Background: The pivot-shift test has become more consistent and reliable and is a meaningful outcome measurement after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR).

Purpose/hypothesis: The purpose of this investigation was to assess patient-reported outcomes (PROs) and the quantitative pivot shift (QPS) preoperatively, at time zero immediately after anatomic ACLR, and after 24 months as well as the relationship between PROs and the QPS. It was hypothesized that anatomic ACLR would restore rotatory stability measured by the pivot-shift test and that QPS measurements would be positively correlated with PROs.

Background: It is still uncertain how surgical reconstruction of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is able to restore rotatory laxity of the involved joint. The desired amount of restraint applied by the ACL graft, as compared with the healthy knee, has not been fully clarified.

Purpose: To quantify the ability of single-bundle anatomic ACL reconstruction using hamstring tendons in reducing the pivot-shift phenomenon immediately after surgery under anesthesia.

Objective: Health-related quality of life (HRQL) is increasingly used to estimate needs for medical treatment, to evaluate its outcome and quality of care. The aim of this study was to compare the HRQL of several diagnostic groups before and after treatment with the HL-test (HL = IQL, Icelandic Quality of Life test) and to study its validity for measuring changes in quality of life.

Material And Methods: Patients on waiting lists for coronary catheterization, orthopedic or urologic operations, patients in psychiatric out-patient treatment and patients entering treatment for alcohol dependence were asked to fill in the HL-test, a total of 1195 patients.

Objective: To study health-related quality of life (HRQL) among adults in Iceland with a generic Icelandic instrument, IQL (Icelandic Quality of Life), if it is the same among men and women, and if it changes by increasing age. Furthermore, it was intended to find norms for men and women in different age groups in order to evaluate patients' deviation in HRQL.

Material And Methods: IQL was sent to 2800 individuals, a random sample from the national registry, stratified by sex in 10 years age groups from 20-79 years and those above 80 years.

Objective: The prevalence of diseases increases with age and so does use of medications. Thus illness related to medications use does also become more prevalent. This study aims at evaluating medications of elderly people admitted to an acute care hospital, and demonstrate adverse reactions and quality indicators.

The following case report is of the cardiac arrest of a 63 year old male on board a transatlantic passenger aircraft. Medical doctors on board the aircraft used an automated external defibrillator (AED) which restored the patient circulation. On arrival at the hospital in Iceland two hours later he was unconscious and had EKG signs of an antero-septal myocardial infarction.

Objective: This study compares self reported measures of sleep quality between groups of patients undergoing ambulatory or in-hospital annual control of Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) therapy.

Methods: 70 consecutive Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSAS) patients scheduled for an annual control of CPAP therapy were randomly assigned to either ambulatory or in the hospital conditions. The same recording equipment was used in both conditions.

Diseases that cause progressive obstruction of the larger airways are commonly encountered in pulmonary medicine. Even slight narrowing of the larger airways can cause intense symptoms and sometimes be life-threatening. In recent years progress has been made in endobronchial intervention procedures.

A 47 year old male was admitted to the pulmonary medicine department in Landspítali University Hospital following a three day episode of massive hemoptysis but prior to admission he had been suffering from a dry cough for several weeks. Neither bronchoscopy nor a CT scan revealed the cause of bleeding and he was treated for bronchitis. Subsequently the bleeding stopped and he was discharged on Friday for a follow-up bronchoscopy to be performed three days later but only for that study to reveal continued bleeding and he was therefore readmitted.
