Background And Objectives: Nonmedical use of prescription tranquilizers/sedatives (NMUPTS) is associated with a 15-times increased likelihood of polysubstance use (PSU). This is correlated with an increased risk for use disorders and death, therefore, to inform prevention efforts, we identified PSU profiles among adults reporting sleep-related NMUPTS.

Methods: National Survey on Drug Use and Health 2015-2019 participants with past 12-month sleep-related NMUPTS and use of an additional drug(s) (n = 2603) were studied.

These rates are expected to increase due to increased life expectancy among this population coupled with higher rates of substance use. However, they have consistently lower screening rates for problematic prescription pain reliever use, compared to younger cohorts.

Purpose Of Review: The coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic resulted in cataclysmic changes to the research enterprise, causing a forced shutdown or rapid pivot to virtual methods. Adapting studies to the virtual environment also impacted recruitment and retention strategies. This review elucidated challenges and offered pragmatic recommendations, drawing on published literature and our prior work, to assist researchers in re-evaluating and amending best-practice techniques to bolster inclusive recruitment and study engagement of people using substances, particularly for virtual interviews or focus groups.

Background: Individuals with mental health issues experience profound stigma and discrimination, which may contribute to a lack of accommodation utilization to address functional limitations of their work.

Objectives: This study examined how psychosocial factors may predict the request of accommodations by employed individuals with mental disabilities through the framework of social cognitive career theory.

Methods: In the United States, 148 employed adults with mental disabilities completed an online questionnaire to ascertain self-efficacy, outcome expectation, affect, and workplace support.

Health Effects Associated With Kratom () and Polysubstance Use: A Narrative Review.

Background: Kratom () consumption and associated health effects have raised debates in the United States. Although most people using this herb do not experience adverse health effects associated with kratom use, medical providers should be knowledgeable of emerging substances and concurrent, sequential, or simultaneous use of other drugs which may impact healthcare recommendations and prescribing practices.

Methods: The objective of this narrative review was to elucidate selected health effects associated with using kratom-either alone or with other substances.

Multimorbidity constitutes a challenge to the healthcare system, and treatment of patients with multimorbidity is prone to high-quality variations. Currently, no set of quality indicators (QIs) exists to assess quality of care, let alone incorporating the patient perspective.

Converging public health crises: substance use during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic.

Purpose Of Review: The international, public health crisis caused by the rapid spread of SARS-CoV-2 has resulted in unforeseen medical and psychiatric consequences. We reviewed publications from January 2020 to January 2021, given that earlier documents were not relevant, to review findings on changes in substance use and overdoses during the pandemic. Additionally, this review of the literature also documents advocacy efforts, health service modification and challenges, as well as COVID-related health complications associated with substance use.

Deficiency of IL-22 contributes to a chronic inflammatory disease: pathogenetic mechanisms in acne inversa.

Overexpression of the T cell cytokine IL-22 is linked to the development of some chronic diseases, but little is known about IL-22 deficiency in humans. As demonstrated in this study, acne inversa (AI; also designated as Hidradenitis suppurativa) lesions show a relative deficiency of IL-22 and IL-20, but not of IL-17A, IL-26, IFN-γ, IL-24, or IL-1β. Moreover, AI lesions had reduced expression of membranous IL-22 and IL-20 receptors and increased expression of the natural IL-22 inhibitor, IL-22 binding protein.

Treatment of cytomegalovirus disease with valganciclovir in renal transplant recipients: a single center experience.

Recent data suggest valganciclovir (VGC) to be as effective as ganciclovir for cytomegalovirus (CMV) prophylaxis. The objective of this study was to analyze the effect of oral valganciclovir in renal transplant patients with symptomatic CMV infection. Twenty-one patients with symptomatic CMV infection received VGC in doses adjusted to renal function until resolution of CMV antigenemia.

As thoracic epidural block (TEB) should blunt the perioperative increases in cortisol and catecholamines we investigated whether IL-10 secretion is influenced by TEB.

Standardized immune monitoring for the prediction of infections after cardiopulmonary bypass surgery in risk patients.

Background: Infections are the most common cause of late complications in cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) surgery patients, and are difficult to predict.
