Reliability of voluntary cough assessments using respiratory flow waveform.

[Purpose] Voluntary cough can be assessed by recording flow waves. The purpose of this study was to examine the reliability of the measurements of respiratory flow waveforms, using equipment that recorded flow waves during cough. [Participants and Methods] Twenty healthy participants were recruited for this study.

Measurement of intercostal muscle thickness with ultrasound imaging during maximal breathing.

[Purpose] Determining the thickness of the intercostal muscle with ultrasound imaging would be a useful parameter in evaluating respiratory muscle activity in patients with tetraplegia and neuromuscular weakness. However, it has not been clarified whether ultrasound imaging can measure changes in intercostal muscle thickness during breathing. This study aimed to measure contractions of the human intercostal muscle in the anterior, lateral, and posterior parts with ultrasound imaging during maximal breathing.

Oxygen cost of thoracic and diaphragmatic breathing during hyperventilation in healthy males.

[Purpose] It is unclear whether diaphragmatic breathing (DB) results in lower respiratory muscle oxygen consumption during dynamic exercise. The purpose of this study was to compare oxygen consumption in the respiratory muscles (VOrm) with thoracic breathing (TB) and with DB, in healthy males during hyperventilation. [Subjects and Methods] Ten healthy men participated in this study.

Functional electrical stimulation to the abdominal wall muscles synchronized with the expiratory flow does not induce muscle fatigue.

[Purpose] Continuous electrical stimulation of abdominal wall muscles is known to induce mild muscle fatigue. However, it is not clear whether this is also true for functional electrical stimulation delivered only during the expiratory phase of breathing. This study aimed to examine whether or not intermittent electrical stimulation delivered to abdominal wall muscles induces muscle fatigue.

A case of liposarcoma with peritonitis due to jejunal perforation.

A 21-year-old man, who had been treated for congenital dilatation of the bile duct 13 years previously, presented with an acute abdomen. The physical examination suggested peritonitis, and an emergent laparotomy was performed. A perforation was foundin the jejunum approximately 100 cm distal to the ligament of Treitz, followed by resection of a 60-cm jejunal segment.

Inflammatory pseudotumor-like follicular dendritic cell tumor of the spleen.

A case of so-called inflammatory pseudotumor (IPT), occurring in the spleen of a 77-year-old woman, is reported. The spleen contained a well-circumscribed mass with central hemorrhage and necrosis. Histologically, spindle cells were dispersed in a background of abundant inflammatory cells, predominantly lymphocytes and plasma cells.

Angiomyofibroblastoma of the vulva: report of a case with immunohistochemical and molecular analysis.

A 43-year-old woman presented with a mass in the subcutaneous tissue of the right labium majus. A lipoma or Bartholin gland cyst was suspected and excision of the lesion was performed. The lesion was well circumscribed, and histological examination revealed a typical angiomyofibroblastoma.
