Skeletal muscle generates heat via contraction-dependent (shivering) and independent (nonshivering) mechanisms. While this thermogenic capacity of skeletal muscle undoubtedly contributes to the body temperature homeostasis of animals and impacts various cellular functions, the intracellular temperature and its dynamics in skeletal muscle in vivo remain elusive. We aimed to determine the intracellular temperature and its changes within skeletal muscle in vivo during contraction and following relaxation.

Article Synopsis
  • A case study presents a 50-year-old woman with cerebellar infarction and a growing aneurysm at the posterior inferior cerebellar artery (PICA), initially thought to be the cause of her condition.
  • Medical imaging indicated a connection between the aneurysm and the infarction, prompting neurosurgeons to perform surgery to prevent further complications.
  • Post-surgery, it was found that the true cause of the infarction was arterial dissection and not the aneurysm; this highlights the need for differential diagnosis when dealing with similar cases.

Objective: While cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) shunt surgery plays an essential role in the treatment of hydrocephalus, postoperative infection due to the implantation of foreign materials is still one of the most common and potentially serious complications of this procedure. Because no previously reported protocol has been proven to prevent postoperative infection after CSF shunt surgeries in adults, the authors investigated the effectiveness of a protocol introduced in their institution.

Methods: A detailed standardized surgical protocol to prevent infection in patients undergoing CSF shunt surgeries was introduced in the authors' institution in December 2011.

To monitor and characterize oseltamivir-resistant (OR) pandemic (H1N1) 2009 virus with the H275Y mutation, we analyzed 4,307 clinical specimens from Japan by neuraminidase (NA) sequencing or inhibition assay; 61 OR pandemic (H1N1) 2009 viruses were detected. NA inhibition assay and M2 sequencing indicated that OR pandemic (H1N1) 2009 virus was resistant to M2 inhibitors, but sensitive to zanamivir. Full-genome sequencing showed OR and oseltamivir-sensitive (OS) viruses had high sequence similarity, indicating that domestic OR virus was derived from OS pandemic (H1N1) 2009 virus.

Novel syntheses of the 1beta-alkylcarbapenems were achieved on the basis of Eschenmoser sulfide contraction via the new bicyclic 1,3-thiazinone intermediates. 1,3-Thiazinones 7, 16, and 25 were effectively prepared from thioesters 5 and 22 using a C4-S bond formation process. The sulfide contraction reactions were performed by treatment of 7, 16, and 25 with base (NaH or KO-t-Bu) in the presence of triphenylphosphine to generate the corresponding carbapenem enolate 12, 17, and 26, which were trapped by (PhO)(2)POCl followed by the reaction with mercaptans to afford carbapenems 10a, 10b, 19, and 28, respectively.
