Background: Controversy remains regarding the adequacy of the lymph node evaluation achieved by video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) lobectomy for lung cancer. This study compared the completeness of the lymph node dissection or sampling for patients undergoing lobectomy by open thoracotomy vs VATS for clinical N0 lung cancer.

Methods: This study was a retrospective review of 129 patients who underwent lobectomy for clinical N0 lung carcinoma from December 2008 to January 2012.

Background: We investigated microRNA expression profiles of malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) specimens to identify novel microRNA that are potentially involved in the oncogenic transformation of human pleural cells.

Methods: microRNA microarray transcriptional profiling studies of 25 MPM primary tumors were performed. We used normal pleural tissue from an unmatched patient cohort as normal comparators.

Background: Invasive lung adenocarcinomas increasingly present with synchronous, multifocal, in situ lesions that appear as ground glass opacities (GGOs). The optimal approach in this circumstance (often nonsmokers) remains unclear. We evaluated a general strategy of anatomic resection of the dominant tumor (DT) and wedge resection of accessible ipsilateral GGOs.

The lineage-specific basic helix-loop-helix transcription factor Ptf1a is a critical driver for development of both the pancreas and nervous system. How one transcription factor controls diverse programs of gene expression is a fundamental question in developmental biology. To uncover molecular strategies for the program-specific functions of Ptf1a, we identified bound genomic regions in vivo during development of both tissues.

Correlates of cognitive impairment in older Vietnamese.

Objectives: This study examined correlates of cognitive functioning and possible cognitive impairment among older adults living in Da Nang, Vietnam and surrounding rural areas.

Methods: The analytic sample consisted of 489 adults, 55 and older stratified by gender, age, and residence in a rural or urban area. The sample was 46% rural, 44% women, with a mean age of 69.

Mesostoma ehrenbergii spermatocytes--a unique and advantageous cell for studying meiosis.

Mesostoma ehrenbergii have a unique male meiosis: their spermatocytes have three large bivalents that oscillate for 1-2 h before entering into anaphase without having formed a metaphase plate, have a precocious ('pre-anaphase') cleavage furrow, and have four univalents that segregate between spindle poles without physical interaction between them, that is via 'distance segregation'. These unique and unconventional features make Mesostoma spermatocytes an ideal organism for studying the force produced by the spindle to move chromosomes, and to study cleavage furrow control and 'distance segregation'. We review the literature on meiosis in Mesostoma spermatocytes and describe our current research with Mesostoma spermatocytes, rearing the animals in the laboratory using methods that described in our companion article [Hoang et al.

Methods for rearing Mesostoma ehrenbergii in the laboratory for cell biology experiments, including identification of factors that influence production of different egg types.

Mesostoma ehrenbergii spermatocytes are uniquely useful to study various aspects of cell division. Their chromosomes are large in size and few in number, with only three bivalent and four univalent chromosomes. During prometaphase, bipolar bivalents oscillate regularly to and from the poles for 1-2 hours.

Study of boron-nitrogen dative bonds using azetidine inversion dynamics.

A method for probing the strength of B-N dative bonds is reported. The activation parameters for nitrogen inversion in a series of azetidines tethered to boronate esters have been quantified by VT-NMR and the measured barriers correlated with data obtained by (11)B NMR, X-ray crystallography and MP2 calculations.

Monitoring the presence of ionic mercury in environmental water by plasmon-enhanced infrared spectroscopy.

We demonstrate the ppt-level single-step selective monitoring of the presence of mercury ions (Hg²⁺) dissolved in environmental water by plasmon-enhanced vibrational spectroscopy. We combined a nanogap-optimized mid-infrared plasmonic structure with mercury-binding DNA aptamers to monitor in-situ the spectral evolution of the vibrational signal of the DNA induced by the mercury binding. Here, we adopted single-stranded thiolated 15-base DNA oligonucleotides that are immobilized on the Au surface and show strong specificity to Hg²⁺.

Prevalence of HIV/STIs and associated factors among men who have sex with men in An Giang, Vietnam.

Background: The prevalence of HIV and sexually transmitted infections among men who have sex with men (MSM) has increased substantially in Vietnam. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of HIV, syphilis, urethral gonorrhoea, and urethral chlamydia, and determined correlates of HIV infection among MSM in An Giang, Vietnam.

Methods: A group of 381 MSM were recruited in a community-based cross-sectional survey between August and December 2009.

Physical factors associated with fatigue after stroke: an exploratory study.

Objective: To look for a relationship between physical fatigue and physical parameters in patients at least 3 months post stroke.

Methods: We conducted a prospective cross-sectional study of 32 poststroke patients (average duration of stroke 40 months) who were recruited among in- and outpatients followed by the Department of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine of a university hospital. Fatigue was defined as a Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS) score of 4 or more.

