The use of haploidentical donor hematopoietic cell transplantation (haploHCT) has expanded, but recent reports raise concern for increased rates of infectious complications. The incidence and risk factors for invasive fungal disease (IFD) after haploHCT have not been well elucidated. This study aimed to evaluate the incidence and risk factors for IFD after haploHCT.

Phenotypic and functional characterization of the CD6-ALCAM T-cell co-stimulatory pathway after allogeneic cell transplantation.

CD6 is a co-stimulatory receptor expressed on T cells that binds activated leukocyte cell adhesion molecule (ALCAM), expressed on antigen presenting cells, epithelial and endothelial tissues. The CD6-ALCAM pathway plays an integral role in modulating T-cell activation, proliferation, and trafficking. In this study we examined expression of CD6 by reconstituting T cells in 95 patients after allogeneic cell transplantation and evaluated the effects of itolizumab, an anti- CD6 monoclonal antibody, on T-cell activation.

Association of Complex Multimorbidity and Long-term Survival After Emergency General Surgery in Older Patients With Medicare.

Importance: Although nearly 1 million older patients are admitted for emergency general surgery (EGS) conditions yearly, long-term survival after these acute diseases is not well characterized. Many older patients with EGS conditions have preexisting complex multimorbidity defined as the co-occurrence of at least 2 of 3 key domains: chronic conditions, functional limitations, and geriatric syndromes. The hypothesis was that specific multimorbidity domain combinations are associated with differential long-term mortality after patient admission with EGS conditions.

Despite recent advances, options for steroid-refractory (SR) cGVHD are limited. In previous trials of low-dose interleukin-2 (LD IL-2), the immunomodulatory properties of regulatory T cells (Tregs) have been harnessed to treat SR-cGVHD safely and effectively.

Predictors for Withdrawal of Life-Sustaining Therapies in Patients With Traumatic Brain Injury: A Retrospective Trauma Quality Improvement Program Database Study.

Many patients with severe traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) undergo withdrawal of life-sustaining therapies (WLSTs) or transition to comfort measures, but noninjury factors that influence this decision have not been well characterized. We hypothesized that WLST would be associated with institutional and geographic noninjury factors. All patients with a head Abbreviated Injury Scale score ≥3 were identified from 2016 Trauma Quality Improvement Program data.

Occupational Exposure to Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons and Lung Cancer Risk: Results from a Pooled Analysis of Case-Control Studies (SYNERGY).

Background: Exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) occurs widely in occupational settings. We investigated the association between occupational exposure to PAH and lung cancer risk and joint effects with smoking within the SYNERGY project.

Methods: We pooled 14 case-control studies with information on lifetime occupational and smoking histories conducted between 1985 and 2010 in Europe and Canada.

Raman Thermometry Nanopipettes in Cancer Photothermal Therapy.

Raman thermometry based on surface-enhanced Raman scattering has been developed using nanopipettes in cancer cell photothermal therapy (PTT). Gold nanorods (AuNRs) are robustly epoxied on glass pipettes with a high surface coverage of ∼95% and less than 10 nm-wide nanogaps for intracellular thermometry and photothermal cancer therapy. The temperature changes could be estimated from the N≡C band shifts of 4-fluorophenyl isocyanide (FPNC)-adsorbed AuNRs on the Raman thermometry nanopipette (RTN) surfaces.

Hepatitis B Virus Vaccination after Allogeneic Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation Prevents Post-Transplantation Hepatitis B Virus Reactivation.

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) reactivation in allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) recipients with evidence of pretransplantation resolved HBV infection is an important cause of morbidity, usually occurring 1 year or later after HCT. We retrospectively studied a cohort of allogeneic HCT recipients with resolved HBV infection, some of whom were vaccinated for HBV following transplantation, to understand whether post-HCT HBV vaccination influenced the risk of HBV reactivation. The study included all patients with resolved HBV who underwent allogeneic HCT at our institution between January 1, 2000, and December 31, 2015, where HBV vaccination starting at 1 year after HCT became standard in 2012 and antiviral prophylaxis is not used.

Impact of diagnostic genetics on remission MRD and transplantation outcomes in older patients with AML.

Older patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) have high relapse risk and poor survival after allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT). Younger patients may receive myeloablative conditioning to mitigate relapse risk associated with high-risk genetics or measurable residual disease (MRD), but older adults typically receive reduced-intensity conditioning (RIC) to limit toxicity. To identify factors that drive HCT outcomes in older patients, we performed targeted mutational analysis (variant allele fraction ≥2%) on diagnostic samples from 295 patients with AML aged ≥60 years who underwent HCT in first complete remission, 91% of whom received RIC, and targeted duplex sequencing at remission in a subset comprising 192 patients.

Cost-effectiveness of computed tomography versus ultrasound-based surveillance following endovascular aortic repair of intact infrarenal abdominal aortic aneurysms.

Background: While Society for Vascular Surgery guidelines recommend computed tomography angiography (CTA) or ultrasound for surveillance following infrarenal endovascular aortic repair (EVAR), there is a lack of consensus regarding optimal timing and modalities. Overall Survival of Patients with Myxofibrosarcomas: An Epidemiological Study.

Myxofibrosarcoma (MFS) is a rare mesenchymal soft tissue sarcoma type, with a high local recurrence (LR) rate. Robust epidemiological data on MFS are lacking. We, therefore, aimed to identify prognostic factors and describe real-life outcomes of a large cohort of 908 MFS patients obtained from the nationwide database of the Netherlands Cancer Registry and diagnosed between 2002 and 2019.

Concordance of Occupational Exposure Assessment between the Canadian Job-Exposure Matrix (CANJEM) and Expert Assessment of Jobs Held by Women.

Objectives: To compare the exposure data generated by using the Canadian job-exposure matrix (CANJEM) with data generated by expert assessment, for jobs held by women.

Methods: We selected 69 occupational agents that had been assessed by experts for each of 3403 jobs held by 998 women in a population-based case-control study of lung cancer. We then assessed the same agents among the same jobs by linking their occupation codes to CANJEM and thereby derived probability of exposure to each of the agents in each job.

Systematic review and meta-analysis of management of incompetent perforators in patients with chronic venous insufficiency.

Objective: Incompetent perforator veins (IPVs) contribute to venous pathology and are surgically treated based on hemodynamic measurements, size, and the CEAP (Clinical, Etiological, Anatomical, and Pathophysiological) classification. The objective of the present study was to systematically review and synthesize the current literature regarding the surgical management of IPVs, including open ligation, subfascial endoscopic perforator surgery (SEPS), endovascular laser ablation, ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy, and radiofrequency ablation.

Methods: English-language literature reported before November 2021 was reviewed from the PubMed, EMBASE, and MEDLINE databases for primary studies reporting safety and efficacy outcomes in the surgical treatment of IPVs.
