ABTS's four stages involve automatic histogram multi-thresholding and morphological operations including geodesic dilation. Our empirical results, on 16 real tumors, show that ABTS works very effectively, achieving a Dice accuracy compared to expert segmentation of 81% in segmenting edema and 85% in segmenting gross tumor volume (GTV).

To discover novel genes frequently methylated at an early stage in colorectal cancer (CRC), DNA microarray analysis coupled with enriched methylated DNA was performed in primary tumors and compared with adjacent nontumor tissues of 12 patients with CRC at stages I to IV. Stepwise filtering for candidate selection in microarray data analysis yielded a set of genes that are highly methylated across all CRC tumors and that can be used as a composite biomarker for CRC detection.

Background And Purpose: Newborn cells may participate in repair following ischemic brain injury, but their survival and function may be influenced by inflammation.
Methods: We investigated the effects of indomethacin, a nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drug, on the fate of newborn cells following transient focal ischemia.
Results: Bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU)-labeled cells, including migrating neuroblasts, were observed in the neighboring striatum and overlying cortex 1 day poststroke.

Here we test whether overexpression with the use of gene therapy of the antioxidant glutathione peroxidase (Gpx), delivered before or after experimental stroke, is protective against ischemic injury.
Methods: Sixty-two rats underwent middle cerebral artery occlusion for 1 hour.
Chronic alcohol consumption may lead to primary and secondary malnutrition. In particular, protein energy malnutrition not only aggravates alcoholic liver disease but also correlates with impaired liver function and increased mortality. Therefore, in these patients, adequate nutritional support should be implemented in order to improve their prognosis.

We measured mRNA levels of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and its Flk-1/KDR receptor in isolated cerebral cortical microvessels and in the cerebral cortex of neonatal (1 week) and adult (11 week) rats using reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Cerebral microvessels were isolated by density centrifugation, mesh filtration and passage through glass bead columns. The dominant cell types in this preparation are endothelial cells and pericytes.
