and inhibitory kappa B kinase-α (IKKα) that promotes NSCLC cell migration through non-canonical nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells 2 (NF-κB2) signaling.

Background And Purpose: It is well-established that a high prevalence of infants with congenital heart defects surviving to childhood have neurodevelopmental abnormalities. The etiology is not clear. In this study, we aimed to find prenatal neuroanatomic changes in fetuses with congenital heart disease to better understand the pathophysiology behind these sequelae.

DPP6 Loss Impacts Hippocampal Synaptic Development and Induces Behavioral Impairments in Recognition, Learning and Memory.

DPP6 is well known as an auxiliary subunit of Kv4-containing, A-type K channels which regulate dendritic excitability in hippocampal CA1 pyramidal neurons. We have recently reported, however, a novel role for DPP6 in regulating dendritic filopodia formation and stability, affecting synaptic development and function. These results are notable considering recent clinical findings associating DPP6 with neurodevelopmental and intellectual disorders.

Evidence of exposure of domestic pigs to Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza H5N1 in Nigeria.

Avian influenza viruses (AIV) potentially transmit to swine as shown by experiments, where further reassortment may contribute to the generation of pandemic strains. Associated risks of AIV inter-species transmission are greater in countries like Nigeria with recurrent epidemics of highly pathogenic AI (HPAI) in poultry and significant pig population. Analysis of 129 tracheal swab specimens collected from apparently healthy pigs at slaughterhouse during presence of HPAI virus H5N1 in poultry in Nigeria for influenza A by RT-qPCR yielded 43 positive samples.

Neurodevelopmental outcome of fetal isolated ventricular asymmetry without dilation: a cohort study.

Objective: Fetal isolated ventricular asymmetry (IVA) is a relatively common finding in pregnancy, but data regarding its effect on neurodevelopmental outcome are scarce and founded principally on ultrasound-based studies. The purpose of this study was to assess the neurodevelopmental outcome of IVA cases in a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-based study.

Methods: Cases referred for fetal brain MRI as part of the assessment of IVA without ventriculomegaly (lateral ventricular atrial diameter ≤ 10 mm), identified during routine ultrasound examination, were assessed for possible inclusion.

Accelerating drug development in pediatric cancer: a novel Phase I study design of venetoclax in relapsed/refractory malignancies.

Venetoclax is a highly selective, potent BCL-2 inhibitor that is approved for some patients previously treated for chronic lymphocytic leukemia, and has shown promising activity in adult studies across several hematologic malignancies. Preclinical studies have demonstrated venetoclax activity in pediatric patient-derived xenograft models and cell lines; however, clinical studies in pediatric patients have yet to be conducted. The prognosis is poor for children with most relapsed/refractory malignancies, and limited treatment options result in unmet clinical need.

Methods: Job postings for either "abdominal" or "body" radiologists were searched weekly on five society websites (SAR, SCBT-MR, ARRS, ACR, RSNA) over a 1-year period. Postings were reviewed for various characteristics.

The time-resolved femtosecond stimulated Raman spectra (FSRS) of a charge transfer (CT) excited noncovalent complex tetracyanoethylene:1-chloronaphthalene (TCNE:ClN) in dichloromethane (DCM) is reported with 40 fs time resolution. In the frequency domain, five FSRS peaks are observed with frequencies of 534, 858, 1069, 1392, and 1926 cm. The most intense peaks at 534 and 1392 cm correspond to fundamentals while the features at 858, 1069, and 1926 cm are attributed to a difference frequency, an overtone and a combination frequency of the fundamentals, respectively.

Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and arachidonic acid (ARA) are present in breast milk and play important roles in early infant development. A supply of these fatty acids in infant formula (typically following breast milk as a model with ARA > DHA) is thought to be important since endogenous synthesis is insufficient to maintain tissue levels equivalent to breast-fed infants. Intervention studies assessing the impact of DHA- and ARA-supplemented formulas have resulted in numerous positive developmental outcomes (closer to breast-fed infants) including measures of specific cognition functions, visual acuity, and immune responses.

FRMPD4 (FERM and PDZ Domain Containing 4) is a neural scaffolding protein that interacts with PSD-95 to positively regulate dendritic spine morphogenesis, and with mGluR1/5 and Homer to regulate mGluR1/5 signaling. We report the genetic and functional characterization of 4 FRMPD4 deleterious mutations that cause a new X-linked intellectual disability (ID) syndrome. These mutations were found to be associated with ID in ten affected male patients from four unrelated families, following an apparent X-linked mode of inheritance.

Epidemiologic and clinical research has provided a large body of evidence supporting the developmental origins of health and disease (DOHaD), but there has been a relative dearth of mechanistic studies in humans due to the complexity of working with large, longitudinal cohorts. Nonetheless, animal models of undernutrition have provided substantial evidence for the potential epigenetic, metabolic, and endocrine mechanisms behind DOHaD. Furthermore, recent research has explored the interaction between the environment and the gastrointestinal system by investigating how the gut microbial ecology may impact the capacity for nutrient processing and absorption in a manner that may limit growth.
