Neuroendocrine neoplasms (NENs) arise from neuroendocrine cells in a wide variety of organs. One of the most affected disease sites is the gastrointestinal system, which originates the gastro-entero-pancreatic NENs (GEP-NENs), a heterogenous group of malignancies that are rapidly increasing in incidence. These tumors can be functioning, with secretory activity leading to identifiable clinical syndromes, or non-functioning, with no secretory activity but with local symptoms of tumor growth and metastasis.

Background: Differences in tracer characteristics may influence the interpretation of positron emission tomography myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI). We compare the reading of MPIs with a low-extraction retention tracer (Rb) and a high-extraction non-retention tracer (O-water) in a selected cohort of patients with known coronary artery disease (CAD).

Methods: Thirty-nine patients with known CAD referred to Rb MPI due to angina underwent rest and stress imaging with both tracers and experienced MPI readers provided blinded consensus reads of all studies.

Objectives: There is minimal research eliciting teen reproductive desires and parenting attitudes. Behavioral, educational, and public health interventions to prevent teen pregnancy often highlight the negative consequences of teen pregnancy or benefits of delaying parenting. However, limited empirical information is available regarding what factors teens perceive to influence the desire to delay pregnancy.

The development of consumer sleep-tracking technologies has outpaced the scientific evaluation of their accuracy. In this study, five consumer sleep-tracking devices, research-grade actigraphy, and polysomnography were used simultaneously to monitor the overnight sleep of fifty-three young adults in the lab for one night. Biases and limits of agreement were assessed to determine how sleep stage estimates for each device and research-grade actigraphy differed from polysomnography-derived measures.

Article Synopsis
  • B7-H4 (VTCN1) is a protein that is highly expressed in various cancers, and this study focuses on its expression in salivary gland carcinomas (SGC) to evaluate its role as a potential prognostic marker.
  • The analysis of 340 tumors showed that B7-H4 expression was particularly prevalent in adenoid cystic carcinomas (ACC) and correlated with specific clinical characteristics, indicating its potential to help predict patient outcomes, especially in ACC cases.
  • However, high B7-H4 expression was not found to be prognostic in non-ACC salivary gland tumors, suggesting that its therapeutic implications may be more relevant for certain types, particularly solid ACC.

The synthesis and structures of nitrile complexes of V(N[Bu]Ar), (Ar = 3,5-MeCH), are described. Thermochemical and kinetic data for their formation were determined by variable temperature Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), calorimetry, and stopped-flow techniques. The extent of back-bonding from metal to coordinated nitrile indicates that electron donation from the metal to the nitrile plays a less prominent role for than for the related complex Mo(N[Bu]Ar), .

The liver is the world's sixth most common primary tumor site, responsible for approximately 5% of all cancers and over 8% of cancer-related deaths. Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the predominant type of liver cancer, accounting for approximately 75% of all primary liver tumors. A major therapeutic tool for this disease is liver transplantation.

In 2022, approximately 600,000 cancer deaths were expected; more than 50,000 of those deaths would be from colorectal cancer (CRC). The CRC mortality rate in the US has decreased in recent decades, with a 51% drop between 1976 and 2014. This drop is attributed, in part, to the tremendous therapeutic improvements, especially after the 2000s, in addition to increased social awareness regarding risk factors and diagnostic improvement.

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) bearing biomolecules from parental cells can represent a novel source of disease biomarkers and are under intensive study for their clinical potential. Tunable resistive pulse sensing (TRPS) quantifies the magnitude of a small ionic resistive pulse current to determine the size, concentration, and zeta potential of EVs. Environmental noise is a common limiting factor that affects the precision of sensing devices.

Background: Intestinal resection causes inevitable vascular damage, which cannot always be seen during an intraoperative clinical assessment of local intestinal perfusion. If left unaltered, impaired perfusion can lead to complications, such as anastomotic leakage (AL). Therefore, we demonstrate the use of a novel laparoscopic laser speckle contrast imaging (LSCI)-based approach in order to assess local intestinal perfusion during the construction of intestinal anastomoses.
