Background: Neuroprotective effects have been the main focus of new treatment modalities for ischemic stroke. Phenothiazines, or chlorpromazine plus promethazine (C + P), are known to prevent the generation of free radicals and uptake of Ca by plasma membrane; they have a potential as a treatment for acute ischemic stroke (AIS). This study aims to investigate the role of endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress-associated PERK-eIF2α pathway underlying the phenothiazine-induced neuroprotective effects after cerebral ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to identify how common periprosthetic occult femoral fractures are during primary cementless total hip arthroplasty (THA) and what factors contribute to their development.
  • Out of 199 hips examined, 10.6% had undetected fractures, with a significant relationship found between these fractures and female patients, who had a higher risk as compared to males.
  • The findings suggest that female patients with unexplained early thigh pain or intraoperative fractures around the lesser trochanter should be evaluated with a CT scan for potential occult fractures.

As long-lived apex predators, Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins () are key indicators of marine coastal environmental health. Skin marks can be observed on dorsal body surfaces that are visible during mark-recapture studies that rely on photo-identification (photo-ID) methods. Skin mark prevalence may be an indicator of environmental or anthropogenic stressors in the ecosystem, which may lead to individual and/or population-level health concerns.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates whether stress-induced hyperglycemia can predict poor outcomes in patients with acute ischemic stroke who were treated with endovascular treatment, particularly focusing on those with and without diabetes.
  • It analyzed data from 576 patients and found that those with higher levels of stress-induced hyperglycemia had a worse prognosis at 3 months, especially in non-diabetic patients.
  • The conclusion suggests that while premorbid diabetes status affects outcomes, poor prognosis in diabetic patients isn't independently linked to stress-induced hyperglycemia.

Unlabelled: To provide an online service learning opportunity for medical students during the COVID-19 pandemic, medical faculty and librarians developed and implemented a "Debunking Medical Myths" module in which students learned to search for emerging medical literature, evaluate evidence, and use that evidence to create an infographics debunking a COVID-19-related myth for a non-medical audience. The resultant infographics are visually appealing and designed to make complex health information easy to understand. The module was well-received by students, who demonstrated a nuanced understanding of the use of infographics to convey health information, and students' work was evaluated highly by community members.
