Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the effects of homologous recombination deficiency (HRD) on time-to-treatment failure (TTF) in patients with unresectable and recurrent pancreatic cancer (PC) receiving first-line chemotherapy.
  • Among 1,394 patients analyzed, HRD was identified in 7.6% through genetic testing, with commonly affected genes being BRCA2 and ATM.
  • Results showed no significant TTF difference in the gemcitabine plus nab-paclitaxel (GnP) group; however, in the FOLFIRINOX (FFX) group, HRD patients had a significantly longer TTF compared to non-HRD patients, suggesting HRD may influence treatment outcomes in certain chemotherapy regimens

Article Synopsis
  • The study compares two emerging procedures, Balloon Endoscopy-Assisted Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (BE-ERCP) and Endoscopic Ultrasonography-Guided Biliary Drainage (EUS-BD), for treating malignant biliary obstruction (MBO) in patients with altered surgical anatomy.
  • Results show EUS-BD had a significantly higher technical success rate (94%) compared to BE-ERCP (70%), while the clinical success rates and adverse events were similar between the two methods.
  • The findings suggest that EUS-BD is more effective than BE-ERCP, particularly in patients with an intact papilla, where BE-ERCP's technical

Article Synopsis
  • Excess body weight and BMI were examined for their impact on overall survival in patients with advanced biliary tract cancer receiving gemcitabine-based chemotherapy, using data from 360 patients and validated with a larger cohort of 8,324 patients.
  • The study found no significant association between BMI and overall survival rates, with hazard ratios indicating similar survival outcomes across different BMI categories.
  • The conclusion suggests that further research is needed to explore detailed body composition metrics to understand the role of adiposity in the prognosis of biliary tract cancer.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigated whether long-term monitoring of intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms (IPMNs) results in earlier detection and improved outcomes for pancreatic ductal adenocarcinomas (PDACs) that develop alongside IPMNs.
  • Out of 4,620 patients with pancreatic cysts, 63 developed PDAC during surveillance, and their overall survival (OS) was compared to 460 patients with non-IPMN-associated PDACs.
  • Results showed that patients with concomitant PDACs were diagnosed at earlier cancer stages and had a significantly longer OS and higher 5-year survival rates compared to those with non-IPMN-associated PDACs.

Background And Aim: Balloon endoscopy-assisted endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (BE-ERCP) is an emerging procedure for pancreatobiliary diseases in patients with surgically altered anatomy. However, data on BE-ERCP for hepatolithiasis after hepaticojejunostomy (HJS) are still limited.

Methods: Stone removal success, adverse events and recurrence were retrospectively studied in consecutive patients who underwent BE-ERCP for hepatolithiasis after HJS between January 2011 and October 2022.

Article Synopsis
  • A 67-year-old female undergoing chemotherapy for pancreatic cancer developed bacteremia caused by Kluyvera georgiana after surgery.
  • Diagnosis was confirmed using advanced mass spectrometry techniques.
  • Literature suggests that infections by Kluyvera spp. are linked to immunosuppression and may show antibiotic resistance, stressing the need for early diagnosis and treatment.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the effects of the rising number of community pharmacists in Japan from 2008 to 2018 on their distribution relative to population and inhabitable land.
  • Although the total number of community pharmacists increased by about 1.3 times, the distribution showed better equity per population but not per area of land.
  • The findings highlight an imbalance, suggesting that while more pharmacists are available overall, they are not evenly distributed in relation to where people live, indicating a need for improved access to pharmacies in less populated areas.

The consumption of health food products, such as Foods with Function Claims, has grown in Japan. Significant information, such as possible side effects or drug interactions, are expected to be described on the packaging to help consumers to make an informed choice about products. In this study, we checked the items described on the packaging of Foods with Function Claims containing eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and/or docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), Salacinol/Fagomine/Neokotalanol, or Varyl-Tyrosine/Lactotripeptide.
