In recent years, the wild deer population in Japan has grown exponentially, causing severe feeding damage to the agricultural and forestry industries. Therefore, the game meat industry is being promoted for effective utilization of hunted animals. Wild animals are not hygienically controlled and can serve as reservoirs for pathogenic microorganisms.

Article Synopsis
  • CAR T cell therapy has shown success in treating blood cancers but struggles with solid tumors like non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) due to a lack of specific cell surface targets.
  • Researchers identified that CD98 heavy chain protein is overexpressed in NSCLC cells and could serve as a target for CAR T cells.
  • A specific monoclonal antibody called R8H283, which reacts selectively with NSCLC cells without impacting normal tissues, led to the development of CAR T cells that demonstrated significant anti-tumor effects in model studies.

Purpose: Fibroblast activation protein (FAP) is a serine integral membrane protease, the expression of which has been confirmed in various cancer types. Solitary fibrous tumors of the pleura (SFTP) are rare mesenchymal fibroblastic neoplasms. We present a case of F-labeled FAP inhibitor ([F]FAPI-74) PET imaging and its correlation with histological FAP expression and review an SFTP series at our institution in relation to the extent of FAP expression.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focused on karaoke-related COVID-19 outbreaks to identify risk factors for SARS-CoV-2 infection among karaoke participants.
  • It involved a case-control approach, where 81 infected individuals (mostly elderly) were compared with non-infected individuals from the same karaoke bar.
  • Key findings indicated that singing, not wearing a mask, and spending more time in the bar significantly increased infection risks, highlighting that less-ventilated indoor spaces pose a greater threat for virus transmission.

Objectives: Metastasectomy is often the local treatment for pulmonary metastases arising from osteosarcoma or soft tissue sarcoma. However, there have been few investigations on the outcomes of patients who undergo this procedure. In this study, we identified prognostic factors in patients with pulmonary metastases arising from osteosarcoma and soft tissue sarcoma to determine more appropriate eligibility criteria for metastasectomy.

The adhesion between the visceral and parietal pleura makes video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) difficult or impossible. When performing VATS without conversion to thoracotomy due to pleural adhesion, it is important to( ⅰ) evaluate the presence and extent of the adhesion preoperatively, (ⅱ) carefully perform detachment, and( ⅲ) adequately repair the injured visceral pleura. We evaluate visceral sliding with the help of chest ultrasonography and plan the best approach to make utility inci-sions, camera port, and third-port incisions.

Objectives: Spread through air spaces (STAS) is a risk factor for local recurrence after sublobar resection in lung cancer patients. We recently proposed the novel Nakayama-Higashiyama imprint cytological classification (N-H classification) based on small-sized lung adenocarcinoma surgical specimens, which correlated with histological patterns and nodal involvement. This study aimed to evaluate the correlation between STAS and the N-H classification and to validate the N-H classification as an intraoperative predictor of the presence of STAS.

Objectives: Characterizing pathological nodes (pNs) by location alone is sometimes inadequate as patients with pN1 or pN2 non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) show prognostic heterogeneity. We aimed to assess the relationship of the number of metastatic lymph nodes (LNs) and zones with prognosis in NSCLC patients.

Methods: We analysed 1393 patients who underwent lobectomy with mediastinal LN dissection for NSCLC at the Osaka International Cancer Institute between January 2006 and December 2015.

We have studied nematic hybrid films with homeotropic alignment at the top surface and various controlled degrees of in plane ordering, going from a random degenerate organization to a completely uniform alignment along one direction, at the bottom one. We show, by Monte Carlo (MC) computer simulations and experiments on photopatterned films with the bottom support surface fabricated with in-plane order similar to the simulated ones, that the point defects observed in the case of random planar orientations at the bottom tend to arrange along a filament as the surface ordering is sufficiently increased. MC simulations complement the polarized microscopy texture observations allowing to inspect the 3D structure of the defects and examine the role of elastic constants.

The cribriform-morular variant of papillary thyroid carcinoma (CMV-PTC) is a rare morphologic entity in which metastasis rarely occurs. Until now, only three cases of metastasis by CMV-PTC have been reported. We present a rare sporadic case of CMV-PTC with multiple lung metastases in a 28-year-old female, 3 years after total thyroidectomy.

The World Health Organization has warned that substandard and falsified medical products (SFs) can harm patients and fail to treat the diseases for which they were intended, and they affect every region of the world, leading to loss of confidence in medicines, health-care providers, and health systems. Therefore, development of analytical procedures to detect SFs is extremely important. In this study, we investigated the quality of pharmaceutical tablets containing the antihypertensive candesartan cilexetil, collected in China, Indonesia, Japan, and Myanmar, using the Japanese pharmacopeial analytical procedures for quality control, together with principal component analysis (PCA) of Raman spectrum obtained with handheld Raman spectrometer.

