Febrile neutropenia (FN) and chemotherapy-induced neutropenia (CIN) are common conditions that lead to dose reduction or delayed chemotherapy in patients with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL). Primary prophylaxis (PP) with long-acting granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) was introduced in South Korea in 2014. We aimed to investigate the effects of PP on FN-related hospitalization and death in patients with DLBCL receiving rituximab, cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine, and prednisone (R-CHOP).

Article Synopsis
  • The study focused on creating and validating predictive models for recurrence in patients with synchronous colorectal cancer liver metastasis (SCLM) after surgery, using an FDG PET-CT metabolic parameter called the metastasis-to-primary-tumor uptake ratio (M/P ratio).
  • Researchers analyzed data from two cohorts: the development cohort (2006-2015) to create the models and the validation cohort (2006-2017) to assess their effectiveness.
  • Both preoperative and postoperative models outperformed an existing clinical risk score (FCRS) in predicting recurrence, and are now available as a web-based calculator for clinical use.

Objective: Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) and extrahepatic bile duct carcinoma (EBDC) are distinct entities with different clinicopathological implications. Therefore, research to differentiate between the two diseases is compulsory. In this study, four biomarkers were selected (Hippocalcin-like 1 (HPCAL1); annexin A10 (ANXA10); MUC5AC; sodium/potassium-transporting ATPase subunit beta-1 (ATP1B1)) and focus was placed on clarifying the diagnostic performance of each biomarker and pioneering novel-combined biomarker panels to discriminate between PDAC and EBDC.

Article Synopsis
  • Advanced breast cancer often spreads to bones, leading to mobility problems and reduced quality of life; standard treatments include bone-modifying agents and chemotherapy.
  • A study analyzed serum samples from breast cancer patients undergoing palliative treatment to identify biomarkers that might indicate better prognosis with zoledronic acid and taxane chemotherapy.
  • Key findings suggest that low levels of TGF-β1 and TNF-α, along with high levels of IFN-γ, are linked to longer progression-free survival (PFS), and a risk score based on these cytokines may help predict patient outcomes.

Context: The goal of palliative care is to maximize the quality of life and thus maintain the dignity of patients facing problems associated with a life-threatening illness. The Patient Dignity Inventory (PDI) is an instrument used to measure various sources of distress that can impact patients' sense of dignity at the end of life.

Objectives: We aimed to obtain a Korean translation of the PDI (PDI-K) and evaluate its psychometric properties in patients with advanced cancer.

Objectives: Crystal-storing histiocytosis (CSH) is an uncommon finding in plasma cell neoplasms. CSH is thought to be an intralysosomal deposition of secreted paraproteins or immunoglobulins, which usually express κ immunoglobulin light chains that finally aggregate in crystals. Because of its rarity, CSH in bone marrow often makes diagnosis difficult.
