Although most of sacral perineural cysts are asymptomatic, some may produce symptoms. Specific radicular pain may be due to distortion, compression, or stretching of nerve root by a space occupying cyst. We report a rare case of S1 radiculopathy caused by sacral perineural cyst accompanying disc herniation.

Primary Intradural Extraosseous Ewing's Sarcoma.

Ewing's sarcoma usually arises from skeletal bone, but rarely may have an extraskeletal origin. However, Ewing's sarcoma that originates around the spinal column, especially, the intradural extramedullary type is extremely rare. We report a rare case of primary intraspinal extraskeletal Ewing's sarcoma.

In vivo microCT quantification of lung tumor growth in SPC-raf transgenic mice.

Lung cancer is the most common cancer worldwide. Early detection might reduce morbidity. In this study we evaluate a microCT imaging algorithm to assess in-vivo tumour load and quantification of tumour growth in a transgenic disease model of lung adenocarcinomas.

Background/aims: To date, an effective salvage chemotherapy regimen for the treatment of refractory or relapsing non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) has not been discovered. This study was conducted to evaluate the efficacy and safety of gemcitabine, etoposide, cisplatin, and dexamethasone in relapsed or refractory NHL patients.

Methods: All patients had histologically proven relapsed or refractory NHL.

Impact of delayed laparoscopic cholecystectomy after percutaneous transhepatic gallbladder drainage for patients with complicated acute cholecystitis.

Laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) for complicated acute cholecystitis is associated with high rates of complications and conversion to open cholecystectomy. Percutaneous transhepatic gallbladder drainage (PTGBD) is a safe and effective treatment for acute inflammation of the gallbladder. This study was a retrospective analysis of patients who underwent an LC with or without PTGBD for complicated acute cholecystitis at our hospital between January 2002 and January 2007.

Efficacy of spinal implant removal after thoracolumbar junction fusion.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of spinal implant removal and to determine the possible mechanisms of pain relief.

Methods: Fourteen patients with an average of 42 years (from 22 to 67 years) were retrospectively evaluated. All patients had posterior spinal instrumentation and fusion, who later developed recurrent back pain or persistent back pain despite a solid fusion mass.

Complete Cord Injury after Minimal Trauma in a Patient with Forestier's Disease Accompanying Ossification of the Posterior Longitudinal Ligament.

Forestier's disease is a systemic rheumatological abnormality in which exuberant ossification occurs along ligaments throughout the body, but most notably the anterior longitudinal ligament of the spine. This disease is usually asymptomatic; however dysphagia, dyspnea, and peripheral nerve entrapment have all been documented in association with the disorder. We report a rare case of catastrophic neurologic damage caused by Forestier's disease accompanying ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament.

Endoscopic discectomy for the cauda equina syndrome during third trimester of pregnancy.

Low back pain is common during pregnancy. However, the prevalence of symtomatic lumbar disc herniation is rare, and cauda equina syndrome due to disc herniation during pregnancy is even rarer. We report a rare case of lumbar disc herniation causing cauda equina syndrome during third trimester of pregnancy which successfully treated by endoscopic discectomy.

Osteosarcoma arising in a long-standing uterine leiomyoma: a case report and literature review.

The authors present the first case of a pure osteosarcoma arising in a long-standing uterine leiomyoma along with a literature review of all heterologous sarcomas arising in uterine leiomyoma. Most cases present with abnormal vaginal bleeding and symptoms related to a rapidly enlarged pelvic mass in postmenopausal women with a long-standing history of uterine leiomyoma. The histological finding of the case in this study revealed a relatively well-circumscribed tumor with a peripheral ring of leiomyoma and a central osteosarcoma.

Oral fluoropyrimidines (capecitabine or S-1) and cisplatin as first line treatment in elderly patients with advanced gastric cancer: a retrospective study.

Background: This study aimed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of oral fluoropyrimidines and cisplatin therapy in elderly patients with untreated advanced gastric cancer (AGC) retrospectively. In addition, we evaluated the relative activity and toxicity of these agents in this patient population.

Methods: Clinical data from 72 patients with previously untreated AGC, who were treated with capecitabine/cisplatin and S-1/cisplatin, were reviewed.

Predictors of Plasmodium vivax malaria-induced nephropathy in young Korean men.

Background: Plasmodium vivax malaria accounts for more than half of all malaria cases in Asia and Latin America. Despite the high prevalence of disease caused by this parasite, research into its effects (especially its renal effect) has lagged disproportionately. To investigate predictors of vivax malaria-induced nephropathy, we analyzed the cases of vivax malaria-induced nephropathy in young Korean men.

Bortezomib and the increased incidence of herpes zoster in patients with multiple myeloma.

Background: Bortezomib has significantly advanced the treatment of patients with multiple myeloma (MM). However, considering that most patients with MM are elderly, bortezomib-related morbidity should be thoroughly studied to ensure the safe use of this drug. Herpes zoster has been reported as a possible adverse event associated with bortezomib because a major target of bortezomib, nuclear factor-kappaB, is known to be involved with T-cell immunity.

Impact of alemtuzumab as conditioning regimen component on transplantation outcomes in case of CMV-seropositive recipients and donors.

We studied the incidence of cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection, clinical outcomes, and complications in 39 recipients of alemtuzumab-containing conditioning-stem cell transplantation, who were classified into two groups based on the median dose (35 mg) of alemtuzumab. All the recipients and donors were CMV-seropositive before transplantation. The median survival duration was 321 days (range, 46-1098 days) and the 2-year survival rate was 47.

Objective: This study was addressed to understand the underlying mechanism of the substrate-dependent effect of genetic variation in SLCO1B1, which encodes OATP1B1 (organic anion transporting polypeptide) transporter, on the disposition of two OATP1B1 substrates, pravastatin and pitavastatin, in relation to their transport activities.

Methods: The uptake of pravastatin, pitavastatin, and fluvastatin was measured in oocytes overexpressing SLCO1B1*1a and SLCO1B1*15 to compare the alterations of in-vitro transporting activity. After 40-mg pravastatin or 4-mg pitavastatin was administered to 11 healthy volunteers with homozygous genotypes of SLCO1B1*1a/*1a and SLCO1B1*15/*15, the pharmacokinetic parameters of pravastatin and pitavastatin were compared among participants with SLCO1B1*1a/*1a and SLCO1B1*15/*15 genotypes.

Identification and functional characterization of genetic variants of human organic cation transporters in a Korean population.

Genetic variants of three human organic cation transporter genes (hOCTs) were extensively explored in a Korean population. The functional changes of hOCT2 variants were evaluated in vitro, and those genetic polymorphisms of hOCTs were compared among different ethnic populations. From direct DNA sequencing, 7 of 13 coding variants were nonsynonymous single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), including four variants from hOCT1 (F160L, P283L, P341L, and M408V) and three from hOCT2 (T199I, T201M, and A270S), whereas 6 were synonymous SNPs.

Insertion of virtual pulmonary nodules in CT data of the chest: development of a software tool.
