The aim of this study is to explore reasons for and against prenatal testing and termination for a range of conditions in women from two different ethnic backgrounds. A total of 19 Pakistani and European women in West Yorkshire, UK, who either had a child with a genetic condition or had terminated a pregnancy for one, completed a questionnaire about their attitudes regarding prenatal testing and termination for 30 different fetal conditions and were interviewed about their reasons for their responses. There were more similarities than differences between the Pakistani and European white women.

Carbon dioxide (CO(2)) is a kinetically and thermodynamically stable molecule. It is easily formed by the oxidation of organic molecules, during combustion or respiration, but is difficult to reduce. View Article and Find Full Text PDFThe effects of reaction temperature and pO2 were investigated on a series of (Ba,Ca,Nd)FeO3-delta perovskite systems in order to isolate phases containing ordered arrangements of the distinct vacancy and cation ordering patterns identified in less compositionally complex iron oxide systems. Initial synthesis in air at high temperature yields cubic perovskite phases (I) with average iron oxidation states higher than 3; selected area electron diffraction together with diffuse features observed in the synchrotron X-ray diffraction (SXRD) patterns of these materials show evidence of small domains of short-range cation and vacancy order. Annealing these materials in nitrogen or in a sealed tube in the presence of an NiO/Ni buffer yielded the Fe(3+) phase Ca2Ba2Nd2Fe6O16 (II), closely related to Sr2LaFe3O8 but with partial cation order as well as anion order present the larger Ba cations are largely present in the 12-coordinate site between the octahedral iron layers, and Ca is largely present in 10-coordinate sites between octahedral and tetrahedral sites.

However, small interfering RNA (siRNA) knockdown of the ubiquitous auxilin 2 in HeLa cells only moderately impairs clathrin-dependent trafficking. In this study, we show that HeLa cells also express auxilin 1, previously thought to be neuron specific, and that both auxilins need to be depleted for inhibition of clathrin-mediated endocytosis and intracellular sorting.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFMotivation: We introduce a new method for designating the location of residues in folded protein structures based on the recursive convex hull (RCH) of a point set of atomic coordinates. The RCH can be calculated with an efficient and parameterless algorithm.
Results: We show that residue RCH class contains information complementary to widely studied measures such as solvent accessibility (SA), residue depth (RD) and to the distance of residues from the centroid of the chain, the residues' exposure (Exp).
Circular dichroism (CD) is widely used in the structural characterization and secondary structure determination of proteins. The vacuum UV region (below 190 nm), where charge-transfer transitions have an influence on the CD spectra, can be accessed using synchrotron radiation circular dichroism (SRCD) spectroscopy. Recently, charge-transfer transitions in a conformationally diverse set of dipeptides have been characterized ab initio using complete active space self-consistent field calculations, and the relevant charge distributions have been parametrized for use in the matrix method for calculations of protein CD.

We demonstrate the presence of an oxygen-dependent free radical in the thiamine diphosphate-dependent Escherichia coli 2-oxoglutarate dehydrogenase, which is a key component of the tricarboxylic acid (Krebs) cycle. The radical was sufficiently long-lived to be trapped by freezing in liquid nitrogen, and its electronic structure was investigated by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and electron-nuclear double resonance (ENDOR).

In this paper we present evidence that the steroid environment during pregnancy and at birth aids in protecting the fetus and neonate from asphyxia-induced injury. Here we have examined the role of cargo in the recruitment of Golgi-localized, gamma-ear-containing, ADP ribosylation factor (ARF)-binding proteins (GGAs) onto membranes in HeLa cells. Moderate overexpression of CD8 chimeras with cytoplasmic tails containing DXXLL-sorting signals, which bind to GGAs, increased the localization of all three GGAs to perinuclear membranes, as observed by immunofluorescence.
