Paraganglioma, a catecholamine-producing tumor originating in extra-adrenal paraganglion cells, is rare in children. Although diagnosis of paraganglioma is based on the presence of catecholamine symptoms, some patients lack such symptoms. Delayed diagnosis is associated with tumor growth and invasion of surrounding vessels.

In this study, we clarified that the cBAF subcomplex is deficient in the SWI/SNF complex, resulting in dependency on the CBP/p300 paralog pair. Simultaneous inhibitors of the CBP/p300 paralog pair show promise for cBAF-deficient lung cancer, as well as rare cancers such as malignant rhabdoid tumors, epithelioid sarcomas, and synovial sarcomas.

Oncolytic virotherapy shows promise as a cancer treatment approach; however, its systemic application is hindered by antibody neutralization. This issue can be overcome by using mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) as carrier cells for oncolytic viruses (OVs). However, it remains elusive whether MSC source influences the antitumor effect.

Background/aim: Although the frequency of small bowel obstructions after liver surgery is generally considered low, previous studies have followed-up patients for less than a year, thus the incidence of small bowel obstructions several years after surgery is unknown. Furthermore, the rise in laparoscopic surgeries and the use of adhesion prevention materials may influence the occurrence of small bowel obstructions. This  study aimed to assess the incidence of small bowel obstructions within a five-year period following liver surgery and identify the associated risk factors.

Neutrophils play an important role in innate immunity and produce reactive oxygen species, but they can also cause inflammation and oxidative stress that can damage their own tissues. We have developed neutrophil activity evaluation systems that simultaneously monitors superoxide radicals and hypochlorite ions secreted by stimulated neutrophils in a few microliters of whole blood and have conducted clinical studies in humans. Here, we report normal reference intervals with our systems based on the results of 3,082 persons who underwent comprehensive cancer screening between February 2020 and March 2022.

Extrahepatic portal vein obstruction (EHPVO) is a rare disease with myeloproliferative neoplasm (MPN) as the most common cause. We report that hypersplenic hematologic changes in EHPVO might be eliminated by MPN. Through experience with splenectomy for variceal control with EHPVO, we suspected that spleen might mask MPN-induced thrombocytosis, and that MPN might have a significant influence on excessive thrombocytosis after splenectomy.

Article Synopsis
  • There is a significant challenge in diagnosing ovarian high-grade endometrioid carcinoma (HGEC) and high-grade serous carcinoma (HGSC) due to their similar histopathological features, leading to variability among observers.
  • A study analyzed a variety of ovarian cancer samples using advanced sequencing and clustering techniques, identifying four distinct tumor groups with different characteristics and survival outcomes.
  • The findings suggest that a specific subset of tumors, termed "HGEC-type," shows favorable prognosis and endometrial differentiation, which may often be misclassified as HGSCs, indicating a need for improved diagnostic strategies.
