Lumbar disc herniation (LDH) is a common degenerative condition causing low back pain (LBP) due to nerve compression. This work describes highly enantioselective nitrene transfer to hydrocinnamyl alcohols (benzylic C-H amination) and allylic alcohols (aziridination) using ion-paired Rh (II,II) complexes based on anionic variants of Du Bois' esp ligand that are associated with cinchona alkaloid-derived chiral cations. Directed by a substrate hydroxyl group, our previous work with these complexes had not been able to achieve high enantioselectivity on these most useful short-chain compounds, and we overcame this challenge through a combination of catalyst design and modified conditions. A hypothesis that modulation of the linker between the anionic sulfonate group and the central arene spacer might provide a better fit for shorter chain length substrates led to the development of a new biaryl-containing scaffold, which has allowed a broad scope for both substrate classes to be realized for the first time.

The advent of large language models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT has potential implications for psychological therapies such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). We systematically investigated whether LLMs could recognize an unhelpful thought, examine its validity, and reframe it to a more helpful one. LLMs currently have the potential to offer reasonable suggestions for the identification and reframing of unhelpful thoughts but should not be relied on to lead CBT delivery.

Collagen fibrils are the primary supporting scaffold of vertebrate tissues but how they are assembled is unclear. Here, using CRISPR-tagging of type I collagen and SILAC labelling, we elucidate the cellular mechanism for the spatiotemporal assembly of collagen fibrils, in cultured fibroblasts. Our findings reveal multifaceted trafficking of collagen, including constitutive secretion, intracellular pooling, and plasma membrane-directed fibrillogenesis.

Background: The purpose of this study is to compare outcomes of carpal tunnel release (CTR) in patients with and without double crush syndrome (DCS), defined as concurrent carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) and cervical radiculopathy at C5-T1 on preoperative nerve conduction studies.

Methods: Patients with preoperative nerve conduction studies who underwent unilateral, isolated CTR were retrospectively identified.
