Background: , a green microalga, is a rich source of natural astaxanthin and a potent antioxidant with high commercial value. This study investigates the biological characteristics and potential of HB isolated from Hoa Binh, Vietnam, for growth and astaxanthin accumulation using a two-phase culture method.
Methods: HB was cultured in a C/RM medium at 25 °C, and morphological characteristics were examined.
Astaxanthin and kaempferol, renowned natural compounds, possess potent antioxidant properties and exhibit remarkable biological activities. However, their poor water solubility, low stability, and limited bioavailability are the primary bottlenecks that restrict their utilization in pharmaceuticals and functional foods. To overcome these drawbacks, this study aims to fabricate astaxanthin/kaempferol co-encapsulated nanoparticles and investigate their synergistic effects on reducing the risk of stress oxidation, chronic inflammation, and lipid accumulation in RAW264.

In this study, the ability of fucoxanthin to inhibit acetylcholinesterase (AChE), the antioxidant activities, and the expression of antioxidant enzymes were investigated. Fucoxanthin isolated from Vietnamese showed no cytotoxic effects; moreover, it exhibited AChE inhibitory activity (with an IC value of 130.

Results: To examine the effect of squalene on liver X receptors (LXRs) that regulate target genes associated with reverse cholesterol transport and thus control whole-body cholesterol homeostasis. Squalene significantly stimulated the transactivation of liver X receptor modulator LXRα and LXRβ.
Objective: Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-alpha (PPARα) is a nuclear receptor that has critical roles in the treatment of atherosclerosis, hyperlipidemia and hepatic steatosis.
Results: Squalene is a novel nature PPARα agonist, identified from reporter gene assay and qPCR analysis. Cultured hepatocytes stimulated with squalene exhibited significantly decreased cellular triacylglycerols and cholesterol concentrations, while cellular uptake of fatty acids was increased.
