High concentration of oxaliplatin may be a risk factor for vascular pain.

What Is Known And Objective: Oxaliplatin (L-OHP) is an antineoplastic agent that frequently causes vascular pain. However, the risk factors for vascular pain are unclear, and prevention methods have not been established. We retrospectively investigated patients who were treated with L-OHP to examine the influence of patient characteristics and concomitant analgesic use on the incidence of vascular pain.

[Rubric Assessment for Pharmacotherapy in Spiral Curriculum: Development and Usefulness Evaluation].

A requirement, which students must satisfy, for a diploma at the Showa University School of Pharmacy is the ability to "plan, practice, and assess pharmacotherapy". To continuously assess the ability of students to meet this requirement and to provide patients with proper pharmacotherapy during student clinical rotations, we formulated the "Rubric assessment for pharmacotherapy" and evaluated its usefulness in tutorial learning classes. Clinical pharmacy faculty members created the rubric based on the Subjective, Objective, Assessment, and Plan (SOAP) note guidelines of the university.

Effectiveness of a Smartphone Application as a Support Tool for Patients Undergoing Breast Cancer Chemotherapy: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

Background: Outpatients undergoing cancer chemotherapy experience anxiety related to adverse drug reactions that they can experience at home. We developed a breast cancer patient support system (BPSS) application (app). The BPSS app chronologically and quantitatively records patients' subjective and objective symptoms during breast cancer chemotherapy, with the goal of providing supportive management for adverse drug reactions.

[Is intensive and comprehensive dysphagia rehabilitation effective in preventing hospital-acquired pneumonia in a convalescent rehabilitation ward?].

Aim: To evaluate the effect of intensive and comprehensive dysphagia rehabilitation on the prevention of hospital-acquired pneumonia.

Patients And Methods: In this non-randomized retrospective observational study, we compared two patient groups in a convalescent rehabilitation ward. One included patients after the introduction of an intensive and comprehensive rehabilitative program including various measures, such as nutritional support and respiratory physical therapy (intensive program group); the other included patients who had been admitted before the introduction of the above measures (control group).

Purpose: Oxaliplatin (L-OHP) is known to induce adverse reactions at the injection site, including vascular pain, but the underlying mechanisms have not been clarified. Vascular pain during intravenous L-OHP administration can be inhibited by taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). In this study, we investigated the involvement of the arachidonic acid cascade and prostaglandin (PG) E and 15d-PGJ in vascular pain sensation during intravenous delivery of L-OHP.

Assessment of Injection Site Reactions for Peripheral Intravenous Oxaliplatin Infusion and Potential Remedies.

We investigated the medical and nursing records of 19 patients with unresectable advanced recurrent colorectal cancers treated using oxaliplatin and capecitabine(CapeOX)with or without bevacizumab at the outpatient tumor center of Showa UniversityHospital between November 1, 2009 and November 30, 2011, to clarifydifferences in the incidence of injection site reactions according to the use or non-use of an intravenous infusion solution warming device. Vascular pain and other injection site reactions occurred in 13 patients(68.4%).

[Pharmacists' Behavior in Clinical Practice: Results from a Questionnaire Survey of Pharmacy Students].

A questionnaire survey was performed to obtain pharmacy students' impressions of pharmacists' behavior, to classify these based on professionalism, and to analyze the relationship between these experiences and students' satisfaction with their clinical practice in Japan. The questionnaire was answered by 327 5th-year pharmacy school students upon completing clinical practice at community pharmacies from 2011 to 2012. They rated their satisfaction with their clinical practice using a 6-point Likert scale, and provided descriptions of their experience such as, "This health provider is professional", or "What a great person he/she is as a health provider".

Synthesis of oolongtheanins and their inhibitory activity on micellar cholesterol solubility in vitro.

The synthesis of oolongtheanins (1a-d) was accomplished from EGC and/or EGCg in three steps. Oolongtheanin-3'-O-gallate (1b) showed more potent inhibitory activity on micellar cholesterol solubility than did EGCg.

The proteasome inhibitor bortezomib inhibits the growth of canine malignant melanoma cells in vitro and in vivo.

Canine malignant melanomas are highly aggressive and fatal neoplasms. In the present report, 21 drugs that target specific signalling pathways were screened for their growth inhibitory activity on three canine malignant melanoma cell lines. The proteasome inhibitor bortezomib inhibited the growth of these cell lines.

NDRG4 protein-deficient mice exhibit spatial learning deficits and vulnerabilities to cerebral ischemia.

The N-myc downstream-regulated gene (NDRG) family consists of four related proteins, NDRG1-NDRG4, in mammals. We previously generated NDRG1-deficient mice that were unable to maintain myelin sheaths in peripheral nerves. This condition was consistent with human hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy, Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 4D, caused by a nonsense mutation of NDRG1.

Background: Systolic reserve is an important compensatory mechanism against increasing afterload. Although longitudinal systolic dysfunction with preserved ejection fraction has been reported in hypertensive hearts, radial and circumferential function has not been fully examined. The aim of this study was to investigate three-directional systolic function and its relationships with left ventricular geometry in asymptomatic hypertensive patients using two-dimensional speckle-tracking imaging.

Unlabelled: Despite widespread prophylactic use of implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) therapy, sudden cardiac death and refractory arrhythmia events are still important clinical issues to be overcome. We examined whether the impairment of cardiac sympathetic innervation and myocardial perfusion is responsible for lethal arrhythmic events and has prognostic value by comparing conventional clinical indices.

Methods: In consecutive ICDs implanted in 60 patients, cardiac uptake of (123)I-metaiodobenzylguanidine and (99m)Tc-tetrofosmin at rest was quantified, and then patients were prospectively followed with endpoints of appropriate ICD shocks or cardiac death.

Background: The purpose of this study was to clarify the clinical characteristics and prognostic implications of left atrial (LA) dilation evaluated echocardiographic volume in patients with normal LA dimension (LAD).

Methods: A total of 140 consecutive patients (81 men, mean age: 57 ± 18 years) with normal LAD (<39 mm for women and <41 mm for men) who underwent conventional echocardiography and tissue Doppler imaging were enrolled. LA volume (LAV) ≥29 ml/m(2) was defined as abnormal LAV.

Induction of cell adhesion by galectin-8 and its target molecules in Jurkat T-cells.

We previously showed that tandem-repeat type galectin-8, which has two covalently linked carbohydrate recognition domains (CRDs), induces neutrophil-adhesion through binding to integrin alphaM. Here, we analysed the function of galectin-8 in Jurkat T-cells. Galectin-8, as well as tandem-repeat galectin-9, and several multivalent plant lectins, induced Jurkat T-cell adhesion to a culture plate, whereas single-CRD galectins-1 and -3 did not.

[Long-term suppressive effect of falecalcitriol on parathyroid hormone secretion in secondary hyperparathyroidism in hemodialysis patients].

Alfacarcidol and calcitriol are widely used to treat secondary hyperparathyroidism associated with chronic renal failure, but it is often not possible to administer doses high enough to sufficiently inhibit parathyroid hormones because of the risk of hypercalcemia and hyperphosphatemia. We administered falecalcitriol (Hornel) Tablets) to patients with poorly controlled secondary hyperparathyroidism. The usefulness of falecalcitriol was demonstrated by the fact that control of intact-PTH was maintained for up to 24 months without a clear increase in serum Ca x serum inorganic phosphorus (iP), iP, and ALP levels.