Cross-species functional analysis of cancer-associated fibroblasts identifies a critical role for CLCF1 and IL-6 in non-small cell lung cancer in vivo.

Cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAF) have been reported to support tumor progression by a variety of mechanisms. However, their role in the progression of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) remains poorly defined. In addition, the extent to which specific proteins secreted by CAFs contribute directly to tumor growth is unclear.

Adrenocortical tumors: improving the practice of the Weiss system through virtual microscopy: a National Program of the French Network INCa-COMETE.

The Weiss score is the reference method to distinguish between a benign and a malignant adrenocortical tumor (ACT). A program was initiated to improve the reproducibility of the pathologic diagnosis of ACTs in France through the National INCa-COMETE Network. Twelve pathologists from all Reference Centers of the Network analyzed 50 selected ACTs using a web-based virtual microscopy approach in a blind design, allowing to determine the intraobserver and interobserver reproducibilities of the Weiss system.

Oxidative stress-responsive microRNA-320 regulates glycolysis in diverse biological systems.

Glycolysis is the initial step of glucose catabolism and is up-regulated in cancer cells (the Warburg Effect). Such shifts toward a glycolytic phenotype have not been explored widely in other biological systems, and the molecular mechanisms underlying the shifts remain unknown. With proteomics, we observed increased glycolysis in disused human diaphragm muscle.

Non-small cell lung cancer: identifying prognostic imaging biomarkers by leveraging public gene expression microarray data--methods and preliminary results.

Purpose: To identify prognostic imaging biomarkers in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) by means of a radiogenomics strategy that integrates gene expression and medical images in patients for whom survival outcomes are not available by leveraging survival data in public gene expression data sets.

Materials And Methods: A radiogenomics strategy for associating image features with clusters of coexpressed genes (metagenes) was defined. First, a radiogenomics correlation map is created for a pairwise association between image features and metagenes.

Prognostic PET 18F-FDG uptake imaging features are associated with major oncogenomic alterations in patients with resected non-small cell lung cancer.

Although 2[18F]fluoro-2-deoxy-d-glucose (FDG) uptake during positron emission tomography (PET) predicts post-surgical outcome in patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), the biologic basis for this observation is not fully understood. Here, we analyzed 25 tumors from patients with NSCLCs to identify tumor PET-FDG uptake features associated with gene expression signatures and survival. Fourteen quantitative PET imaging features describing FDG uptake were correlated with gene expression for single genes and coexpressed gene clusters (metagenes).

Development and evaluation of a single-step duplex PCR for simultaneous detection of Fasciola hepatica and Fasciola gigantica (family Fasciolidae, class Trematoda, phylum Platyhelminthes).

A single-step multiplex PCR (here referred to as a duplex PCR) has been developed for simultaneous detection and diagnosis of Fasciola hepatica and F. gigantica. These species overlap in distribution in many countries of North and East Africa and Central and Southeast Asia and are similar in egg morphology, making identification from fecal samples difficult.

Scoring system for predicting recurrences in patients with papillary thyroid microcarcinoma.

Context: Papillary thyroid microcarcinomas (PMC) defined as tumors ≤10 mm in diameter (including pT1a and pT3 according to the latest pTNM classification) have good prognosis, although recurrence is possible. Clinicians are interested in using a scoring system for predicting recurrences.

Objective: To identify the prognostic factors for recurrence in patients with PMC and to develop a scoring system based on lymph node involvement, multifocality, and sex.

Prior research has described the health of the older population, but little work has explored mental health. Lewis acid promoted intramolecular (3 + 2) 'cycloadditions' of methyleneaziridines with alkene and alkyne acceptors.

2-Methyleneaziridines can be tethered to a variety of alkene or alkyne acceptors through the saturated carbon of the heterocyclic ring by application of a simple lithiation/alkylation sequence (8 examples, 31-59%). Treatment of the resultant alkene bearing substrates with BF(3)·OEt(2) leads to cis-octahydrocyclopenta[c]pyrroles in which up to four contiguous stereocentres are created in a diastereocontrolled manner after reductive work-up. Using an alkyne based substrate, a 2,4,5,6-tetrahydrocyclopenta[c]pyrrole is produced by rapid tautomerisation of the initially formed bisenamine.

Morbidity and mortality after esophagectomy following neoadjuvant chemoradiation.

Background: Neoadjuvant chemoradiation (CRT) is an accepted treatment for locally advanced esophageal carcinoma. A survival benefit has not been definitively established, and there is concern that chemoradiation may increase postoperative morbidity and mortality.

Methods: A retrospective review was made of 138 patients treated for esophageal carcinoma between January 1999 and December 2009.
