In Vietnam, commercial disinfectants containing quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) are commonly used in pig and poultry farms to maintain hygiene during production. We hypothesized that sustained exposure to sub-bactericidal concentrations of QAC-based disinfectants may result in increased levels of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) among Enterobacteriacea due to the increase of efflux pump expression. To test this hypothesis we exposed six antimicrobial-susceptible Escherichia coli (E.

The on-chip growth and surface-functionalization have been recently regarded as promising techniques for large-scale fabrication of high performance nanowires gas sensors. Here we demonstrate a good NO2 gas-sensing performance of the tungsten oxide nanowires (TONWs) sensors realized by scalable on-chip fabrication and RuO2-functionalization. The gas response (Rg/Ra) of the RuO2-functionalized TONWs to 5 ppm of NO2 was 186.

Regular usage of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) is associated with reduced incidence of a variety of cancers. The molecular mechanisms underlying these chemopreventive effects remain poorly understood. This current investigation showed that in gastric cancer cells: (1) Indomethacin treatment enhanced the degradation of chromosomal passenger proteins, Survivin and Aurora B kinase; (2) Indomethacin treatment down-regulated Aurora B kinase activity in a cell cycle-independent fashion; (3) siRNA knockdown of Survivin level promoted Aurora B kinase protein degradation, and vice versa; (4) ectopic overexpression of Survivin blocked reduction of Aurora B kinase level and activity by indomethacin treatment, and vice versa; (5) siRNA knockdown of Aurora B kinase level and AZD1152 inhibition of its activity induced apoptosis, and overexpression of Aurora B kinase inhibited indomethacin-induced apoptosis; (6) indomethacin treatment reduced Aurora B kinase level, coinciding with reduction of Survivin level and induction of apoptosis, in KATO III and HT-29 cells, and in mouse gastric mucosa.

Decoration of noble metal nanoparticles (NPs) on the surface of semiconducting metal oxide nanowires (NWs) to enhance material characteristics, functionalization, and sensing abilities has attracted increasing interests from researchers worldwide. In this study, we introduce an effective method for the decoration of Pd NPs on the surface of SnO2 NWs to enhance CO gas-sensing performance. Single-crystal SnO2 NWs were fabricated by chemical vapor deposition, whereas Pd NPs were decorated on the surface of SnO2 NWs by in situ reduction of the Pd complex at room temperature without using any linker or reduction agent excepting the copolymer P123.

Picornaviruses infecting pigs, described for many years as 'porcine enteroviruses', have recently been recognized as distinct viruses within three distinct genera (Teschovirus, Sapelovirus and Enterovirus). To better characterize the epidemiology and genetic diversity of members of the Enterovirus genus, faecal samples from pigs from four provinces in Vietnam were screened by PCR using conserved enterovirus (EV)-specific primers from the 5' untranslated region (5' UTR). High rates of infection were recorded in pigs on all farms, with detection frequencies of approximately 90% in recently weaned pigs but declining to 40% in those aged over 1 year.