Analytical methods for the detection of substandard and falsified medical products (SFs) are important for public health and patient safety. Research to understand how the physical and chemical properties of SFs can be most effectively applied to distinguish the SFs from authentic products has not yet been investigated enough. Here, we investigated the usefulness of two analytical methods, handheld Raman spectroscopy (handheld Raman) and X-ray computed tomography (X-ray CT), for detecting SFs among oral solid antihypertensive pharmaceutical products containing candesartan cilexetil as an active pharmaceutical ingredient (API).

mAbs are currently mainstream in biopharmaceuticals, and their market has been growing due to their high target specificity. Characterization of heterogeneities in mAbs is performed to secure their quality and safety by physicochemical analyses. However, they require time-consuming task, which often strain the resources of drug development in pharmaceuticals.

We consider a scheme of quantum teleportation where a receiver has multiple (N) output ports and obtains the teleported state by merely selecting one of the N ports according to the outcome of the sender's measurement. We demonstrate that such teleportation is possible by showing an explicit protocol where N pairs of maximally entangled qubits are employed. The optimal measurement performed by a sender is the square-root measurement, and a perfect teleportation fidelity is asymptotically achieved for a large N limit.

We show that for all n-mode Gaussian states of continuous variable systems, the entanglement shared among n parties exhibits the fundamental monogamy property. The monogamy inequality is proven by introducing the Gaussian tangle, an entanglement monotone under Gaussian local operations and classical communication, which is defined in terms of the squared negativity in complete analogy with the case of n-qubit systems. Our results elucidate the structure of quantum correlations in many-body harmonic lattice systems.

To clarify the chronologic genetic diversity of coxsackievirus A16 (CV-A16) strains associated with hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) epidemics in a restricted area and their genetic relation with those isolated in other areas, we investigated the genetic diversity of the 129 CV-A16 strains associated with HFMD epidemics in Fukushima, Japan, from 1983 to 2003, and compared their genetic relation to 49 CV-A16 strains isolated in other areas of Japan and in China by using phylogenetic analysis based on the VP4 sequences. Phylogenetic reconstruction of the CV-A16 strains isolated in Fukushima from 1983 to 2003 demonstrated three distinct genetically divergent clusters related to HFMD epidemics that occurred from 1984 to 1994 (including the 1985 and 1991 outbreaks), HFMD epidemics from 1987 to 1998 (including the 1988 and 1998 outbreaks), and HFMD epidemics from 1995 to 2003 (including the 1995 and 2002 outbreaks). CV-A16 strains isolated during each period in Fukushima formed a single cluster with those isolated during essentially the same time period in other areas of Japan and in China.

Background: Enterovirus 71 (EV71) is one of the major etiologic agents of hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD). The surveillance data indicate that EV71 infection follows an epidemic mode of transmission, causing large outbreaks and then becoming quiescent for a few years.

Methods: We investigated the genetic diversity of a total of 121 EV71 strains isolated from patients with HFMD in Fukushima, Japan, from 1983 to 2003 and compared their genetic relation with the 164 EV71 strains isolated in the world using phylogenetic analysis based on the VP4 sequence.

The authors investigated the in vivo anti-tumor effect of intratumoral administration of bone marrow-derived dendritic cells (DCs) after chemotherapy using an oral fluoropyrimidine anti-cancer drug TS-1, and followed by immunotherapeutic agent OK-432, in two syngeneic tumor-bearing mouse models. Both in Meth-A fibrosarcoma-bearing BALB/c mice and in SCCVII-bearing C3H/HeN mice, 1 week of oral administration of TS-1 effected partial eradication of established tumors. Intratumoral injection of DCs and OK-432 caused only slight inhibition of the tumor growth.

Bipartite quantum states are classified into three categories: separable states, bound entangled states, and free entangled states. It is of great importance to characterize these families of states for the development of quantum information science. In this Letter, I show that the separable states and the bound entangled states have a common spectral property.

Low-temperature singlet oxygenation of 1-ethoxy-2, 2-diisopropylethylenes substituted with a benzo(b)furanyl or a benzo(b)thiophenyl group bearing a t-butyldimethylsiloxy at the 5-, 6- or 7-position of the aromatic ring afforded the corresponding 1, 2-dioxetanes in moderate to high yields. On treatment with tetrabutylammonium fluoride in DMSO, dioxetanes with a trigger (siloxy group) at the 5- or 7-position of the aromatic ring decomposed to emit red light (lambda(max) = 615-628 nm), irrespective of the aromatic ring being benzofuran or benzothiophene. For both series of benzofuran-analogues and benzothiophene-analogues, an 'odd/even' relationship between the position of an oxyanion on the aromatic ring relative to the attachment point to the dioxetane and the chemiluminescent properties, lambda(max), Phi(CL), and t(1/2), is observed, as in the case for dioxetanes bearing a phenolic or naphtholic substituent.
