Objective: Although physical activity is an evidence-based intervention that reduces disease-related symptoms and comorbidity in rheumatoid arthritis (RA), the effect of physical activity on self-reported function and quality of life (QoL) has not yet been analyzed. The present study synthesizes the evidence for the effectiveness of physical activity on QoL and self-reported function in adults with RA, spondyloarthritis (SpA), and psoriatic arthritis (PsA).

Poor Kids? Economic Resources and Adverse Peer Relations in a Nationally Representative Sample of Swedish Adolescents.

There is limited knowledge on the impact of economic resources on adverse peer relations during adolescence. This study used a nationally representative sample (n = 4725, 51% girls) of Swedish eighth-grade students (approximately age fourteen) to examine associations between economic resources and adverse peer relations in the form of peer rejection and bullying victimization. Adolescents from households in the lowest within-school household income quintile were found to be rejected by school class peers to a greater extent than more advantaged students, but an association was not found between relative household income and bullying victimization.

Application of a colorimetric chain-termination assay for characterization of reverse transcriptase from 3'-azido-2',3'-deoxythymidine-resistant HIV isolates.

Two different enzyme assays, both based on the interaction of native reverse transcriptase (RT) and 3'-azido-2',3'-deoxythymidine triphosphate (AZT-TP), were used to characterize the enzymes from 18 HIV-1 isolates with decreased sensitivity to AZT in cell culture. Modern ventilators are complicated electronic instruments with microprocessors and software, with the possibility of technical errors and problems such as autocycling. Despite autocycling being recognized as a problem in textbooks and reviews, there are few reports about autocycling in the literature. We report a case where a sudden increase in respiratory frequency due to autocycling resulted in a dangerous increase in intrinsic positive end-expiratory pressure (intrinsic PEEP, PEEPi).

Sequence evolution and cross-reactive antibody responses to hypervariable region 1 in acute hepatitis C virus infection.

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection may result in acute resolving or chronic infection. Patients that clear the infection have a more vigorous cellular immune response and an early humoral response to the hypervariable region 1 (HVR1) of the E2 envelope protein. To analyse further the properties of the early anti-HVR1 response, cross-reactivity of anti-HVR1 responses was assessed in five patients with acute HCV infection, who were infected by the same virus strain during a nosocomial outbreak.

Comparative studies on neutralisation of primary HIV-1 isolates by human sera and rabbit anti-V3 peptide sera.

IgG binding to V3 peptides and serum neutralising responses were studied in four HIV-1 infected individuals with progressive disease over a period of 31-70 months. The 18-20 mer peptides comprised residues 299-317 (numbering of HIV1 MN) in the N-terminal half of the V3 loop of the envelope glycoprotein gp120 and were derived from the sequences of autologous, as well as heterologous isolates. All four individuals studied lacked anti-V3 IgG binding to at least one autologous V3 sequence.

Protein-detergent interactions studied by capillary isotachophoresis.

The interactions of sodium dodecyl sulphate with bovine serum albumin and ovalbumin have been studied by capillary isotachophoresis. This method makes it possible to determine very accurately the number of ligands bound to the high-affinity binding sites of the native protein. Bovine serum albumin was found to have seven high-affinity binding sites whereas ovalbumin in its native state was found to lack high-affinity binding sites for dodecyl sulphate.

Anion binding properties of human serum albumin from halide ion quadrupole relaxation.

The nuclear magnetic quadrupole relaxation enhancement of 35Cl-, 81Br-, and 12I- anions on binding to human serum albumin has been studied under conditions of variable protein and anion concentration and also in the presence of simple inorganic, amphiphilic, and complex anions which compete with the halide ions for the protein anion binding sites. Two classes of anion binding sites with greatly different binding constans were identified. Experiments at variable halide ion concentration were employed to determin the Cl- and I- binding constants.
